First time I ever spotted the old Brook Motors ground was during a 5 mile road race in 1994. I couldn't stop and look because I was winning the race at the time....

At the time? So by the end did you think you might as well have stopped, or did you win?

I wouldn't swear to it for 86 but around that time they did play at Don Valley Stadium. They also had a spell at Owlerton Stadium which was essentially a speedway track but I'm not sure of the actual date.

I knew they played at both as remember us beating them at Owlerton but just do know where there played in the 80's

Sheffield FC moved into the Sheffield Amateur Sports Club ground at Abbeydale Park in September 1921 (along with Sheffield Rugby Union FC, Sheffield Hockey Club, and Collegiate Cricket Club) and left in the summer of 1988, because the League had complained about the distance between changing rooms and pitch. I believe the subsequent seasons were played at the following venues...

88/89 to 90/91 - Hillsborough Park (3)
91/92 to 93/94 - Don Valley Stadium (3)
94/95 to 96/97 - Owlerton Stadium (3)
97/98 to 00/01 - Don Valley Stadium (4)
01/02 onwards - Coach & Horses

Certainly in 89/90 they were largely nomadic. I saw them at Hillsborough Arena and at Middlewood Road, a certain teams training ground.

Yes, 'interesting' times for Club during the late '80s / early '90s...

1988 - forced to leave Abbeydale Park because of the League's demands!
88/89 - NCEL Division One champions, & promoted!
89/90 - demoted from the Premier Division after League officials decide Hillsborough Park arena is not up to premier division standards!
90/91 - NCEL Division One champions, & promoted, after the City Council offered them the use of Don Valley Stadium "until their new home at Woodbourn Road athletics stadium is ready later in the year"!

Did Club ever play any games at Woodbourn Road???

I certainly didn't see any. I don't recall them playing there but I could be corrected on that.

Don't think we did Ian. At that time Eagles ressies had got dibs on the Saturday afternoon slot, and we ended up having to resort to playing everywhere else - even played home games at Ossett Town IIRC.

Eastwood Hanley played at the bottom of Trentmill Road, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, between the River Trent and the railway - think the pitch is still in use although the stand(s?) are pretty much gone due to vandalism.

Speaking of Brook(s) Motors, there was an unrelated team in the Huddersfield & District, in fact they're still in there playing on some PF's in Honley! Their old ground is still there complete with a derelict stand in the village of Brockholes, now disused looking at the pitch!

Saw a programme a while back that featured Bradford Park Avenue, the actual PA ground that is. Pitch looked to be used. After searching, I've not come across a team that plays there, anyone know any different? More than likely a Sunday League team I would have thought. Wouldn't mind seeing a game there if possible before it all "modernised". The programme in question was about doing it up as a cricket ground so football pitch might disappear.

Also, I was at Temple Newsome in Leeds the other week and the ground that Leeds Ashley Road used in the Yorkshire League days is still there, complete with a very poorly looking running track around it, not sure if that is still used, one for Loiner I think to comment on.

Thats a blast from past Ian , think they were either champions or won Yorkshire League when I visited May 10, 1981 v Guiseley 1-1,
Good day that was Sunday (Cup Final on Sat) , they kicked off at 11-00 with Selby Town at 15-00 and Bradley Rangers at 18-45.Don't you just love reminiscing , can do it nowadays with no 'ThingyDog' posting any more.
Sure Loiner and Derek and many more were there.
Temple Newsome was horrible but didn't Leeds Ashley Rd have delusions of grandeur and only lasted another couple of seasons at that level ?

There isn't enough room for a full-sized pitch any more. A fitness centre was built over half the old pitch a good few years ago. The old kop is still there, now very overgrown, and you can still see where some of the turnstile entrances were.

Yes, the arena pitch can still be done for Saturday football. Leodis FC of the Selby & District League play there. The pitch next door (to the west) still has white post and rail barriers down the side but are slowly being consumed by the vegetation! Not sure if Colton Athletic of the Yorkshire Amateur League use this particular pitch or not.

I visited the Abbeydale Park ground in 1985 and saw Sheffield playing there in season 1985/86. But my records also show Wombwell playing in the Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Wombwell; is that the same ground in Station Road?

Yes it is the same ground in Wombwell. The name was transferred to the new stadium in Cudworth in the 1990's where AFC Barnsley played.

Does anyone know if any adult football is still played at Station Road, Wombwell (now known as Wombwell Recreation Ground)? It's one of the few former YL/NCEL venues I haven't seen a game at... and I'm not aware of any team using it at the moment. Unsure

By the way, the old football ground at Abbeydale Park used by Sheffield Club was sold off for housing and is now under the cul-de-sac called Ashfurlong Park. Pirate

I was not watching much football in 1981 so was not in attendance, though I am sure Derek would have been.
I watched Leeds Ashley Road a few times in the mid 70,s at the Arena as it was known.

Thanks for all replies, pity about Park Avenue, never got there, not old enough!

I started hopping in earnest a couple of years after 1981 and I missed a few of the old Yorkshire League grounds, including Sheffield Waterworks up at Crookes, now a fitness club.

Going even further back, did anyone on here do Heeley at all?

When Keighley Town dropped out of the old Yorkshire League in 1947 a local poultry farmer bought many of their 'assets'. I've had no luck tracking down who it was. There was an old stand which might have been part of that purchase - still hoping that one day bits of it will turn up somewhere (even if only the painted 'Keighley Town AFC' boar)d. Not going to ask if anyone did that ground...

I didn't start this non-league hopping lark until 1992, hence I missed 2 of Club's former grounds... Abbeydale Park and Hillsborough Park Arena. Unsure

By the way, whereabouts did Heeley Amateurs play their home games?

I watched one game on the original ground. It was around 1986/87, which would have made me 13/14 at the time. One of the teams in the Bradford Sunday Alliance used it as their home ground. I can just about remember walking around the crumbling weed covered terraces, which were the only real signs that the ground had been something in the past. I can also remember being impressed with the large, flat pitch, which was a big step up from what you normally see on a Sunday morning!

Hi Nick

Totally unscientific I'm afraid, but as naughty children we used to phone "Enquiries" from telephone boxes believing that there were a load of geniuses at the other end of the phone who knew everything and not just people who could look up a phone number for you.

On one occasion one of my "hard" mates was going to call and make a rude comment before we all legged it but his bottle went when the phone was answered and he actually asked if they knew where Heeley Amateurs played instead. I remember him being told that they played at Graves Park; following a discussion with other operators at the exchange. Absolutely no proof this was correct though.

When my pocket money wouldn't allow me to watch the Blades or Millers I shared my non league viewing between Norton Woodseats and Hampton Sports and as a non supporter at teams like Frecheville, Hallam, Arthur Lees and Treeton. Each of these had their own ground so unless there was a private area at Graves it seems it was the revenge of the harassed operators in sending us to the wrong destination.
This is one question which I am actively trying to get an answer to myself so will feed any further info to you.

Hi Ian

I've just done a Google Street View and there is still evidence of both grounds (or was when the photos were taken). Further research suggests both are still in use, albeit far more open than in my youth and, in the case of Arthur Lee, the clubhouse has defintely gone. They played in Medlock Close, Handsworth, which seemingly is now used by Everest of the County Senior with a variance of the name, now being Holme Lea ( a not e) and seems to simply be an extension of Handsworth Rec. with all the fencing and shrubbery removed.

Hampton played in Waverley Lane (which now seems to have been taken over by Quarry Road). As you come along the Parkway from M1 just before the slip road to Handsworth / Darnall there is a terrace of stone built houses and it is alongside those.

Again all the trees surrounding it have all been removed although the shell of the clubhouse still appears to be there, but the covered verandah to view from has gone.

Incredibly Street View shows a sign for Middlewood Rovers at the ground with a reference to it being in Waverley Lane

Eyup Phil, funnily enough I was down at Waverley Lane last Saturday but the game was postponed! The clubhouse may be visible on Google Maps but was burnt down in April 2014, the following link should show a photo of the remains...

https://mobile.twitter.com/...s/452732710302519296

...and it still is called Waverley Lane, not Quarry Road, Google Maps is incorrect! Wink I wasn't aware it was the former ground of Hampton's Sports, as it was used by Record Sports / Bahco Record Sports / Record Ridgway Sports / Record Marples Sports (Hatchard / County Senior) in the eighties so presumed it was the former sports ground of Record Tools Ltd. Blush

By the way, who / what were Hampton's ?

A-ha! To answer my own question C & J Hampton Ltd founded the Record Tool Company Ltd so I was right after all! Angelic

The football team's last season seems to have been 86/87 so Middlewood Rovers JFC must have acquired the ground shortly after.

81/82 - Record Sports FC ... Hatchard Lge Div 2,
82/83 - BAHCO Record Sports FC ... Hatchard Lge Div 2,
83/84 - County Senior Lge Div 3,
84/85 - County Senior Lge Div 3,
85/86 - Record Ridgway Sports FC ... County Senior Lge Div 2,
86/87 - Record Marples Sports FC ... County Senior Lge Div 2.
