3rd October 2012 Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg 0 Slovan Bratislava 1 Kontinental League 3,000

A small compact arena where even from the cheap seats (200 roubles plus 80 for a decent progarmme)
you get the full experience of the noise and intensity of the sport.

The game started at 7pm and finished at 9,15pm with a delay due to removing debris from the ice after one of the players smashed through the glass perimeter.

Slovan were much the better team with many more shots on the Avto net. Their winner came during a power play in the second period.

The visitors had Janus (handy name for a goaltender) and Satan in their team.

In the end not much for the home fans to cheer as Avto - now two wins out of ten - were definitely second best.

16 degrees inside about 2 outside minus a severe wind chill.

English National League South Div 1

Solent & Gosport Devils 2 Wightlink Raiders 3

admission £8-00 inc programme, attendance est 220

bottom (7 losses out of 7) v second (unbeaten in 5)
Devils improving all the time after a terrible start in Div 1 having come up as champions of Div 2, very unlucky here. They scored in the first minute and the visitors only pulled ahead at the end of the first period. It got niggly towards the end of the second period as the Raiders got frustrated. Devils chased the game in a fast and fluid third period but just lacked the finishing touch they needed. Home netminder Cole had a great game and saved a (dubious) penalty too.
My first ice-hockey game since the 80s (at Southampton Vikings) and no shortage of effort at this level, wouldn't say it was that skilful though. But having watched the game in Germany, I'm probably spoilt. Gosport Ice Rink is unchanged from 10 years ago when I last visited it - pretty small - but the whole complex is being rebuilt as part of a new Leisure Park (car parking currently limited), with the Ice Rink being replaced at the end of this season. Old traditions survive - loud crap music at all possible times, kids running around, shouting abuse at the players, and even the national anthem before the game still. A foghorn indicates a goal for the Devils. I quite enjoyed it - I'll be back.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

When you say replaced...do you mean they're building a new one, with the current one to be demolished, or the current one to be refurbished?

I haven't been to hardly any games over the last couple of seasons, so am out of touch with rink news.

Grounds visited: 740
Last new ground: Marine FC; Rossett Park, Crosby, Merseyside. (Northern Premier League North West Division)
Last game: Thursday 18th July 2019: Fisher 1, Saffron Walden Town 2. [Pre season match]

From this article, just a refurbishment on the same site:

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/...jor-revamp-1-4350211

but the rest of the area has already been pretty much flattened in anticipation of the Leisure Park.

Plans are still not finalised yet, by the sound of it. The capacity can't be more than 1000. Seems to be a busy place, lots of young people there.

14th October 2012 GKS Katowice 0 JKH Jastrzebie 4 Polish League 700

Jastrzebie scored early and from then until the last few minutes it was very close.

Both teams survived with two men down at times but the away goalie proved the better man and second in the league JKH went on to close out victory.

The match was played in a small arena next to the larger Spodek in, at times, a football style atmosphere.

Again to be close to the action was a noisy, dynamic experience.

And I liked the idea of the complete teams facing each other before the start and then shaking hands at the end (maybe the footballers should do the same ?)

English Premier League

Guildford Flames 6 Basingstoke Bison 2

admission £9-30, programme £2-00 (quite good), attendance 1274

An unexpected chance to visit the Spectrum to see how it is a step higher than my local team. I also took the opportunity to look at the football ground, of course.
Best attack in the league (but team on a bad run) aganst the best defence in the league. 4th v 2nd. A pretty unexpected result, then.
Flames took the game to Bison right from the start, an early goal, and 3-0 just into the second period. Bison then pulled two back quickly but in a great second period Flames grabbed three more as they overran the visitors. The period ended with a 'helmets off, gloves off' punch-up between two players (only 2+2 each for roughing).
The third period - possession stuff (they're skilful enough to do that at this level) by Flames, who held their lead comfortably.
I liked the Spectrum Arena, a lot. Friendly, well-organised, good prices. A modern rink with the choice of sitting high with a good overall view or sitting/standing low, near the action. TV screen for replays. Quitre a good atmosphere. Better music than Gosport. Shame the catering was mainly Costa and Wimpy. The power plays were sponsored by an estate agent Unsure

You'll never know how old that makes me feel! I refereed Ice Hockey at Gosport when that rink was brand new. Very similar to the Aldershot Rink built about the same time if i remember correctly.

Scottish National Ice Hockey League (7pm)
Aberdeen Lynx 1 Solway SNL Sharks 3
Admission £5
Programme None
Attendance 500 estimate

Excellent rink located on The Esplanade a stone's throw from Pittodrie. Rink was very new, clean & impressive with a large bank of seating running all the way along one side. The orginisation however was very poor, no goal judges and also no PA to let you know who or what the penalties were for. The scoreboard didn't work for the 1st quarter either. The quality of play was pretty poor to be honest but as this is the first season of hockey back in Aberdeen and the rink was full of posters advertising for volunteers to help out with various taks on match nights it's hard to be too critical of them.

Excellent crowd and I'm sure things will improve as time goes on. There's no (that I could find) website for the SNL so it was difficult to know too much about the game or who was playing & how well each team have been doing this season. Volunteers dressed in official team jerseys where at Pittordrie before the Aberdeen v Celtic SPL game early in the day handing out flyers for the game.

Aberdeen dressed 21 players so there's clearly interest in the team as was evidenced by the excellent crowd.

SWINDON WILDCATS 3 Peterborough Phantoms 3 (3-4 OT)
I paid £9 Con Adult £12 Prog £2.50

The Link Arena is some way out of Swindon, changed a lot from my only previous visit in the 80's to see Streatham, that is must have changed, as I didn't recollect anything about it, especially having two seperate Entrances, one for Ground Floor, the other for the much better viewing High Seating Stand above, all numbered and reseved, which almost Sold Out.

Game finished 3-3, must have been a worry (apart from a guaranteed Point) as up till then Wildcats had won 5, lost 7 and drawn 7, ALL of them lost in OT, this was to prove no exception, No Goal in Extra Time, then missing all 3 of their Penalty Shots, Phantoms scoring 1 of 2. Still 17 points from 20 Games is not too bad !

I said I'd be back to watch the Devils!

04 Nov - Gosport and Solent Devils 1 Cardiff Devils 9
The visiting Devils showed their class here with three in each period, starting with one in 26 seconds. They defended solidly and their attack was way more potent than Solent's. Cardiff's quality, some feisty challenges and a few penalties for 'misdemeanours' made it an enjoyable, if cold, evening.

11 Nov - Gosport and Solent Devils 5 Milton Keynes Thunder 3
At last a win for Devils in their thirteenth game. A battling win, where Solent took the lead, conceded an equalizer, then two goals at the end of the first period gave them the edge. Thunder pulled one back during the second peiod but Devils always just stayed ahead, even though the visitors had 50% more shots. Netminder Cole was in brilliant form again.

02 Dec - Gosport and Solent Devils 5 Streatham Redskins 4
Great game which gives Devils hope of avoiding bottom place. Frantic first period, early goal for Devils, but the Skins had taken the lead by the end. Devils' battling qualities save them net three goals in the second period to lead 4-2. A terrible defensive error quickly followed by the equaliser saw the game on a knife-edge but Devils retook the lead and just clung on despite conceding a stupid power-play at the end. Excellent support for the famous visitors (I saw them twice in the 1980s, at their peak) and a good punch-up after the final whistle, even better than the one at Winchester v Merthyr yesterday. Need I mention netminder Cole again?

English National Ice Hockey League Cup South Group 1
Advertised face-off time was 5.30pm (game actually started at 5.59pm)
Streatham Redskins 2 Chelmsford Chieftains 8
Admission £8
Programme £2
Attendance 90
Rink #35

Arrived in plenty of time from Sutton Athletic and was able to listen to the football full times whilst waiting to go in. Rink is adjacent to Brixton mainline station & 2-3 minutes walk from the underground. Easy win for Chelmsford and makes you wonder how they lost to the same team in the same rink last week. Rink is impressive from the outside but not so much on the inside with pretty poor sightlines from the seats. The only clear view is behind the scoreboard end goal. It's a temporary home for the Redskins though who return to their newly renovated/rebuilt rink back in Streatham sometime in late 2013.

The ENIHL continues to throw up some bizarre scorelines, with Streatham having won 19-4 & 15-4 this season but have also lost 3-12 twice & 3-14

Bracknell Hornets 2 Romford Raiders 3
Admission £6
Programme £2
Attendance 150ish.

4th visit to 'The Hive' and first to see the Hornets rather than the Bees. Really good game that was free of the goonery constantly on show in the 'Elite' League, with only 8 minutes of penalties in the entire game and none were for anything major. Romford just about deserved their win against a young Hornets team. Good view of the ice pad from the seats upstairs. It's Olympic size and looks huge!

The ENL is the place to go for honest affordable goon free hockey in the UK Smile

English Premier League

Basingstoke Bison 2 Sheffield Steeldogs 3

admission £12-00 programmme £2-00 (double Christmas version, quite good), attendance c1100

1st/10 (on eleven wins in a row) v 9th/10 (on nine defeats in a row), so a somewhat sensational, and deserved, result!
Both teams started strongly and it was soon clear that Bison weren't going to have things all their own way. Steeldogs defended well and looked dangerous on the break. Nevertheless the home team scored after 16 mins in a tight first period. But Steeldogs equalised 27 seconds into the second period (still on a power play) and took the lead less than two mionutes from the end of that period during another power play, having been the better team. Bison came out fired up in the final period and had most of the possession, even though the visitors' breaks led to four or five good saves from netminder Lyle. At last Bison made it 2-2 with 2.29 to play - cue relieved celebrations - but another slick Steeldogs attack led to the winning goal just 30 seconds later, after which they held on comfortably.
Basingstoke Arena reminds me a bit of the Guildford Spectrum, but a bit older and a bit smaller (and a bit more expensive). Both sides have lots of seating but with better design it could probably have held more. One side in particular had narrow gangways. Only one main catering outlet in the rink, plus a couple of stalls. Atmosphere OK.

English Premier League (4pm)
Swindon Wildcats 7 Peterborough Phantoms 3
Admission £12
Programme NONE (printed but not delivered apparantely, shame really as it's one of the better ones on the circuit along with Invicta)

Revisit to The Link Centre on my way home from Evesham. Previous visit was in April 2005 for a play-off game with Romford Raiders. Rink still provides excellent views of the ice pad from either the top tier seats or the standing at rink side.

A decent game descended into goonery with about 5 minutes to go when a mass brawl, numerous fights and lengthy stoppages broke out!

One of the better maintained facililties in the EPL and, like most of Swindon, easy access to the M4 for the 45 minute drive home afterwards.

Thursday 27th December

The House of Steel, Sheffield

Sheffield Steelers 9 (NINE) Nottingham Panthers 4

Attendance 8122

What a cracking night at the HOS with normal service being resumed and the Steelers stuffing the Pants! Despite the visitors camping in the Steelers zone for the first 10 minutes of the game, the home team edged in front through Frank. What looked a good Tait goal was wiped out for man in the crease and Panthers equalised through Meyers. Back came the home side and took the lead Tait which was followed by a cheap shot from Panthers Wilson on Fergusson and he was dismissed with a 5+Game penalty. Steelers took advantage and Michel made it 3-1. The 2nd period saw Steelers score two quick goals through Fata and Tait again before Galivan pulled one back to make it 5-2. Tait then competed his hattrick before Panthers Clarke made it 6-3. A Sarich bullet put Steelers clear 7-3 at the break. The final period saw Kowalski pulled in the Panthers goal with Green replacing him. Steelers weathered the storm and scored two more through Michel and captain Phillips. Time for the Panthers to lose any dignity they had left by starting the rough stuff. Frank and Lapine dropped their gloves and both took 5 min fighting pens and Limpright got the better of Galivan in another scrap. The Panthers fans were itching to go home but felt obliged to wait for the £3899 (!!!) 50/50 winner to be announced. Once it was much of the Panthers support in the impressive 8122 crowd exited the arena at top speed and missed Galivan's late consolation. Final score Steelers 9 Panthers 4. Happy days!

Saturday 30 December 2012, 6pm face off at the EnergieVerbund Arena, Dresden

Dresdner Eislöwen 3 - 1 Starbulls Rosenheim

2nd Ice Hockey Bundesliga - €11 standing (€15 for seats but they'd sold out of those)

During a trip to the beautiful Dresden (and surrounding Saxony) which I cannot recommend highly enough, we took in this sell-out game - just. The blind was drawn down at the ticket window 10 minutes before face off and most of the queue wandered off. Knowing better than that I stuck it out along with a few other stayers, one of whom, having worked out I was English, kept suggesting that I'd be better off going back into town! About 2 minutes before face-off, after telling us several times that there were no tickets left, the woman at the desk caved and sold us 4 standing tickets.

The atmosphere was fantastic. This might be wrong but I read the capacity is 4,100 and the published attendance from Saturday was 4,400. You could certainly fit plenty more people in on the standing tier but as it's not actually 'tiered' they'd be hard pressed to see past those at the front. Rosenheim scored opened the scoring in the second period before Dresden, who were the the better side, equalised towards the end of that period. Two goals in the last 10 minutes completed a deserved win for the Ice Lions and we retired to a local bar to plan our next hockey-based outing. Living in north London I am not exactly spoiled for ice hockey options but the couple we went with live in Guildford and, having just moved house, HE is planning how big a BBQ to build. What more can I ask for - BBQ building (and cooking) and ice hockey all in one weekend!

Saturday 12th January
ENIHL North Division One
Blackburn Hawks 4 Whitley Warriors 3
Admission usually £6 but got given a free ticket outside Smile
Programme £1.50 dated Saturday 20th January 2013 Crazy

The usual excellent goon free fare on offer in the ENIHL at a smart modern venue with great views from the seats. Whitley stormed into a 2 goal lead early on (first goal was after 6 seconds) before Blackburn battled back to lead 3-2 only for Whitley to tie things up again at 3-3 late on in the 3rd period. Blackburn scored their winner with just 30 seconds remaining to wrap up the win. Game started bang on the advertised 5.45pm face off time, first time I can remember an Ice Hockey game starting on time & just added to the professional impression of the set up here.

A really good dry, but bloody cold, day out in Lancashire.

English National League South Div 1

Solent & Gosport Devils 1 Bracknell Hornets 8

admission £8-00 inc small programme, attendance est 180

Devils still bottom - a bizarre performance here. In the first period they tried to match mid-table Hornet's fast style and slick passing and got stuffed - at 0-5 (where Hornets broke three on one) the Devils coach called a timeout and things improved. In the second period Devils went back to their usual aggressive, slower game and but for poor finishing (the story of their season) would have done better than lose it 1-2. Same in the third period, which had no goals but three punch-ups - it took 36 mins for the first penalty to be called but they made up for it after that (84 mins by the end). No sure why it all went sour, with the result decided long ago.
A broken electronic scoreboard meant lots of work for the stadioum announcer today, and the puck disappeared several times in the low ceiling. The ice rink is still planned for refurbishment in the summer but the rest of the leisure complex with impressive new sports hall, swimming pool and 3G pitches is pretty much complete.

English National League North Division Two North
Deeside Goons 9 Flyde Flyers 2
Admission £5
Programme £1

I used to skate at Deeside Ice Rink 30 years ago (well maybe not skate, but certainly fall on my arse a lot) & it was weired watching a hockey game here! Well it would have been weird had there actually been a 'hockey' game. Deeside are a bunch of goons & are frankly an utter disgrace. If I lived next door to the rink, I wouldn't watch these pricks again.

The ENIHL is usally free of these kind of dickheads but maybe the modern hockey world hasn't found it's way to North East Wales yet!

Still it's another one ticked off and leaves me with just Braehead Clan, Flyde Flyers, Manchester Phoenix & Solway Sharks to go in the English Leagues + Nottingham Lions depending on which ice pad they use at the NIC in Nottingham

It's not just in Deeside that it can get violent - as well as my 84 penalty minutes at Gosport yesterday, the Streatham Redskins v Invicta Dynamos produced an impressive 164 minutes (68 v 96) after a mass brawl. Division 1 South.
To be fair I've not seen that many fights in Gosport (at the Ice Rink) this season.

Solent and Gosport Devils are playing Dynamos on Jan 26 - I'm hoping to go, but will there be enough players on the ice to finish?

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

English National League 1 South
STREATHAM REDSKINS 8 Invicta Dynamo 4
at Brixton Adm £5 Con (believe £8 Adult) Prog £2

Not quite Bizarre but certainly interesting, very much THE Local Derby for which I believe Streatham have Won only once previously, having lost in excess of 30 (incl ID's previous guise as Medway Bears), attracting the largest crowd seen at the Temp Arena.

ID pay their UK Players also have two Imports on big money so usual to win relatively easily, although Streatham have now managed to find a 2nd Import who had little Ice Time and did not show much, still early days. No surprise when ID took a 10th minute lead, however the Skins came back well and deservedly scored three to lead 3-1 at end of Period.

The 2nd Period went very much the way of the 1st with both Teams playing well with Streatham scoring 4 to ID's 2 to lead 7-3 at end.

The 3rd commenced at fast pace with the Visitors beginning to show some irritation at losing to their usual whipping Boys, however for the first time in living memory Skins had no injuries and a full complement of 20 Players dressed, (ID having just 17), were meeting Fire with Fire. Then at 49.34 scored again to lead 8-3, therafter it took less than 3 minutes for the Goons to strike, started with the Skins Keeper being charged to the Ice, jumping up and remonstrating only for another ID player to start throwing punches, big no-no for Keepers and at that point Rose an ID in the Penalty Box jumped out to throw a few more, resulting in both Benches coming on Ice, mostly to hold people back. The usual suspects were involved, Mcilroy and Manny for the Skins, Baxter, Rose and surprisingly Tarczycki for ID, but no Tim Smith, wonder who was holding him back !

Result was 3 ID's and 2 Skins being thrown out of the Game and consequently ID had to finish the last 7 minutes with one less Man, although they did pull a Goal back Short Handed to finish 8-4.

Jakub Klima was Man of the Match for his 4 Goals and 3 Assists, although could well have been Keeper Will Sanderson for his performance. Justin Noble was ID's mom for his 3 Goals.

Invicta return for the final League game between the Clubs in 4 weeks, unfortunaely a Saturday with in all probability only half a Crowd. Redskins lost both their Games in Gillingham, 8-2 and 5-3.
