English National League Division 2 South

Solent Devils 5 Guildford Phoenix 2

Admission 9-00 inc programme attendance est over 300
2nd v 5th
Since my last visit Devils have won 11 straight and are in a three-way battle for the title with Oxford City Stars and Bracknell Hornets. Today's opponents were expected to be a bit of a test, the visitors havina good run too. They dressed in Flames kit, with over half of their squad having previously played for Solent as talented youngsters, Hemmings and Lane providing the higher-league experience.
And close it was in the first period; the visitors were quite physical and managed to frustrate the home team after Devils had taken an early lead. The scorer was M.Murray, playing his first game for 18 months after being banned for reacting to disgraceful provocation by throwing bottles in the penalty box at the perpetrator (see Streatham report). Murray went on to score a hat-trick today to celebrate his freedom. Phoenix had their moments too, especially towards the end of the period.
In the second Devils then proceeded to kill the game with three goals in five and a half minutes. Visiting netminder Calder, who will want the first two back, was then replaced (but not in time to prevent a two minute Delay of Game penalty) and the Phoenix then battled to prevent further damage. By the end of the period they had recovered, and put real pressure on the home team for the first time, and reduced the deficit as the home team became a little sloppy.
At the start of the third Devils were shorthanded for the first seven mins for miscellaneous penalties, and were even 3 v 5 for two of them. But Phoenix couldn't take advantage. We then had the physical duel from the first period again until there were two goals in a few seconds, one for each side. Near the end Devils got another couple, one just as the buzzer went, to make the scoreline more conclusive. Also right at the end Devils captain A.Cole reacted to a bad hit by ex-Devil Abbott and won the fight quite easily.
Another good crowd with a lot of children. Madness' 'One Step Beyond' is now played after every goal which gives them a lot of fun.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.
