Re: [nico] Old NCEL Grounds & Others [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

TBH Nick I had no real idea of their title although assumed they were named after a local company. Moore and Wrights (who made precision micrometres) was just over the road, where the Asda Superstore is now and I felt there may be a link there, so only half a million miles away from being right, rather than the full seven digits.

Pleased you found this out as with my current base darn sarf Hampton is a totally different thing (or should I say thingy?).

Interesting about Google; if I paid a subscription to them I'd ask for it back. On Street View it is Quarry Road listed on the panorama all the way around from Hall Road as it is their maps. Obviously it must be a bit of an older view around Waverley (where I am a recently demolished horse chestnut tree is not showing so it is very recent here).

It makes it a bit sadder to see the photo link to the burned out clubhouse. Ironically when I used to go they had one of those free-standing coal burners, like they used to tunnel under in PoW movies, in the middle of the tea bar floor with the flue going up through the roof. I used to take my 2 year old sister with me and remember very well the ladies selling the teas warming her up in front of it before they would let me take her home, with a lung full of coal fumes and no doubt adults with blistered hands from touching the unprotected flue!!!

I have a photo somewhere of the clubhouse/tea bar, sadly in pre-digital days so stored away without easy access and also one of the Orgreave Colliery ground on a jaunt oop north; when I thought that the airport development would cover the whole area(it did Orgreave but not Waverley). I know you aren't a chaser but the only bit of paper I have for them was from an away match at Scarborough before the days of club histories in programmes.

BTW (totally unrelated) I am still dining out on your tale of getting in to a youth game as a relation of one of the (Bristol City?) players. Everyone anticipates the punchline but still howl with laughter when I confirm it.

Brook Motors and Brook Sports are entirely different clubs.

Brook Sports were based in Batley. They played in the West Riding County Amateur League for a couple of seasond after dropping out of the NCE.

Brook Motors are a Huddersfield club who also played for a few seasons in the West Riding County Amateur league.

Brooks Sports played at Thorncliffe Road, Batley. I saw them there v Wombwell in Yorkshire League Div. 3 on 27/12/75 (2-1).

As regards Sheffield FC at Hillsborough Park I saw them there against Maltby MW in NCE 1 on 17/9/88 (3-1).

I'd love to but had better await the OK from Nico. Not that it is totally contentious (just a bit Wink). Also helps if you know Nico and is much better delivered verbally.

He he he, happy days! Yes it was Bristol City (at Crystal Palace FC's fortress-like training ground) but since all aspects of modern life are now blighted by the PC brigade I'm sure there will be some sensitive types on here that will be offended, so best not put it on t'internet! Wink

No problem mate; I am very PC and found it hilarious but know what you mean.

So sorry to Bomaya, although you asked very nicely I'll have to leave you guessing. Next time I'm at Merstham (subject to the new date Kingstonian Vets v Middlesex Wanderers maybe) I will maybe look you up and tell you. Obviously I would then have to kill you Laugh

I'm curious to know, particularly of those grounds in Sheffield and Hillsborough Park where Sheffield FC played, were any of the grounds developed at all? I.e. did they have hard standing, stands, railed/roped etc?

The Sheffield Water Works / Yorkshire Water ground in Crookes was just a pitch with a stone wall perimeter following the pavement.
It probably had changing facilities up the hill but we just used to play "scratch" games on there (circa 90-92) and we only lived a hundred yards away or so and had keys for gate - why? as I explained to the angry grounds keeper when challenged we all worked for Yorkshire Water and paid our Sports and Social subs.
Decent pitch as I remember.

Hillsborough Park Arena looks pretty basic (from Google maps) but Abbeydale Park had a rickety old wooden stand and was railed off. There is a photo of the ground in the 1989 NL Directory.

Hillsborough Park, Middlewood Road, were just pitches, think they got round ground grading by saying they were there only temporary, which indeed they were.

Abbeydale Park never had any seats, just a wooden "pavilion" with a bit of cover but you had to get in there early if it was wet. Great setting in autumn with the surrounding trees in all colours. They used to do a programme of sorts in seventies, a single sheet that looked like it had been printed on Izal bog roll!

Does anyone know who used to play in Overton between Wakefield and Huddersfield? The ground is shared with Denby Grange CC but there is/was a football pitch, railed on 2 or 3 sides and a small stand on the half way line

Denby Grange Athletic when I saw it in 2005. Other WYL Wakefield clubs may have played there also. The ground was probably connected with Denby Grange Collieries.

I remember Middlestown playing there in 1980's. Then Wakefield fc had a season in the 1990's. Both teams playing in the west Yorkshire league.

Went through Royston not long back on way to Upton and came across a ground with some cover and fully enclosed. Not actually in Royston but I can't remember whether it was this side of it or the other. At a guess it was Ryhill & Havercroft, can anyone confirm?

Ian, don't think its Ryhill and Havercroft, they play in Ryhill and you can't see the ground from the main road. You have to go through an estate to get to it, and I don't think there is any cover.

Definitely not Ryhill - just a railed off pitch next to cricket - how about Spark Lane, Mapplewell? In between the B6428 and the site of the old North Gawber Colliery.

Hi Phil, re: http://www.fchd.info/HEELEYAM.HTM

...asked the following question on the Sheffield Forum...

Does anyone know where Heeley Amateurs FC played their home matches? They were members of the Yorkshire League in the Sixties & Seventies but that's all I really know about them. Did they have their own ground, or just rent someone else's?

...and got this reply...

I played with Heeley Amateurs 1976/7ish, used to run from Tramways on London Road and played home games at Dinnington Miners Welfare, 3 men and a dog was our usual gate. I think the second team played at Killamarsh Miners Welfare.

...so it seems they didn't have a ground of their own after all?

Is this the ground you saw?...

http://media.rightmove.co.uk/...mapp_IMG_04_0000.jpg

...don't know if NGC FC's adult Saturday side ever played there, but if they did they probably left due to vandalism. I had a butcher's 3 years ago and the base of the stand was absolutely covered by broken glass/bottles etc. Unsure

I often go on that forum and even did an Heeley search. Never thought of posing the question myself, doh!!!

The moral is never trust a telephone operator and adds fuel to the fire of my rational dislike of the 118 ads.

Maybe clutching at straws but my childhood dealings were around 10 years earlier so did they move. Certainly is a distance from the Tram to Din'ton.
Thanks to Chapeltom's enquiry I can switch to bragging mode as I was a bit of an athlete in those day; many may say I still am!! And used to compete in the Regionals at Hillsborough Park, sadly failing to progress to the Nationals, although beating a future world champion (got it in) one year.

At that stage the building still there had a tea bar in the middle and changing rooms either side, although once changed you had to take your clothes outside and leave them with a responsible person as they were so small.

In front and either side of the building were around 6 steps of terracing and to the roght as you looked foldable metal and wood chairs, which I think had a back wall to give them a sort of segregation feel.

Other than my own athletics events I only ever went once as a soectator when a made played in goal for Darnall Baptists in the Bible Class League Cup Final. A group of us went to support him and sat in the seats

Don't think so, Ian, NGC's youth teams have played there in the past but not this season it seems? Nobody else showing on 'find a club' as playing there neither.

Phil, did you ever get to see any games at the old Ball Inn Ground on Myrtle Road? Never got there myself, but I understand it was floodlit! Shocked

Re: [nico] Old NCEL Grounds & Others [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

To my shame I only did one match there, a Saturday morning Northern Intermediate League game, although I went past many times afterwards. It was on a plateau next to the pub and you entered via a steep driveway to the left of the pub as you looked from the street.

Paid a nominal sum to get in but no paper. The only player I can remember was Ian Holmes who had greater success at York in later years. Had a fence and advertising hoardings along the Myrtle Road side. Can't remember if there was any cover but definitely no seats.

You are correct that there were floodlights but for various reasons I missed out on midweek games, which always seemed to fall victim to the weather whenever I made efforts to go.

It was on the left hand side coming from Norfolk Park, before the bend in the road. Looking on Google Earth there seems to be a side road with a large area of grass running along Myrtle Road which I assume was the location. No sign of the pub though.

Did a few N.I. games at Ball Inn in my youth, can't remember if it had floodlights though.

Remember running around Hillsborough Park track myself but never saw a footie game there until it was modernised. Seen a few Hillsborough Hawks games in the summer, great venue when bar is open.
