English Premier League

Guildford Flames 4 Peterborough Phantoms 7

admission comp (normally 11-50), programme downloadable via internet, attendance 1433
5th v 1st
Flames had two terrible losses last weekend, so a lower crowd than usual feared the worst against the leaders. Sure enough, Phantoms dominated the first period with some excellent hockey all round the ice and took a two goal lead, the second after a Guildford mistake. But Flames scored with 40 seconds to go in the period to give themselves some hope. Phantoms started the second period in control again and scored a third, a pass from one end to another, straight down the middle, well finished. Flames then started to fight back, playing more physical hockey than usual, and crowding visiting netminder Auzins whenever possible to see if he reacted. He did. Piatek missed a one-on-one which would have made it 2-3 before the visitors made it 1-4. The improved Flames pulled another goal back and then we had a bundle at the visiting net; Auzins got 2 mins for slashing, but Duggan got 10 mins for incitement. A fifth for the visitors on 45 mins made the game safe, and they took their foot off the pedal a bit. Flames pulled back twice to be only two behind but Phantoms again pulled away with ease. Their last goal was an empty-netter. We had another bundle around the Phantoms net right at the end too.
Flames will be encouraged by a bit of a comeback but are making quite a few unforced errors. The fans weren't too happy. Phantoms look a good side, top three, possibly champions on this showing. They are a totally different proposition from when I saw them lose 0-6 at Basingstoke a couple of years ago.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.
