But they’d have to start in D4 where it’s virtually impossible to operate as a pro club and you’re then looking at three year minimum just to get to D1. Worthing and Leopards both bought existing clubs and moved them, but EB have tightened up on how far they’ll let a club move especially when it’s clearly a takeover. Having said that Leicester Warriors appear to be dying on their arse, so that might have been possible. They just needed to recruit a couple experienced Brits and get three – rather than two – yanks, though obviously losing 1 of them on his debut didn’t hel.

Ah, I thought they might have been fast-tracked into Division One as a potential BBL side but obviously not. Can't argue with your assessment regarding recruitment.

no, different organisations. Even if you let your club you have start in D4. BBL clubs get away with mid-season newcos, though.

Saturday 8 February 2014
British Basketball League
Birmingham Knights 78 Cheshire Phoenix 91
Ticket £6 (pre-Christmas online deal)

Still waiting the first win of the season at the Knights, but there were grounds for optimism when they were only 3 points behind at half time, having recovered from an atrocious start to the 2nd quarter.

Same old story from then on though as too many mistakes and needless fouls meant the game ran away from them.

Correcting the final score there. For some reason the edit option isn't working.

Top v bottom clash but you couldn't have told this in the first half as both sides were nip and tick and went in 32-all at half time. Indeed, not until the latter part of the 3rd quarter did the Eagles pull away and finish well ahead.

Sunday 13 April 2014
British Basketball League
Cheshire Phoenix 97 Birmingham Knights 78
Admission £12, programme included.

The Northgate Arena is quite easy to find and timely as apparently Phoenix are moving to a new venue for 2014-15 according to the match programme.

Well, when winless Birmingham raced into a 15-2 lead, the handful of away fans were daring to hope albeit deep down we expected this to be as good as it got. The lead reduced to one point by half time and it seemed only to be a matter of time.

And so it proved. Cheshire took the lead for the first time 30 seconds into Q3 and from then on the result was never in doubt.

Probably my last basketball fixture of 2013-14, hoping to return next year.

(BBL)

Admission: £11 + £1 booking fee
Programme: £2 (game specific)

A hard fought win for the Riders who trailed at the end of each of the first 3 quarters. The shooting was not great from either side with the home side hitting only 25 of their 58 two point attempts. Neil Watson top scored for the Riders with 21 points.

Good news for the Riders is that they have been granted planning permission for their new venue back in Leicester - http://www.leicesterriders.co.uk/news/leicester-community-sports-arena-granted-planning-permission/

LEICESTER RIDERS 93-82 GLASGOW ROCKS

Adm: £11
Prog: £2

The Riders gained revenge over the Rockers after an agonising last second defeat two weeks ago, though they did it the hard way. The first quarter was even with the Riders ahead by a point 23-22. For the next quarter and a half they struggled on the offence and the visitors went in at the half six ahead. They increased their lead to fourteen at one point before the hosts found their shooting range and staged a remarkable turnaround, and by the end of the 3rd quarter were 68-61 up. In the 4th they outscored Glasgow by four points to win by an eleven point margin.

Neil Watson top scored with 25 points for the Riders.

LEICESTER RIDERS 81-70 WORCESTER WOLVES
(BBL Trophy QF)

Adm: £11

Fourth Riders game on the season and a cracking atmosphere inside the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall. The Riders hit the ground running in this one, helped by some impressive three point shooting and strong defence. By half time they were ahead by 51-36. The scoring slowed down in the 3rd quarter but the Riders lead had only been reduced by one point. Worcester hit eight unanswered points at the start of the fourth quarter and at one point had reduced the Riders lead to just four points, but the home side held their nerve down the stretch and saw the game out and finished with a nine point cushion.

Sunday 1st March 2015

LEICESTER RIDERS 80-63 LONDON LIONS
(BBL Trophy Semi Final 2nd Leg)

Admission: £11
Programme: £2

The Riders took a huge step towards a final against the Newcastle Eagles. The visitors who included two former Riders players in Drew Sullivan and Zaire Taylor were quick out of the blocks and at one point during the first quarter were thirteen points up (21-8). Come the end of the game Sullivan and Taylor contributed more than half of the Lions points between them. The Riders got back into the game and drew level right on the buzzer for half time with a 2pt fg from Pavol Losonsky.

The second half saw the Riders restrict their visitors to just twenty three points, with some impressive defensive rebounding and blocks. They gradually pulled away with a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter.

Trayvonn Wright top scored for the hosts with twenty one points and these included some high flying dunking, while Neil Watson was deservedly awarded the MVP for his 18 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists.

TrayVonn Wright was a good NCAA D1 player at North Dakota State until last year, I would have thought he would be a class above the level of players British Basketball can normally attract from the US

Hopefully that is a good sign if the BBL can start to attract better quality US and European players.

I think he (Wright) signed around December time and himself and Watson (Southern Mississippi) are both crowd favourites this season, and they along with two other Americans, Rashad Hassan and Tyler Bernadini form four of the starting five for the Riders. The other being Nottingham born Jamell Anderson.

LEICESTER RIDERS 106-86 PLYMOUTH RAIDERS
(BBL)

Adm: £11
Prog: £2

My final regular season game @ the Riders this season and I saw them hit the 100 point mark for the first time. Also it was the most points I have seen them concede as well.

Both teams hit the ground running in the first quarter with hardly any shots being missed and the hosts were eight points up 31-23. The scoring didn't really let up in the second with only six less points being scored, and the Riders had increased their lead by two to go in at the half 56-46 ahead. The third saw Plymouth get to within a point at one stage but the Riders hit back and had a lead of seven going into the final ten minutes. The fourth quarter saw the hosts take control with Neil Watson and Treyvonn Wright putting on a show for the crowd.

Watson had another 14 assists and leads the BBL in this aspect, but it was another American Tyler Bernadini who was awarded the MVP with 26 points and six rebounds.

LEICESTER RIDERS 82-62 MANCHESTER GIANTS
(BBL)

Adm: £13
Prog: £2

First basketball game of the new season and the Riders are still based @ Loughborough University while the new arena in Leicester is built. This should be completed in January.

The Riders made it four wins out of four, though only after a sluggish start. The Giants, managed by former Rider Yorrick Williams lead by three (19-22) after the first quarter, but a 31 point blast in the second by the Riders turned the game in the home side's favour, and they went in at the half 50-34.

A quieter second half in terms of points scoring with a 32-28 swing in favour of Leicester, and they comfortably saw the game out to record the victory.

TreyVonn Wright was the top scorer for the Riders with 20 points.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENT RIDERS 73-71 HEMEL STORM
(NBL Cup 3rd Round)
@ Loughborough University Netball Centre

Adm / prog: none
Att: around 50-60

This cup tie saw Division 2 Students win an absorbing encounter against their Division 1 opponents. Hemel led by a few points at the end of both the 1st quarter and half time, but despite going behind by ten points at one point, the Students went ahead at the end of the 3rd 51-49. The scores were level going into the last possession of the game, and a neat pass found Harrison Gamble who scored the winning basket with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock.

LEICESTER RIDERS 62-60 SHEFFIELD SHARKS
BBL Cup Quarter Final

Adm: £13
Prog: £2

Often the case when I watch the Riders they come from behind, but in this case it was Sheffield who very nearly did it to them. An even first quarter saw the sides level at 15 a piece, but by the end of the 3rd the Rider lead by ten. Sheffield, who were lead by the impressive Jerrold Brooks 27 points, clawed it round and even lead at one point. The Riders dug deep and stopped the Sharks scoring in the final play of the game to book their place in the semi-finals.

As the score suggest defences were on top in this game, though plenty of baskets were missed from both sides. I did feel the Riders missed the three point shooting of Guard Tyler Bernadini who is out with a knee injury - they only hit one of sixteen three point attempts.

Next up for me is their game on the 28th November v Cheshire Phoenix.

LEICESTER RIDERS 86-79 CHESHIRE PHOENIX

Adm: £13
Prog: £2

A full house in the Sir David Wallace @ Loughborough Uni. As it stands the Riders only have three games left here (Dec 5th, Dec 22nd and Jan 2nd) before they move to their new arena in Leicester. The planned first home game is scheduled for Jan 30th v Surrey.

This was another tight victory for the Riders over a decent Cheshire side. The 1st quarter saw the lead change hands on numerous occasions, with the Riders ahead by 23-21 come the end of the opening ten minutes. The 2nd quarter saw Leicester come out firing and scored 13 points without reply. Their lead increased to a maximum of 18 or 19 before the Phoenix rallied. At the end of the half they lead by 14 @ 49-35.

Come the third quarter and it was the visitors who upped their game and clawed their way back into it. A seven point swing in their favour reduced the arrears to just seven. Cheshire continued to have the upper hand in the 4th and briefly led at one point. Neil Watson put the Riders back in front immediately, and then they saw out the game in the final stretch.

Jordan Williams (Cheshire) led the scoring on the night with an impressive 28 point haul, while Tyler Bernadini was the Riders top scorer with 17. Drew Sullivan was awarded the home MVP with him finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists.

Only been the once three years ago, even though it is only a 15 minute walk away.

The main reason why I don't is that the majority of their fixtures are played on a Saturday afternoon, and this clashes with football and rugby.

They don't help themselves with their scheduling, but then they make no effort to attract fans anyway - they should be able to tap in to the Riders fan-base if they tried. The only time I've seen a crowd - rather than a gathering - there was when the stages the finals day in 2013 and we (Leopards) drunk the bar dry after winning the National Trophy.
We play our home games on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, but even then we lose people to football. Such is life.

Good points you make - they (the Warriors) do have a game that starts @ 4.30pm on the 19th December @ Gateway College. This works out well as I can double it up with Beaumont Town (1.30pm ko).

I'd be interested to know what you think of Gateway. I'm told it's a dump that shouldn't be staging D1 games, but we've never had the pleasure.
You should try to make it to Loughborough on Sunday 13th for the Cup semi against Worthing. Obviously the "students" have beaten Hemel, if they can keep Ward quiet (he bottles a physical game) and try limit the new American of the boards, they could spring a surprise and get to the final. Admittedly they'll get murdered by Manchester or Derby if they get there, but it would still be an achievement.

Will more than likely be at the Students semi final - no plans that day. I saw them beat Hemel in the 3rd round with a buzzer beater from Harrison Gamble.

Regarding Gateway - I saw football there back in September and from the outside it looks like there has been money spent improving the facilities.
