NIHL Division 2 South
SLOUGH JETS vs Chelmsford Chieftains
@ Montem Lane. Adm. Con £6 No Prog

First visit since the refurbishment, I was advised a complete demolition and rebuild, however two of the Ground floor walls looked old, so whilst everything else was new, the roof, the extended seating, the new Ice Pad I feel is almost exactly in the same place, but nevertheless a big improvement. Estimated the crowd to be in excess of 400 including a large contingent from Chelmsford.

It was a tight Game with just 4 minor Penalties, two of which after just 0.39 for Interference and Roughing which saw Chelmsford take the lead 3 times, each time Slough equalising, with the final one with 20 seconds remaining in the 3rd Period to tie up at 3-3. Into 3 on 3 Over Time and a deserved winner for Slough’s Talbot who overall looked the best player on the ice.

These two sides plus Solent and possibly Oxford will have an interesting time deciding who wants to be promoted !

National Ice Hockey League South Division 1
Milton Keynes Thunder 5 (London / Romford) Raiders 8
Admission £5 (concession) Attendance c250 (h/c)

This was an enjoyable evening's entertainment. MK went into the match in seventh place in this eight team division with the Raiders placed fifth although MK and basement boys Invicta Dynamos are well adrift at the bottom with only three wins and one win respectively this season. Three of those four wins have have been when playing each other, the other being when MK beat Basingstoke 4-3 in early December. Both teams have had financial problems this season and are playing short benched and indeed at one stage it looked like MK wouldn't see out the season although it seems that they have found some extra sponsorship to allow them to keep going.

MK have had some decent results at home recently with just single goal defeats to Bracknell and Swindon so it wasn't that much of a surprise when they took an early 2-0 lead against the Raiders and held on to this lead until the end of the period. The second period was a much more even affair with the Raiders three times pulling a goal back, but allowing MK to score twice in between to leave the match nicely balanced at 4-3 after 40 minutes. In the final period however MK began to flag and, with the Raiders able to field three lines against MK's two, it was one way traffic with the Raiders scoring five unanswered goals and taking an 8-4 lead. There was still time for MK to score a consolation fifth from a goalmouth melee with 30 seconds to go and this also gave Raiders Callum Wells the opportunity to take some retribution on MK's Harry Ferguson when a rain of punches brought the MK player to the ground before the officials could separate them. This earned Wells a match penalty but general applause from his teammates who had been annoyed with Ferguson's antics throughout. Ferguson was guesting for the night from MK's Elite League team the Lightning and perhaps wasn't aware of the impact his agitating might have on the team with the most penalty minutes in the division.

NIHL Div 1 South
MILTON KEYNES THUNDER 4 Streatham Redhawks 1
Adm. Con. £6 Prog £1

Streatham are on a bad run not helped by their small squad, as opposed to their big money opponents. MKL are in the same boat, only surviving due to crowd funding to complete the Season so perhaps a more even event with the Visitors the slight favourites.

The 1st Period saw Streatham outshoot MKL 18 to 8 but a misplaced pass intercepted on the blue line leading to a one on one and Lightening to open the scoring. Streatham did equalise but the lead was retaken with a good Goal early in the 2nd before adding a 3rd, again following a defensive error another one on one, although once again Streatham outshot 21 to 11. The 3rd saw Streatham again on the offensive and looking confident of getting something out of the Game until 53.50 when Lightening added a 4th.
This confirmed the result but for some reason on 57.45 one of the MKL Imports Trevor Leblanc decided to throw his weight about to which Rupe Quiney decided to intervene with a cross check, Penalty called but LeBlanc quickly scurried back to the Bench followed by Quiney for some verbals. LeBlanc then appeared to throw a punch from behind the bench at which point the Streatham Players on the Ice, plus the Hosts bench become involved. Result Rupe 2 mins for the check also two others both 2 mins for Roughing, plus one MKL also getting 2mins for Roughing, with LeBlanc getting a Match Penalty, just as well for him as he misses their next Game, at Streatham next Saturday, perhaps proving more French than Canadian !
Streatham again outshot 25-9 in the Period whilst Jordan Lawday in the Home Goal did have an excellent Game throughout, however with most of the Play should have got something from the Game, not many Sides outshooting 62-28 in the Match would fail to emerge Winners. Still as ever there’s always tomorrow !

You know when your getting old, I was about to Post in Other Sports !

A free evening as the intention was the Vase at Biggleswade, but due to strolling had no chance of getting the 13.11 from Kings Cross, an hourly service.

Women’s League Top Division
STREATHAM ROYALS 1 Guildford 2
Free Adm. No Prog No Catering

Never seen a Ladies Match to completion, just a couple in part, so an interesting exercise.

There are just Seven Teams in the Top Division, Guildford mid-table with Streatham in the bottom 2. It attracted a Crowd of 30-40, suggest mostly Friends and Family.

Understand very much the same Rules, only difference appeared to be no third Official but two Referee’s, also only a 5 minute break between Periods and not returning to the Dressing Rooms, although possibly may be to reduce Ice Time and consequently cost !
Both Teams had 11 Skaters and no back up Keepers.

Big difference was ability, some being very much superior to others, especially in speed and the biggest, the much slower play and physicality, just a couple of 2 minute minors, one of 2+10, more for reckless than deliberate for a late hit and another for too many wo(men) on the ice.

Streatham did take the lead in the 1st, an equaliser came in the 2nd, but with the winner coming mid way through the 3rd it was apparent that was it.

Would I go again, at no cost and if convenient, then why not !
