LEICESTER RIDERS 75-65 LONDON LIONS
(BBL Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg)

Leicester win by a 22 point aggregate margin

With a full house at the David Wallace there was a nervous anticipation around the place. A slow start from both sides, and it wasn't until a few minutes in that any points were scored. Come the end of the first quarter and the Lions led 15-16. During the second quarter the Lions had increased their lead on the night to ten points, but a few three pointers from the hosts reduced the deficit, and come the end of the half the Lions led by three, but still trailed by nine on aggregate.

That was as good as it got for the visitors with the Riders outscoring the Lions in both the 3rd (19-13) and 4th (22-15) quarters. The game did become very scrappy during the 3rd with both sides missing a lot of shots.

In the final Leicester will either play Cheshire or Newcastle.

Trayvonn Wright was the top scorer on the night with 16 for the Riders, closely followed by 15 from Neil Watson. Shane Walker had the most rebounds with 8. For the Lions Demond Watt led the way with most points (13) and rebounds (9).

There are currently only two more Riders games planned at Loughborough Uni - 22nd Dec v Bristol and 2nd Jan v Leeds, before they hopefully move into their new arena, with the aim being the first game will be on January 30th v Surrey.

LEICESTER WARRIORS 72-71 (OT) TEES VALLEY MOHAWKS
(NBL Division 1)

@ Gateway College Sports Hall, Leicester
Adm / prog: none
Att: about 25
Snacks and bottled water from a vending machine

Firstly Gateway should not be hosting D1 basketball - totally inadequate for the few spectators watching. Spectators are only allowed down one side of the court with a row of individual fold up seats - annoyingly this is on the side of the scoreboard. Fortunately I managed to get live stats on the internet to keep track of the proceedings. Also there was only about a foot between the court and the seats. Not a venue that I will be visiting again in a hurry.

The game...A close one throughout with the visitors ahead 17-15 at the end of the 1st, but by half time it was 31-31. All square again at the end of the 3rd with the teams tied at 45-45. TV looked to have had the game won as they had a 66-61 lead with thirty odd seconds to play, but they squared it up with a couple of seconds left from a free throw after a foul on a 2pt fg. The Warriors won it in the 1st overtime period, and left the visitors with a three hour drive home.

The stats from the game can be found here...

Re: [rambler77] Where are you going - where did you go? BASKETBALL [In reply to] Can't Post or

Basketball season is here. Most games are in Taipei, but for next 2-3 weekends the fixtures are in Changhua, 90 miles away as opposed to 250 miles away!

Super Basketball League - Taiwan
KKL 63-60 Bank of Taiwan (7th v 6th)
Yulon Dinos 82-71 Fubon Braves (3rd v 4th)

Adm: $NT300 - about 6
Att: About 800 at game 1, about 2200 at game 2.

I fancied a day out and I'd had Lukang on my list for a few weeks. It turned out that there was basketball being played in Changhua this weekend, which has a railway station and is where buses to Lukang leave from! I wanted to travel on Sunday but with Sheffield Wednesday in action on Sunday, I decided to go on Saturday instead.

I got off the bus in Changhua at Changhua County Government after nearly 3 hours in Lukang and walked along Nangou Road, got to a crossroads then across into Huayang Street. Down the steps at the end, left and then right, up the hill to Changhua Arena. It's up hill out of town next to Changhua Stadium which holds about 15,000.

Tickets were 200/300 NT but I got a 300 ticket and sat in the 200 seats. The arena has 16-19 rows on all 4 sides, curving up in the middle down the sides with spectators a good 15 foot above court level. The $NT300 seats are on bleachers at ground level on both sides, seating 350 or so on each side. The arena itself has a domed roof and overall, a good place to watch basketball.

Game 1, advantage to the Bank of Taiwan in the early stages. As expected 6ft 8in American Kyle Barone for KKL and 7ft 2in Australian Luke Nevil for Bank of Taiwan were the key players and unsurprisingly topped the scoring charts. First quarter, BoT lead almost thoroughout and were 14-18 up after Q1.

Q2 and Barone started to shine. It was an even quarter, the score going 20-18, then 20-25, 25-25 before both sides scored twice in quick succession, 29-29 at half-time. I expected it continue like this but I was wrong... BoT were 37-31 ahead after 3 mins of the quarter 3 but then KKL went basket crazy. They edged ahead 38-37, conceded the lead again before scoring 14 unanswered points to lead 52-39!

It was always going to be a mountain to climb for BoT but they pulled it back to within 4 with 5 minutes to go, 54-50. With 3 minutes left, they trailed by a single basket at 58-56 and things started to get very tense. But, there wasn't to be a great turnaround as KKL edged out the Bank of Taiwan 63-60 after a fantastic second half.

Yulon Dinos v Fubon Braves was a better standard, and the game was a lot higher scoring. Earl Barron, the 7ft American giant was the stand out player with an incredible first half. The 1st quarter was manic, Dinos were leading 16-13 before they started to break away, going into the second quarter leading 24-16.

They continued to dominate the scoring, at one point leading 33-20 as threatened to go miles out of sight. The Braves managed to get back into the game, but were still 43-33 down at half-time. In the third, the Dinos pulled ahead 55-40 to surely end the game with 16 minutes to play. Earl Barron had scored his 25th point just 3 minutes into the third quarter when the score was 50-40. They began to hack into the deficit as they outscored the Dinos 17-9 in the final 6 minutes of the third.

Just like Bank of Taiwan, the Fubon Braves threatened to pull off an incredible comeback. With 2 minutes of the 4th quarter gone, they were just 3 behind at 64-61, bear in mind the score had been 55-40 9 minutes before! It looked as if they were going to be able to catch the Dinos, but that possibility was soon erased. The Dinos started playing again, pulling away to 72-63 and whilst the deficit was reduced to 75-70 with 3 to play, the Dinos finished strongly to win 82-71. Earl Barron scored 33 of Braves 71 points.

It was at 1905, and my train back was 2040 so I decided to stay for the first quarter of the third game between Taiwan Beer and Pure Youth Construction. The standard didn't look as good as game two but it turned out to be 2nd v 1st! When I left, it was 15-11 to Taiwan Beer. It ended 66-73.

All downhill on the way back. Got to the station at 2020, so could have watched a bit more for sure. Train eventually left at 2055 due to a late express, which meant a dreaded last minute platform alteration, but the train then had to wait for another express to depart. Not sure if drinking on trains here is legal, but a comfy and relaxed 2 1/2 hours back to Tainan anyway!

Hopefully more games get shifted to Changhua in the New Year, or I may have to go to Taipei. Enjoyable day out.

Tom

Saturday 2nd January 2016

LEICESTER RIDERS 91-43 LEEDS FORCE
(BBL)

Adm: 13 (advance)
Prog: 2

The last ever Riders game at the Sir David Wallace before they move to their new arena in Leicester, and again it was pretty much a sell out. The team produced a complete performance from start to finish, and in the games that I have seen, this was up there with the best of them.

TreyVonn Wright started the scoring with a 2pt fg and he and his team mates hit a further ten points before Leeds got off the mark. Come the end of the 1st quarter and the Riders led 25-12. Another seven point swing in the second gave them a half time lead of 45-25. No let up in the 3rd in both offence and defence, as they restricted Leeds to just 8 points and scoring another 27. The fourth quarter saw coach Rob Paternostro give game time to his squad players, and all five on court were British for the whole duration. A 19-10 swing saw the final margin of victory increase to 48 points.

All twelve players got on the score sheet with four players hitting double figures, led by 13 from Tyler Bernadini. Trevor Gruis led the way on the rebounding front with ten. The biggest cheer of the night came when Anthony Rowe returned from a long injury lay off.

My next basketball game will be on Sunday 17th January for the BBL Cup Final in Birmingham.

I do wonder how long Leeds will last in the BBL. It hasn't worked and with university funding gone (or almost gone) it's hard to see how they have a long-term future at that level. Their problem is D1 is full, so there's no safety net.
My next game will see me on the press bench at the O2 for the NBA game on Thursday :) If I can face four games in as many days, I'll join you in Brum.

Tickets sorted for the Cup Final through the Riders - 30 each for the wife and myself. Plan to get the 11.19 train from Leicester, with the aim of having some lunch for getting to the arena around 1.30 - 2pm.

Also sorted tickets for the Riders first game at their new arena on January 30th.

Sunday 17th January 2016

Newcastle Eagles 94-82 Leicester Riders
(BBL Cup Final - @ Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham)

Adm: 30
Prog: 5 (overpriced)
Bottled water / soft drinks: 2.20!!!

Excellent seats in the lower tier (section 4) gave a good view of the action. The seats though, while had plenty of room width wise were completely inadequate in terms of leg room. I'm 6'3"" and found it a difficult, and even my wife who is only 5'2" didn't have enough space.

The game...well for 25 minutes the Riders took the game to Newcastle and it was a brilliant advert for British basketball. The Riders were absolutely superb and at times their basketball was unplayable making an Eagles side look ordinary. Midway through the third and the Riders had a lead of 14 points, but credit to Newcastle. They showed why they are the best team in the country, and at the end of the 3rd had reduced the deficit to four. The fourth quarter did have a feel of inevitability about it, in my mind anyway. Though with around three minutes left it was still a one point ball game. The Riders inability to score points (only 12) in the final quarter was a telling difference. I also felt that they ran out of steam, and made mistakes and errors that weren't their early on.

Congratulations to Newcastle, but the Riders will learn from this and they are too good a side not to win any silverware this season.

Next up for me is the opening game at the Riders new arena on January 30th.

LEICESTER RIDERS 77-60 SURREY SCORCHERS
(BBL Trophy QF)

Adm: 11 (advance)
Prog: 3
Hot Dog: 3
Nachos: 2.50

This was opening night at the Riders new arena on the edge of the city centre. It is located in the middle of an industrial estate, and as expected parking was at a premium. Instead we (the wife and I) chose to park in the John Lewis car park which is 2.50 after 5pm on a Saturday, and is around a 15 minutes walk away.

I've seen the capacity quoted as either 2,500 or 2,400 but either way it was declared a sell out, though not all seats were taken up. The majority of the seating is on the sidelines with twenty rows of seats on each side, and there are small sections behind both baskets. The first 14 rows have padded seat and they cost and extra 3 (14) in advance. There is also plenty of leg room for tall people, and enough room under the seats for bags and coats.

The Riders came into this on the back of an impressive win at defending champions Newcastle the night before, and this was not a classic and it took a few minutes for the first points to be scored. This went to Surrey, while former South Dakota Coyote Trevor Gruis had the honour of being the first Riders player to score.

Surrey's Miller was the top scorer on the night with an impressive 23 points, while Drew Sullivan hit 14 from the bench for the Riders, with eight straight at one point during the second quarter.

Tickets can be booked in advance for all their remaining home games, with the next being on Sunday 14th February at 4pm v Plymouth or Sheffield in the Semi Final of the Trophy.

my own personal thread!!!

Sunday 14th February 2016

LEICESTER RIDERS 79-79 SHEFFIELD SHARKS
(BBL Trophy Semi Final 1st Leg)

@ Leicester Community Sports Arena
Adm: 11 (advance)
Programme: 3
Attendance: unsure, but nowhere near full. Maybe around 1,600?

I expected a tight, close game between these two sides and that is how it turned out!!! Neither side built up a lead of any sort, with the largest I can recall being around seven points.

All to play for in the return leg in Sheffield on Wednesday night, with the winners playing Newcastle in the final next month.

Leopards are in Leicester (Warriors) on Sunday lunchtime. Unfortunately it's my wife's birthday so it'll be a rare miss for me - she still hasn't forgiven me for leaving her at home with a baby to go to Reading on her 40th. However you should go instead.

I have had the Warriors - Leopards game pencilled in for a while and I have got permission to photograph the game from the Warriors. Will be my first time photographing any indoor sport.

Also Braunstone Leisure Centre is only a 15-20 minute walk from home.

You'll find it's much harder than photographing football. It's much quicker, it must have been a 'mare in the days before digital.
If you do get any decent shots and you want a wider audience, drop me a PM and I can put them on our site.

(National League Division 1)
@ Braunstone Leisure Centre, Leicester

Adm: none
Att: around 30ish including three of the Leicester Riders players

Not a bad afternoons entertainment with the visitors always looked like they would take home the victory. A 20-14 lead at the end of the 1st increased by another eight in a low scoring 2nd, and the went in at the half 37-23 up. Come the end of the 3rd at the Leopards lead had increased to 19. It wasn't until the 4th unfortunately the Warriors showed their 'A' game, scoring an impressive 27 points, and reduced the arrears by 14 points.

Theo Rothstein bagged 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors, while Justin Hitchman bagged 19 points and 7 rebounds from the bench for the Leopards.

I have put 37 photos of the game online @ http://rambler77.zenfolio.com/p538783290

- this was my first attempt at photographing the sport. With the Warriors having a couple more Sunday games coming up in the next month, I will have another go at it.

My first Riders game since the draw with Sheffield on Valentine's Day, and Bristol were the only team I had yet to see the Riders play.

This was as comprehensive victory as you could get - MVP Trevor Guis scored the hosts opening six points and by the end of the 1st quarter the Riders had opened up a 30-13 lead.

Two tighter quarters followed and then a 14 point swing in favour of the hosts in the 4th put Bristol out of their misery.

LEICESTER RIDERS 77-56 SHEFFIELD SHARKS
(BBL)

Adm: 11 (advance)
Prog: 3

The Riders had a shock defeat @ Leeds the night before, and needed a win against the Sharks to keep up their title hopes.

This was my third viewing of Riders - Sharks games this season and the two previous ones had resulted in a two point victory for Leicester and a draw, and with this in mind a tight, close game was expected.

The first half certainly lived up to my expectations with both defences on top and the Rider held a narrow three point lead 33-30.

The second saw the Riders dominate on defence even more, though there were plenty of missed baskets on both sides. The home side did they act together on the offensive side of things and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Going into the final two games of the season the Riders and Newcastle are locked together on 28 wins each, though Leicester have beaten Newcastle twice this season in the league. The final game between them is on Friday and this will ultimately decide who will be crowned BBL League Champions.

Adm: 11 (advance)
Prog: 3

Leeds are probably the most improved team in the BBL and had been the Riders recently. The 1st leg the night before resulted in a five point lead for Leicester, and Leeds brought a decent and noisy following down the M1.

The visiting fans had something to cheer about early on as they had an early lead in a scrappy first quarter. It took a while for the Riders to settle down, and the lead exchanged hands a few times. Come the end of q1 it was 17-17. Another low scoring ten minutes followed with only thirty points scored between the two teams - the Riders leading 34-30.

Defensively the Riders are the best team in the BBL and set a record during the league campaign for the fewest points per game conceded in the league's history. This was especially evident in the 3rd quarter as they restricted Leeds to just nine points. Some offensive basketball finally came out during the 4th as the hosts ran out comfortable winners in the end.

MVP for the night was Trevor Gruis with a double-double of twelve points and twelve rebounds. Kwan Waller was top scorer on the night with 16 points for the Force.

The semi-finals are next weekend with the Riders home leg being Sunday May 1st (5pm tip off). At the time of writing their opponents are yet to be decided.

No - finances dictated otherwise. Would have been the best part of 150 for me and the missus - tickets, food, travel etc.

Went to the Ricoh for rugby league that afternoon instead.
