Demise of the printed programme (rugby league) Can't Post or Reply Privately

Clubs in rugby league's top three tiers are starting to ditch printed programmes.

Batley (available as a free download) and Hull Kingston Rovers (and possibly Leigh) are 'digital only' for 2019.

Newcastle and Widnes have confirmed they won't be doing a 'physical' programme.

Those continuing in print include Barrow (£2.50), Dewsbury, London (£3, 40pp), Oldham, Sheffield (£3, 40pp), Swinton, Whitehaven, Workington and York (£3, 26pp).

Looks as though Bradford and Halifax will again merely do an insert in their respective local newspaper.

For 2019, Dewsbury are issuing a 24-page programme, price £2.50. Various contributors, all volunteers. Pretty decent effort.

Hunslet, who issued individual match programmes last season, have confirmed for 2019 they'll be producing a monthly magazine. Covering all the games in any particular month, it will be an in-season extension of the club's existing quarterly magazine, South of the River.

St Helens are sticking with a 'physical' programme for 2019. Price is £3. Interestingly, Saints, supported by Saints Heritage Society, will be running a series of 'retro' covers throughout 2019. They're asking fans to send in their ideas (favourite covers from seasons past). Good to see that sort of engagement. For the season-opening Wigan game (31/1), in addition to the regular match programme, Saints produced 200 copies (available only from the club shop) with a one-off cover celebrating wing Tommy Makinson's 200th Saints appearance. Warrington Audi is the programme's season-long sponsor.

Looks as though Featherstone Rovers won't, in 2019, bother with even the basic foldout 'physical programme' they sold for a quid last season. Nothing online, it seems.

Not had time to update my where did you go posts for the last couple of weeks, but I was at Leigh's opening league game versus Toulouse, and can confirm the programme was available as a download only. It was free, but the Leigh website didn't make it clear if that was as an opening day of the season offer, or whether all editions will be free. It was the usual excellent effort from Leigh of recent seasons, 56 pages packed with reading material. Leigh supporters who wanted a physical copy were asked to e-mail the club if they would be interested in a season long subscription at £3.00 per issue plus postage costs - not sure whether this would be dependent on demand.

The Leigh issue downloaded as a pdf file, which was easily saved so as to be accessed from any device. The only previous game I had attended with an online programme was Glasgow Hawks rugby union last year. They did give out a basic four pager on the gate, but the online issue had much more match specific content. However, it downloaded as a web page and appeared impossible to save (other than saving the web page itself, which presumably would only be available as long as it remains on the website).

Oldham's 2019 match programme consists of 24 pages (only three of them ads) for £3. A redesign took place during the close-season. The issue looks good and reads well.

Super League Wakefield Trinity have confirmed they are no longer issuing printed programmes. I didn't ask (because digital programmes don't interest me) when emailing the club, but there's no reference on the club website to a digital alternative.

There was a physical programme at Newcastle on Saturday. I didn't buy one though so I don't know if it was a double header, a Newcastle programme, or a Toronto programme.

I had a feeling there might be a one-off programme for that 'event' at Kingston Park. I didn't enquire because I had other plans.

From the Wakefield Trinity Website
"Wakefield Trinity are delighted to announce a brand new look for the 2019 match day programmes.
The Club are delighted to be working alongside local paper, Wakefield Express to create a brand new eight page editorial insert for every home game of the 2019 season". They also charge £1 to buy one on matchday's.
Toulouse - issued a glossy style programme for their home game against Widnes - I'm not sure if it is the same 1 page glossy sheet which was issued last season.
Huddersfield Giants - appear to be issuing a physical programme as one has appeared on sale on ebay.

So, no proper programme! Sounds as dire and pointless as the offerings from Bradford and Halifax. The T&A, the Courier and the (Wakefield) Express must be desperate. Have these local newspapers' sports desks simply become an extension of the clubs' PR operations?

No one laments the passing of programmes more than me. As chairman and programme editor for Leigh Centurions Iíve tried to force back the tide. To no avail. In Super Lge we sold over a thousand programmes per issue. Last season we were selling just over 200. With minimum print runs etc we were losing several hundred pounds per issue. We now do a 56pp programme digitally. I write it so the costs are nil apart from the designer whose costs are covered by the programme sponsor. We asked fans who were interested in a subscription to email in so I could get some printed. We have had 12 responses so far. I am trying to maintain standards and a historical record. The programme takes me 25hrs minimum. Iím grateful for Onion Bagís simply fantastic photos which really enhance it. For the Toulouse game we had 1,200 downloads so at least itís getting a wider audience and our sponsors are getting wider recognition. We will have a free download each issue this season. Thatís how it is. If anyone has any suggestions Iíd be grateful to receive them. Nothingíd please me more than having the programme printed again.

Can't knock the reasoning, GH.

Meanwhile, Hull have, for 2019, ditched individual match programmes and gone instead for a monthly magazine, The 18th Man. It's 64 pages, costs a quid and is A4 (every collector's least favourite size!). It will continue, monthly, out of season:

http://www.hullfc.com/...sion-of-the-18th-man

A summary of what we know thus far:

Still in print (individual match issue): Barrow (£2.50), Coventry (£2), Dewsbury (£2.50, 24pp), Huddersfield (£3), London (£3, 40pp), Oldham (£3, 24pp), St Helens (£3), Salford (£3), Sheffield (£3, 40pp), Swinton (£3), Toulouse (n/k), Whitehaven (£2.50), York (£3, 26pp)

Still in print (monthly magazine): Hull (The 18th Man, £1), Hunslet (South of the River)

Still in print (local newspaper insert): Bradford, Halifax, Wakefield

Digital only: Batley (free to download), Hull KR (register for free download), Leigh (free to download), West Wales (free to download)

No programme of any description: Featherstone, Newcastle, Widnes

To be confirmed: Castleford, Catalans, Doncaster, Keighley, Leeds, London Skolars, North Wales, Rochdale, Toronto, Warrington, Wigan, Workington

Doncaster are replacing their programme with a "matchday information sheet" (50p). Club statement extract:

In line with a host of Betfred Super League clubs and the supporters board, the Dons will now produce a double sided A4 information sheet which will include Richard Horneís thoughts on the game, four key players from the opposition and a full squad list from both sides. On sale for 50p, the first issue of the all-new matchday information sheet will be on sale around the ground and inside the stadium.

I can confirm that the programme GrundyHiller produces for Leigh is fantastic & i am yet to find better (football included). The features that are included in the publication are varied and interesting. The history section is fantasitic and beautifully written.
I find it a shame that the work & time commitment GH puts into producing his high quality programme that it is not more widely recognised and applauded.Because that is the least it deserves. Download it for yourself and you will understand what i mean.

Rhinos have tweeted about this season's "new look" first issue of Blue & Amber, available at this evening's game against Wakefield. Leeds say: Issue 1 includes an exclusive chat with Trent Merrin, Brett Ferres and Ben Jones-Bishop plus the return of the centre spread poster featuring Adam Cuthbertson.

Rochdale have confirmed they won't this season be producing any printed programmes/magazines (or, it seems, any digital replacement material). Hornets blame "publishing costs".

Keighley issued an excellent printed 56-pager (£3) for this afternoon's (3/3) League One clash with Coventry. Plenty of reading and good photography. Best 'proper' programme I've seen so far this season. Sold from the club shop (at the Royd Ings Avenue end of Cougar Park's main stand), where free teamsheets are also available.

North Wales tweeted the cover of their printed programme for today's game with Oldham. Cover price is £2 (pagination not known).

Ian Golden says West Wales are issuing a printed programme. Check the club's Twitter feed, and you'll see they did so for the recent (23/2) London Skolars game. Issue two, price £2.

I was at last nights Catalans v Salford game and it appears that they are not issuing this season. I did look everywhere and didn't see anything. There may be some kind of supplement in a local paper as some (papers) where available at the entrance to one of the corporate suites but that is just a guess.

Thatto produced what apparently was their first Online Digital programme on Sat 9th March for the Coral RL Challenge Cup 3rd Round game v Rochdale Mayfield . The big difference however is that the club are also doing a limited run ( 20 copies per game I was told ) of "real" physical paper programmes for those early enough to get one. Price is £2 and I was told that this format was set for the 2019 season from now on . Admission remains at £2.50 / £1.50 Concessions and free team sheets were available pre match from upstairs in the club house bar area.

In similar vein, Hunslet Warriors tweeted a link to a 30-page digital programme produced for their 23/2 fixture with NCL Division Three rivals Batley Boys. No indication whether a print version is available. Given the standard size at this length is either 28 or 32 pages, I suspect not.

I saw a printed copy of Hunslet Warriors "Official Online Matchday Programme" when I called in there clubhouse last Saturday at halftime in the Football at Hunslet Club It consisted of two double sided sheets folded in the middle and stapled to make eight pages. Not sure whether it had been downloaded and printed or a small run of the prints had been made available.

Glasson Rangers (Cumberland League) are issuing this season. Unfortunately they have been left at work by the bloke who produces them for tonight's game against Kells "A".

CLOCK FACE MINERS - NCL Div 2 :
Despite having issued this season up to May , NCL Div 2 side Clock Face Miners appear to have now stopped issuing match day programmes although they are officially giving excuses along the lines of " the person who does them is on holiday " or " he's not turned up with them today " . Last issue seems to have been v East Leeds on May 4th . Bottom line is if you need a programme to enjoy going to a game then give Clock Face Miners a miss ......... pity because their's was one of the better NCL programmes.

There was a special 2 pound programme for the Bradford V Sheffield game, to celebrate the fact that Bradford had such a high profile game against their Wembley winning opposition. Apparently they're moving house soon too. Wink
