Can't really answer that John, not least because I'd only be guessing about which team he was best known for playing for. Have another question.

And while I think on, following my response to an earlier question, I have now seen a reference saying that this chap was indeed born in England.

Summary time:

A deceased English footballer with a surname beginning with either W or X who never played a full international for his country.

Mainly associated with more than one non-league club inside the M25, based both north and south of the Thames, but debatable which of them he was best known for.

Known for a particular match that took place before 1900 and which wasn't an FA Cup match.

Specifically known for something relating to that match that probably wasn't a first but led to something unusual, possibly unique.

I cannot find a definitive answer! It could feasibly have been a cup game but it is highly unlikely to have been a league game. Hope that helps...

Just to flesh this out a bit - I have established that the two teams in the match did enter the same cup competition around this time but I've no idea if they played each other in it. In this era too, many clubs weren't in leagues and so many of their games were just friendlies.

So, although I haven't given Ropey a definitive answer to his question, hopefully there's enough info here to narrow things down a bit. However, focusing on identifying the match might not be the quickest way to find our chap. Then again, as we approach the 999th game of 20Q, I'm still not sure there's ever a 'best way' to the answers!

     Re: [paulh66] Twenty Questions #998 or

Another recap:

A deceased English footballer whose surname began with the letters Wa who never played a full international for his country and does not have his own wiki page.

Mainly associated with more than one non-league club inside the M25, based both north and south of the Thames, but debatable which of them he was best known for.

Known for a particular match that took place before 1892. The match:
- is highly unlikely to have been a league match and wasn't a Southern League match;
- could feasibly have been a cup match as the two teams did enter the same competition around this time, but it wasn't an FA Cup match;
- did not involve Nunhead, Clapham Rovers or Wanderers; and
- was not played at a school.

The team our man played for in this match no longer exists.

He is known for something relating to that match which couldn't/wouldn't have been foreseen. It probably wasn't a first and is nothing to do with a style or method of playing the game. It did, however, lead to something unusual, possibly unique, and this 'something' is not related to the laws of the game.

Thought I'd finally bored everyone into submission! Laugh. There's an aspect to this quiz which hasn't yet been uncovered that's not quite as obscure as what has been uncovered, so hang on in there chaps...

Anyway, the match was in 1890.

Yes, he played for the Casuals in the game in question that took place in 1890.

I'd say the Corinthians and the Casuals are the two best known clubs he played for, and it just so happens that each of these clubs played home games at grounds both north and south of the Thames - hence my vague response about this earlier. Incidentally, although I know the venue of the 1890 game, I don't know enough about Casuals' former home grounds to know if it was a home or away game!

Only thing of note I can find is Hugh Melmoth Walters' death after sustaining a kick in the abdomen in a match between Casuals and St. Bartholomew's Hospital. HM Walters was the brother of AM and PM Walters, both capped at full back for England.

For the years relevant for this quiz, Casuals seem to have played most home games at Wormwood Scrubs while Corinthian mainly played home games at The Oval, where Casuals also played bigger games, and Queens Club.

Thanks for the info about the grounds..... and congratulations on nabbing a GOALLLLL!!!!!

It is indeed the unfortunate Mr Walters junior, a fine prospect by all accounts but whose tragic death resulted in the decision of his two brothers - England's two full backs at the time - to immediately retire from the game.

Came across this story while browsing through the superb historical features on Epsom & Ewell's website, with all three brothers also featuring at the time in the first games played by E&E's early predecessors, Ewell FC. Indeed, Arthur and Hugh scored Ewell's goals in the first ever match at E&E's much-missed West Street ground on November 1, 1890, just weeks before Hugh's death.

Incidentally, the Casuals v St Bartholomews match was played at Wormwood Scrubs so would've been Casuals' home game.

Well played Michael, over to you.

In Rob Cavallini's excellent history, A Casual Affair, it's listed as a home game and a friendly. In total, there are 26 different home venues listed for the Casuals during their existence.

Rob's three books on Corinthian, Casuals and Corinthian-Casuals are highly recommended.
