Chesterfield and District Amateur League

Renishaw Social Club 0 Hopflower 7
Venue: Renishaw Miners Welfare

A combination of murky weather and tiredness led to the onset of CBA (couldn't be ar*ed) syndrome. A three mile journey was very welcoming.

As one sided a game as the scoreline suggests. The home team did not muster a single effort on goal

Renishaw play in red England shirts for some reason.

Back home at 15.55 and into the comfy chair. Bliss!

Hope Valley A Division
Hathersage 1-1 Whaley Bridge Reserves

Travel costs: Free
Adm: Free
Att: 13 h/c

No this isn't another one of those days where I cadge a lift to a game or cycle, I was given a lift to Chinley station at 13:10. Got the 1319 down to Hathersage, the conductor must have pretended I didn't exist as he made no attempt to charge me.

I was met in the rain at Hathersage station by my best mate Sam Wagner and I hadn't seen him for a few months so we walked slowly down to the Leadmill Sports Ground to see a sparse crowd and no nets up. Oh wait it was my dodgy vision as both sides were raring to go.

The Leadmill Sports Ground is 0.3 miles from the station and basically down the hill on the left going towards Grindleford, there is steep banking on the far side, fields behind the far goal and conifers behind the near goal. The near side has changing rooms that provide bench seating via duckboards and it is covered. Cover for about 10, seating with two benches on the far side probably 24.

Hathersage in their Claret started the better and took the lead on 14 when Ben Maskrey nodded home. I knew half of the Hathersage side and then realised the right winger for Whaley Bridge Res was in my tutor group and Economics class at Marple, wow its a small small world.

I'm not going in detail about the game as it was terrible, my mate left on the half hour and just before half-time the 11 arrowed in from 20 yards and yawn yawn yawn that was the best it got, 1-1 by the way. Second half the Hathersage keeper made a few decent saves but other than that it was dire to say the least.

I set off at full-time back to Hathersage station alone and I had a small 52 minute wait for the next train. I continued listening to the even worse Buxton v Stourbridge. My mate came back to get the train to work and the conductor allowed us free travel. Got in 20 minutes ago.

Mountsorrel Amateurs 1-5 Kingsway Rangers
Leicester & District League Premier Division

Att: 20ish
Admission / programme: no chance

First time I have watched local side Kingsway this season since promotion from division 1, along with hosts Mountsorrel. 'Sorrel play on the Memorial Playing Fields which is also home to Mountsorrel Castle Cricket Club. The address is given as Leicester Road but it is behind / adjacent to the leisure centre, turning onto Speedwell Drive, then left onto Kingfisher Way - into leisure centre car park.

Routine win for the visitors, two first half goal - the first a cracker of a free kick on 12 mins. 'Sorrel scored with a penalty themselves a minute after the restart but three further goals ensued a comfortable victory. The sun seemed to come out when the first goal was scored on a mild afternoon in north Leicestershire.

The clubhouse served hot and cold drinks - 50p for a coffee in a proper mug! Viewing from the clubhouse is impossible as it is facing the cricket pitch.

Anglian Combination Division One
at The Footpath, Poringland, Norfolk

Poringland Wanderers (3)5 Caister United (0)2

Admission: N/A Programme: £1 Attendance: 28

Sandwiched between my two big pre-Christmas Euro hops (last week Spain, next week Czech Republic), this short trip up the B1332 was still one I was very much looking forward to. Poringland have come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years; following years in the wilderness after Norwich United effectively left the village without a club back in the late 80's, taking over the Gothic club in Norwich where Poringland had relocated from their village playing field (where they are back at now), Wanderers have languished for much of that time in the lower divisions of the Anglian Combination. When they were promoted back into senior football last season, the club were merely looking to avoid dropping back down this season. Eight games in however and they sit at the top of the table and if today's performance is anything to go by, they'll be in the Premier next season. Big and talented and playing some football which belies their relatively lowly status in the Combination, Wanderers brushed Caister aside with ease on a rain-sodden afternoon at the Rec this afternoon. Speaking to chairman John Overton at half-time, the club are making strides to relocate to a ground of their own just behind the new community centre which John himself, after years of fundraising, helped build. Giant fetes, some top sponsorship arrangements and public fundraising are all being arranged by the club to help finance their plans which if they can pull of will give the club and village a springboard into realising their dream of Eastern League football. Poringland, a large and rapidly expanding village on the outskirts of Norwich, would certainly benefit from a higher level of football - a few weeks ago with Norwich away and on a sunny day, 200 turned up for a game. Good signs indeed - watch this space.

Civil Service Strollers 1 Berwick Rangers 2 (1-0 HT)
Active Nation Scottish Cup 2nd Round

Admission £7
Programme £1
Crowd - approx 300

I had to stay local today and with a number of options in the Scottish Cup decided on a third visit of the season to Civil Service. I watched them deservedly beat Gala Fairydean in the previous round and they were rewarded with a plum home tie against Third Division Berwick. Having spoken to the chairman that day who told me that the club were skint I wasn't surprised to see admission prices a wee bit higher at £7 however programmes were reduced to a pound this time round. A decent crowd was out in force around the roped off pitch and proper dugouts had been drafted in for the day.

The game was a good one and the Berwick defence almost gifted the Strollers a lead in the first minute with some very slack defending which had manager Jimmy Crease furious. As a contest the game got exactly what it needed when the home side took the lead courtesy of a looping header. Prior to half time Berwick went close a number of times but without luck. Berwick introduced Fraser McLaren for the second half and he was to produce two clinical finishes which turned the game around much to the relief of the visiting fans. In the last ten minutes the Strollers tried to force a replay and they had a fantastic opportunity which was headed agonisingly wide from only yards out. Four minutes of stoppage time were largely wasted away and the league side progress.

Zamaretto Southern League South & West

Frome Town 3-1 AFC Hayes

Att.205

Admission £6
Programme £1.50 (Excellent, they had even dedicated a page to local hero Jenson Button)

Nice ground that must have had some recent work done on it after Frome's promotion last season. Ther is a large stand on one side that has both terracing and seating. Behind one goal is more cover attached to the clubhouse. The other two side is open hard standing.
Decent enough game that Frome definitely desrved to win, although at 1-1 I felt it could go either way.

Where I didn't go was Ludlow Town v Wolverhampton Casuals. Called off seemingly late Friday but I found out only at 13:30. Quick search found :
Clee Hill United 3 Newport County Borough 6
Shropshire County League (Premier Division)
Admission free. No prog,. Att 14 and a dog

Clee Hill's ground is at Knowle on the road from Clee Hill to Tenbury. Wonderful views from Clee Hill and none from the ground which is surrounded by very high hedges. The pitch slopes end to end and side to side as well as undulating but the surface was excellent. Roped on both sides. No cover.
I wasn't expecting much from a game at this level and with both teams in the bottom three. What the game lacked in footballing ability (and it lacked a great deal) it made up with goals. Neither side had a clue how to defend and besides the nine goals there were numerous misses some verging on the comical. Several bouts of handbags in the second half to add to the fun.

Zamaretto Southern League Midlands

Biggleswade Town 1 Leighton Town 0

Admission £8 inc prog (Little Les free)

Att: approx 100

A welcome win for Waders, their first in the league since August. An even first half with very few chances saw the sides go in at 0-0. The second was very entertaining and the turning point was the introduction of Jamie Steele whose first contribution was to chest down and volley in a goal that squeezed under the keeper off the wet turf. Waders then created a further three good chances and should have been out of sight before local rivals Leighton's inevitable late rally.

The game was played in a great spirit and must have been a pleasure to referee. Biggleswade deserved the points and the table looks just a bit better tonight.

No sign of the Leighton 'chavs' assume they only attend home games!

Haxey Town 1 Scotter Utd 4
TSW Printers Scunthorpe Lge Div 1

Our longest away league journey (a massive 35mins into the 'Isle of Axholme'). Haxey share the cricket club ground on the main road through the village (A161). This time however they were using the tennis club changing rooms and not the cricket pavillion as last year - local politics no doubt. The pitch is short but wide, to squeeze in between the cricket square and the kids play area.

This was the poorest Haxey team that I can remember and we ran out easy winners. Against the strong wind in the first half, we turned round three goals to the good and added a fourth soon after. Needless to say the wind had dropped! Instead of pushing on and doing the job properly we eased off and conceded late on. Still, we are now out of the bottom three so I suppose I shouldn't moan too much.Unsure

Gwent County League Div 2 : PILCS 4 Panteg 2. Att (hc) 84. Admission free; Programme £1.

A most local of derby's at the top end of the Gwent County League's second tier with less than a mile separating the two clubs. Despite their proximity, this was the first time they had ever met in a league game as recent years have seen the clubs travelling in different directions. Not many years ago I saw Panteg at home as a Welsh League club whilst PILCS earmed promotion from the GCL 3rd division last season in only their sixth season of county league football.
As mentioned by a previous poster, the acronym stands for Pontyfelin Institute for Leisure Culture and Sport and the ground is in the Pontypool suburb of New Inn (about a mile from the station) adjacent to the large PILCS club. The pitch is fully railed with no spectator cover and the clubhouse is too far away at about 100 yards but it was possible to get some shelter in front of the tall conifers down the far touchline - most welcome on this blustery rainy day. No food other than pub snacks in the clubhouse but plenty supping in the warm.
Our previous posters seemed not to have collected a programme - the effort today was a 20-page colour effort that's probably the best I've seen in this league and the editor Mr Taylor should be commended on his efforts. As with most clubs in this league, it's best to make contact before arrival if you wish to be sure of getting one.
The wind dictated the flow of the game, assisting an early Panteg free kick to give the visitors the lead but with the changeover PILCS made conditions work for them as they scored three times in the fifteen minutes after the break. Excellent strikes by each sides number 11's gave us a final scoreline of 4-2, one not enjoyed by Panteg defender David Gabbidon. Yes, brother of............who was apparently in the area to watch Panteg a couple of weeks ago.
Worth a visit, but keep a brolly handy...............!

Gornal Athletic 2 Bustleholme 1
West Midlands League Premier Division
Admission £3.50 Programme £1

A weekend away on the Welsh borders enabled me to stop en route to take in this team who's ground I have been meaning to visit for a while. After a poor start, Gornal have been on a good run, and despite going a goal down, comfortably beat the team currently in 5th place in the league, as, with better finishing, they could have scored a hat full in the second half.

The ground has a steep bank of open terracing on the entrance side, open ended behind both goals, and a coverded stand on the far side, with a low roof and two rows of seating. The programme was poor, 28 pages, of which 18 were adverts, and only 3 pages with text to read, chairman's welcome and history of both teams. I think my copy was the only one produced for the game, as although I was the first spectator in the ground, the gateman announced that I could have the "last" one, then proudly proclaimed to following spectators that they had sold out today!. I saw no one else with a copy either.

Chesterfield 5-2 Burton Albion
Hall 13 (1-0), Allott 24 (2-0), Webster 79 (2-1), Lester 81 (3-1), Talbot 89 (4-1), Harrad 90+4 (4-2), McDermott 90+5 (5-2)
Coca Cola League Two
Admission – £10 (Stewards ushered us through as Under 18’s)
Programme £2.50
Attendance – 4218

Terrible ground, it’s not hard to see why they’re moving soon. What's more it was throwing it down at the start in the uncovered away end. The food was ridiculously expensive, £1 for a pack of crisps! £1.90 for a small bottle of coke!

Chesterfield were playing with the strong wind in the first half and penned Burton into their own half for much of the half. It took 12 minutes for The Spireites to get a deserved lead as David Niven had a shot deflected into the path of defender Danny Hall who beat Artur Krysiak from close range. Drew Talbot went close for Chesterfield and it wasn’t to long before Chesterfield added a 2nd,a corner kick came in from the left and the ball wasn’t cleared very far with Mark Allott drive a shot at goal which Jacques Maghoma let through his legs on the goalline. A rare Burton attack came when Richard Walker couldn’t quite get over the ball from an Aaron Webster cross and his header flew wide. Chesterfield were in complete control of proceedings and Burton were really struggling to come to terms with the weather. Jack Lester and Talbot made further chances to score for Chesterfield but it remained 2-0 at half time and Burton were certainly the happier to see half time.

HT (2-0)

Drew Talbot went for a spectacular goal shortly after the restart but put the ball just wide of the goal. Lester struck the outside of the post with Krysiak beaten and Lester and Talbot had yet more chances to make it 3-0. Burton got back into the game though in the second half as Aaron Webster had an effort squirm through keeper Tommy Lee’s gloves but hit the post. Substitute Shaun Harrad nearly crossed perfectly for Russ Penn who threw himself towards the ball but couldn’t quite reach. Webster then missed a header from a Michael Simpson free kick. Then the goal that the second half attacking effort had warranted, John McGrath didn’t superbly to keep the ball on the edge of the area before laying the ball square for Webster who struck his shot into the bottom and gave Burton 11 minutes to salvage point. Chesterfield had other ideas though and when Krysiak got caught in no man’s land Lester rounded him and scored to undo all the good work to get back into contention. Drew Talbot finally got on the score sheet with a minute to play after missing numerous chances he put one away on the Chesterfield counter attack hitting an unstoppable shot past Krysiak. There was still goals to come though, first a Simpson cross-cum-shot took a couple of deflections as Shaun Harrad got the last touch. A minute later Donal McDermott ended proceedings beating a once again exposed Krysiak with a shot from the left.

FT (5-2)
A scoreline that reflected the game perfectly, Chesterfield were the dominant force for much of the game but a stern fight back by the Brewers looked like it could rescue a point before Chesterfield exploited the gaping holes in the defence. I'd love to know what happened to the defence today after recent good defensive performances.

Six pointer this one, and, in spite of the scoreline, not a lot between the two sides. This ended our winning run in the league and was the second defeat in a row in all competitions. Still top of the league though!

Scarborough Town 3 Kirkbymoorside 5 (Wearside League) - £2 in, £1 programme (pretty good), £1.50 lager/cider/bitter, £3 double bacon cheeseburger... nice. Att: 153 (h/c)

I saw these two teams in the corresponding fixture in August, a lovely evening it was too, nice and warm with Scarborough dissecting a disjointed Kirkby team - with Boro winning with ease and the 3-1 scoreline flattering the hosts. Fast forward to today, and it was a grimey day with the rain battering down for all but ten minutes, and the roles on the pitch were reversed.

Scarborough are a young side, play nice football, but for all the fancy patterns they seem to want to walk the ball in the net. So when Kirkby got a goal against the run of play, it seemed to not only stun the home support, but the players too. Boro restored parity midway through the half from a cross that was touched in, but that lasted about thirty seconds, as Kirkbymoorside went up the other end and scored a nice one from the ever irritating Paul Round. The kid Round is one of those gobshite types who moans at everything, but for some reason he was in his element and set up a third just before half time, after his free kick was spilled and tapped in by (I think) Alex Strickland. They made it 4-1 with a Round cross and Strickland volley, and 5-1 with Round getting a spectacular over head kick, and they missed the opportunity to make it six when they hit the post. Boro made it 2-5 with a dodgy penalty, and it was dodgy (I was about ten yards away from it behind that goal, and made it look respectable with a good goal by Mark Barber.

Enough has been written about the Pindar, it is nowhere near good enough for NCEL One or Northern League Div Two, and the lack of cover and hard standing is noticable on a day like today. There's going to have to be a fair amount of money spent to bring it even close to ready, and work needed to be started yesterday in my humble opinion, otherwise the expected championship - they will win it - will be wasted. By the way, today was the first ever home defeat for Scarborough Town in a league game. A good day out, despite the rain...

Mangotsfield United 1-2 Forest Green Rovers
FA Cup 4th Qual
£8 in £1.50 Prog £3 Badge
Att 946

Hoping for a bit of a shock here but to be honest was a poor game. Maybe not helped by a strong blustery wind. Not hard to see why both teams are struggling in their respective leagues.
FGR had a good start with a pen in the first 10 mins and then there was 70 mins of huffing and puffing. Mangotsfield were the better of the sides but never really testing the FGR keeper. FGR went 2-0 up with 10 left and that sparked 10 mins of improved football. Mangotsfield got a goal back with a couple of mins left but in truth they never looked like geting the goal to take it to a replay.
Decent friendly club. Ground has cover on all sides and one seated stand.
Bizzarely for the second consecutive game I went into the club shop for a badge and was confronted by a fellow Villa fan. Cefn Druids last night and this today

Admission £12 (£2 transfer to the stand.)/£7
Programme £2.50
Tea 70p!!! Bargain. See that price and weep Holbrook who charge £1 for tea at Step 6 and wonder why no-one buys it!)

Aggedor mentioned he was going to Church Road, a ground I'd always wanted to do, so my Dad and I went with him to share costs. The journey down the A40 was surprisingly easy and the club held a well organised car park (£1). Once inside it was off to the fantastic club shop where I bought a metal badge for £3. The stand reminded me of the stand at Eton Park, the old home of Burton, and there was a large covered terrace on the opposite side. There was large contingent of Staines supporters at the ground included one with the dreaded drum. With the wind in their favour the visitors played the better football and looked good in attack. I was surprised the home keeper wasn't wearing a cap in the bright sunshine, easpecially when he missed a cross and the ball went narrowly wide. On 29 minutes Staines took the lead. The keeper came out for a cross, I think he lost sight of it in the sun and it was an easy header for the goal. The second half didn't improve for Hayes and Yeading. Staines to their credit didn't sit back on their league and had two more good chances to score. The home team occasionally played some good football only for a terrible individual error to mess it up. Staines held on to gain a deserved win and cause a cup shock. I hope they get a decent reward for this in the next round and a chance to bank some money. I enjoyed H&Y's ground and it's nice the club don't try and fleece their fans as others do. Thanks to Aggedor for driving.

SWP Throgmorton Cup 2nd Round

Liverton United (SWP East) 4 Foxhole Stars (SWP West) 2 AET

Admission £3 inc reasonable prog

Attendance - 60 approx (20 from Foxhole who came on a full sized coach)

Very entertaining cup tie which went to extra time before the home won through, on the balance of play a fair result.

The visitors made a real day out of it arriving by coach early, drinking the home club dry and still there when I left the ground.

With my computer almost dead hopefully I can put this report on quickly before system crashes.

LFC Insurance Group Essex Olympian League Premier Division
Galleywood V Mountnessing Boca
Score: 1-1 Att: 26 h/c KO: 1430
Cost: Free (saw 3 progs)
Weather: Mild. Windy at times. Cloudy. Light drizzle for over an hour. Sun came out at end.

Ground: Fully railes. 1 side has old building which houses all facilities. To the side is a car park. Plenty of bushes & trees on 3 sides give the ground an enclosed feel. Behind 1 goal its a bit more open.

Match: Both only played 5 but it was 14th v 4th out of 14.
Galleywood didn't look a team at the bottom taking the game to the visitors. Good chance went wide on 65seconds. MB's best chance was a lovely build up with a shot going just wide on 18mins. They got more into the game. We then had a quiet spell until Galleywood had a shot which GK couldn't keep out & #10 slid in on line to score on 40mins 1-0. Most of 2nd half saw MB have more possession but barely any goalmouth action. Last 20mins got better & quite an exciting finish. Almost an equaliser on 89mins but defender on line headed away. A quick break could have finished game but GK made save when it was a 1 on 1. #8 for MB then scored a long range effort which was a beauty on 91+mins, 1-1. Despite more injury time no more chances. Not a bad game & just about a fair result with 8 chances each.

With MB now groundsharing at Brentwood I think I've now completed the Premier Division.

Not checking my report just in case system crashes.

You've certainly got a lot to learn if you think Chesterfield is a poor ground. It's a classic old fashioned league ground and will soon be replaced by a monotonous all-seater flat pack stadium, bit like Burton's (in fairness Burton is one of the better ones).....

Anyway I was at

Dalbeattie Star 3-0 Nithsdale Wanderers

South of Scotland League.

Admission £3, no programme, attendance: 34(hc)

Incessant rain all the way up made me very dubious if the game was still on but as I approached this small town I got a text from the club secretary to say all was AOK. The ground is tucked away at the end of Mill Street and is in a public park although fully enclosed within the park. A cracking metal/wooden stand provides the only cover in this fully railed venue. There is some hard standing in front of the stand too. Pies and drink were on sale in this stand up some steps to the side of it. I did not partake as I'd had my fill in the local sandwich shop who did fantastic salad rolls.

This game was 2nd v bottom and I must admit I was hoping for a goalfest. A poor first half ended 0-0 although the away team had the better chances even though Dalbeattie had dominated. 2nd half was better and Dalbeattie won comfortably including a comedy miss.

Back home for 730 including a stop in a very wet and windy Shap on the way home.

Saturday 24th October 2009 @3pm
Ryman League Division One South
Chatham Town v Chipstead 0-1
@ Maidstone Road Sports Ground
Admission:£8
Programme: £1.50 (32pp)
Crowd: 138

A dull game where both teams resorted to hopefull punts up the field and neither side could string more than 3 passes together. Thankfully there was a goal early in the 2nd half, not helped by Chathams static defending. I could see why Chipstead started the day bottom of the league but Chatham are just outside the playoffs???
28 below par player performances and the officials weren't any better. At least I caught up with John with Russ also in attendance.

Spar Mid Wales League: Llanrhaeadr YM 2-3 Bow Street; Attendance: 80(h/c); Admission: £2.50 (including 8pp programme)

Llanrhaeadr scored first and last but the Aberystwyth based visitors shaded a hard-fought game and held out in a grandstand finish. A pleasant tree-lined venue in a relatively isolated location set amidst lovely scenery, the village hall provides dressing rooms and a canteen as well as an elevated view of play. The programme was an unexpected bonus. Thoroughly enjoyable

Cefn Druids last night and this today ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can't disagree with the above, we lacked a cutting edge today, something we've struggled with all season! I assume it was Bones you bumped into the club shop (various large tatoo's upon his person!) This is the fourth time I've seen Mangotsfield in the fourth qualifying round of the FA cup and the fourth defeat, maybe one day we shall make the first round, then again maybe not!

F A Cup 4th Qualifying Round
Paulton Rovers 3 Chippenham Town 0
Admission £7 Programme (52 pages) £2

Having had to miss the visit of Newport County to Paulton a fortnight ago in the third qualifying round, this seemed an obvious choice today, when the home side continued their run of ‘giantkilling’ with a comprehensive victory over their local rivals from the division above them.
The Athletic Field, Winterfield Road is on the edge of the village of Paulton. I travelled on the hourly 178 bus service from Bristol Temple Meads station, which dropped me outside the ground. A small stand above the dressing room gives a fine elevated view of proceedings, and there is further seating on the same side. Opposite is a long very narrow covered terrace. There is a pronounced slope from end to end; the top end having an elevated covered terrace, the bottom end open terracing. The whole ground has a very cramped feeling – the perimeter wall seems far too close to the touchlines for safety to my eyes. I wouldn’t want to be a slide-tackling defender! It did mean that as spectators you are very close to the action though.
Paulton kicked up the slope in the first half, survived Chippenham’s sporadic attacks, and scored a fine goal on the half hour. In the second half the home side not only had the advantage of the slope, but also of a strengthening wind and, at times, driving rain. They scored two further goals as Chippenham lost heart.
Though the programme had 52 pages, there was little reading material, and a great many adverts.
