I was on the sides just behind the tv gantry. I thought my ticket was expensive but the view was pretty good in the end and given the occasion, I don't mind so much now. Injuries for Clark, Lenzly and Freeland now maybe diminish GB's chances at the games. Would like to see Sheffield's Devon Van Oostrum as a replacement for Lenzly.

Thursday 2 August 2012
Olympic Games Men's Basketball Preliminary Round
Argentina 82 Tunisia 69
Brazil 74 Russia 75
Both played at the Basketball Arena, Olympic Park, London
Ticket £20, Day 6 programme £5

Behind one of the baskets on the 2nd level wasn't an ideal vantage point but the basket itself was just about visible enough.

A contrasting pair of games. In game 1, Tunisia were quicker of the blocks and 14 points clear at the end of the first quarter but from then on Argentina dominated, the lead wiped out by half time and they never looked like losing the lead thereafter.

In contrast, game 2 was nip and tuck with Russia building an 11 point lead in the 3rd quarter although Brazil never looked out of it and converted the deficit into a 5 point lead late in the 4th. With six seconds on the clock, Russia were two points behind. Both teams called a time-out then with the next play Russia pulled off a 3-point basket to snatch the win. Superb stuff.

Women's Olympic Tournament
Angola 56 Croatia 75
Australia 70 Russia 66
Admission: £20/£16 (for a 16-year-old)

I had never been to a basketball match before. The game had never particularly appealed to me. However I was keen to get to see something in the Olympic Park and managed to procure tickets for the family.

The first game was between the two weakest teams in Group A and was very one-sided. With the game starting at 9am, necessitating a 5am departure from home, and an arena which was mainly in darkness, Mrs Part-Timer did nod off for a while! Our view was very good - side on just beyond one of the baskets. The seats were sufficiently steeply raked to ensure that, although we were near the back, we could see everything very clearly.

The second game was between two sides ranked equal second in the world and was closer and more skilful. However Australia should have sewn it up far earlier than they did.

My general impressions of basketball are that it's not the game for me. The most excited the crowd got was when they were being whipped up by the commentators during breaks in play, rather than by the game itself, which can't be the greatest triumph for any sport. Every break even for just a few seconds was filled with loud music or entertainment of some sort as if they were terrified of losing people's attention.

The Olympic Park was excellent. We had a thoroughly good afternoon wandering around. Security was tight but unobtrusive and took very little time to clear and the volunteers were enthusiastic, friendly and well-informed.

We had an outstanding day.

Saturday 10 November 2012
British Basketball League
Worcester Wolves 97 Cheshire Jets 84
Admission £12, programme £2

The third and final leg of my "Triple Sports Day" was a 45 minute drive from Amblecote to the Worcester University Sports Centre for my first live basketball since the Olympics.

My 4th basketball venue, placing it level with hockey and cricket in terms of number of venues that I've seen games at.

Nip and tuck for the first three quarters before Worcester motored ahead in the fourth.

Sunday 4th November
British Basketball League
Durham Wildcats 69 Manchester Giants 64
Admission £6
Free A4 Game 'Newsletter'

Manchester dominated the 1st half but paid the penalty for only scoring 22 points in the 2nd half! Not their regular venue apparently & a very makeshift set up although perfectly adequate for the 200 or so who turned up. Very good value at £6, Newcastle Eagles in the same league charge £16!!

Homes games usually played at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre but playing here was very handy as it's only 5 miles from The Billingham Forum for the Ice Hockey.

Saturday 1st December
English National League Division 1
LEICESTER WARRIORS 71-68 LEEDS CARNEGIE (OT)

Admission / programme: none
Attendance: 20
Coffee: £1.25
@ Braunstone Leisure Centre, Leicester

Couldn't be arsed to stand freezing my bollocks off this afternoon so had a walk to the local leisure centre.

Never been to a basketball game before but enjoyed this one. The two teams were pretty evenly matched throughout with Leeds ahead at the end of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters. A three point shot in overtime won it for the Warriors.

1Q: 17-21
HT: 35-38
3Q: 48-50
4Q: 65-65

Did take my camera but permission was required to take them. After inquiring at reception was told the relevant member of staff was busy cashing up but would come find me in the sports hall. Fair enough but said person never showed their face and no photos taken.

BBL Championship
LONDON LIONS vs Cheshire Phoenix @ National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace
Adm £15 (Conc £7) Prog £1.50

Noticed an advert earlier today, sure it said vs Chester Jets and being less than 2 miles from Home churlish not to pay a visit.

Only my 6th ever BB game, none previously had "moved" me, even at Toronto Rapters, however decided to try again but yet again nothing to encourage a further vist, although undoubtedly will see a Game at the Copper Box Olympic Village when they eventually move on. Programme referred to the Visitors as both Cheshire Phoenix and Jets so suspect at some time were the Chester Jets, not that it matters.

The whole Experience appeared very Amateur for a Top Level Game, Programme errors, pay at a Table Top, being "stamped" on the back hand as no defined Spectator Area, Swimmers, Squash Players etc., all mingling and worst of all a deep American voice commentating on the action throughout, plus a Cheer Leader of sorts coming out at half-time and attempting to encourage a crowd of possibly 300 to sing along ! Further with Rolling Subs Cheshire only had 6 men in total.

Pricey at £15 for an Adult for a Game lasting 40 mins, although did start on time and as it happened finished exactly 1 1/2 hours later. Next Visitors Mersey Tigers, played 16 lost 16, it can only get worse !

The Game itself was end-to-end, as usual, with the Lions taking a half-time lead of 45-42thereafter allowing the Phoenix to lead 77-78 with just 6 seconds left, which proved the Final Score. Would love to say the better Team Won, but in all honesty jusr don't know !

They started the season as Cheshire Jets but I think there was some financial shenanigans or other. I think there's new owners hence the new name.

International
England 80 Ireland 82

British Basketball League Cup Final
Leicester Riders 85 Newcastle Eagles 80

Both played at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham
Admission £18, programme £5

Basketball venue no. 5 - only seen football and rugby league at more places.

Game 1 was nip and tuck all the way through and could have gone either way, Ireland snatched it at the death.

In game 2, Leicester looked to have it sewn up with a 14 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter but Newcastle chipped away at it and managed to get a point in front before conceding six points in the last minute or so.

They only just managed to start the season as Cheshire Jets. The guy who took over subsequently decided it wasn't financially viable and sold the name. The BBL withdrew the franchise and after a community fundraising effort the team was reincarnated as Cheshire Phoenix.

£15 is steep for a BBL game but I think the Lions are driven by what Crystal Palace charge them. £8 - £10 is the norm around the league with many teams running special offers. The game is 4 quarters of 10 minutes but the clock stops when the fouls are awarded etc. An hour and a half to an hour and three quarters is the normal duration of a match night.

LEICESTER RIDERS 84-59 MANCHESTER GIANTS
BBL Championship

Adm: £10 + £1 b/fee - advance
Prog: £2
Coffee: £1

The highly fancied Riders hit the ground running and opened up a ten point gap at the end of the 1st quarter (24-14), but then struggled to get any rhythm going for the next two quarters. They led 37-28 at the half and 55-44 and the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter saw the Riders play some superb basketball and showed why they are at the top of the table, outscoring the Giants by 29-15.

Not that up on the sport but Drew Sullivan was top draw.

Managed to park for free on Eastern Boulevard which is a five minute walk from the John Sandford.

Saturday 30th March 2013

Leicester Riders 93-70 Durham Wildcats
BBL

Adm: £10 + £1 advance b/fee
Prog: £2
Att: a full house

The John Sandford was packed to the rafters for what would be the Riders last ever regular season game at the venue, and also the small matter of clinching the BBL Championship for the first ever time.

After an even first five or six minutes, the Riders ended the 1st quarter nine points up. This was a lead they never relinquished and they increased their lead at half time to 52-40. By the end of the 3rd quarter their lead had stretched to seventeen points (75-52), meaning the final quarter was a formality and the celebrations began.

Leicester City Council should be ashamed of themselves that there is no venue for the Riders to play in next season. The club hope to build a venue on land at Leicestershire County Cricket club but this could be a year or two yet, that's if it ever gets built at all.

LEICESTER RIDERS 60-40 SHEFFIELD SHARKS
British Basketball League

Adm: £12 (inc. £1 b/fee)
Prog: none, but they now issue a monthly magazine for £3.50

The Riders are still playing at the John Sandford, and this was pretty much a sell out. The game and the Riders took a while to get going with neither team setting the court alight. It wasn't until the latter stages of the 3rd quarter that the Riders started to exert some control, and in the 4th they were totally dominant on both defence and offence.

The football hating wife came with me and she enjoyed it, adding that she will come with me again. I again parked for free on Eastern Boulevard and pre-match drinks were had in the Soar Point.

Birmingham Knights 95 Sheffield Sharks 102
Admission £12 (advance discount), programme £2.50 - vastly overpriced.

Top level basketball returned to Birmingham, although the North Solihull Leisure Centre in Chelmsley Wood is not the easiest of places to find!

Having suffered a couple of heavy away defeats in their first two games, the Knights came close to snatching a win in a nip and tuck game which was only settled in the last couple of minutes.

Heading back this Saturday and will be making a few visits throughout the season.

LEICESTER RIDERS 81-72 GLASGOW ROCKS
Adm: free - won two tickets

Glasgow got out of the blocks quickly, with at one point in the first quarter twelve points up, but despite missing baskets Leicester dug in and were 23-19 down after the opening ten minutes. The 2Q was a lower scoring affair with the Riders ending the half with a one point advantage 35-34. The points were shared in the 3rd (13 each), and a tense 4th quarter ensued. The Rocks edged it 20-19 to take it into over time. The Riders dominated the five minute overtime period out scoring their visitors 14-5 to record their fifth win in six games.
