Newport County AFC return to Gloucestershire to mark 30th anniversary of Moreton groundshare
Newport County AFC will return to Moreton-in-Marsh for a friendly to mark the 30th anniversary of their unlikely groundshare in the Cotswolds.
The match will take place on Friday, July 12 (7pm), on the same pitch the Exiles called home for the 1989/90 campaign.
The Welsh club was reformed in June 1989 as Newport AFC by 400 supporters with now club president David Hando as chairman following Newport County's demise in February of that year.
With John Relish at the helm as manager, they spent their Hellenic League Premier Division title-winning season at Moreton Town's London Road ground in north Gloucestershire, around 80 miles from home.
They played their first competitive match at Moreton on August 19, 1989, with Norman Parselle scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Pegasus Juniors, watched by 594 fans.
They later returned to Gloucestershire for the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons, sharing Gloucester City's Meadow Park.
Their first landlords in the county, Moreton Town, were also in the Hellenic Premier and at one stage had Liverpool great Mark Lawrenson playing for them.
They folded in 1994/95 and the team based at London Road is now Moreton Rangers, who won promotion to Hellenic League Division One West last term.
