Friday 4th February - EISS - Sheffield Sharks 93 Worcester Wolves 84
Adm Ł5 Prog Ł2

Super win for the Sharks although it didn't come easy. Rod Middleton impressed for the Wolves leading them to a 15 point half time lead as the Sharks looked on course for a huge beating. Coach Atiba Lyons lead by example in the second half as a run of 14-2 brought the home side back into it. Ryan Patton excelled with several fine 3 pointers, guiding the Sharks to a narrow win by the end. Some atrocious refereeing (doesn't only happen in football!) saw Steve Dagostino ejected from the game, despite receiving a blow to the face. Once again, great excitement, great spirit and surely the best value ticket in town.

Another scintillating game with nothing in it all. For once the Sharks got off to a reasonable start and took a 41-35 lead into the third period. Marcus Stout excelled for the Sharks hitting several 3 pointers, whilst big Mike Tuck typified a battling performance. Riders danger man Blount posted 28 points but it was the antics of Leicester coach Rob Paternostro that stirred the game up. His Joe Pesci-style Italian-American strop seemed to reflect in the performance of his players, who preceded to elbow, trip, punch, you name it. Highlight being the sizeable Stout squaring up with the diminutive Blount. In the end Sharks held on in a nailbiter, big Tuck posting 25 points to earn the MVP. Re-match is at EISS next Friday and given the ill-tempered nature of this one, it should be interesting.

Change of venue from the usual English Institute of Sport and a change from regular game night probably affected the attendance somewhat.

Another solid performance from a rather thin-looking Sharks squad (8 only as opposed to MK's 12), shorn of the injured Marcus Stout. Playmakers Ryan Patton and Steve Dagostino were somewhat subdued so it was left to the inside duo of Mike Tuck and Paul Williams to come up with the big plays. Tuck was outstanding with 32 points and 11 rebounds whilst fellow big man Williams posted 20 points and 10 rebounds (and managed to lose a contact lens midway through the 3rd qtr!). Demarius Bolds found the target from distance on several occasions to register 27 points for MK, impressing along with Kris Clark and Stefan Gill. Sharks generally managed to keep a 10 point buffer and deservedly ran out winners (although the MK score was recorded as 84 on the night?).

News filtered through that Mersey Tigers had beaten Newcastle Eagles, leaving the title race wide open. Tigers top the league with 38 points (19 wins 5 losses), Eagles are second on 38 points (19 wins 6 losses), Sharks are third on 38 points (19 wins 7 losses).

Sharks have home games back at EISS on Friday 1 April v Worthing, Weds 6 April v Glasgow and Fri 8 April v Mersey. An interesting finale to the season awaits!

Lacklustre end of season affair, somewhat spoiled by Sharks defeat to Mersey Tigers the previous night, thus ruling them out of the title race.

Sharks completely dominated at a half empty EISS to the point where it was almost laughable. Easy twos were eschewed in favour of spectacular threes, some of which stuck as Glasgow were easily the poorest side to visit this season.

Paul Williams gave a masterclass under the basket on offence and defence and was deservedly MVP for his 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Mersey beat Newcastle 80-75 in the north east and are now champions. They visit the EISS on Friday for the final regular season game. Friday 15th sees the play-offs commence, Plymouth Raiders looking like being the Sharks quarter final opponents.

Friday 8th April
Sheffield Sharks 83 Mersey Tigers 73

Comfortable win for the Sharks over newly-crowned BBL champs Mersey Tigers, shorn of ex-Sharks Nate Reinking and Perry Lawson. A nasty fall for GB skipper Drew Sullivan saw him withdrawn from the game and sent for x-rays. Still not to detract from the Sharks, who had a storming 2nd quarter to open up a 46-28 half time lead thanks to Ryan Patton and our lasses mate's favourite basketballing hunk Steve Dagostino.

David Aliu led a one-man comeback for the Tigers, pulling the score to 76-70 but Sharks held on to close out the win. Tigers received the trophy and were most uncharitable all evening (I was sat behind their bench), bunch of moaners it struck me.

Had some great entertainment at EISS this season and can't help thinking that a bit more consistency and the Sharks would have been recipients of the title rather than the financially-troubled Tigers.

Play-offs on Friday, Sharks at home to Glasgow, who were embarrassingly poor on Wednesday. 2nd leg at Kelvin Hall on Sunday. Semi-finals are on the weekend beginning 22nd April.

Friday 15th April
Sheffield Sharks 67 Glasgow Rocks 83 (BBL Play Off Quarter Final 1st Leg)

Bit of a turn up for the books this one. Sharks crucified a shabby Glasgow outfit just a couple of weeks ago, a very different tale last night. Sterling Davis had the Rocks visibly fired up for this one, something that the Sharks would have done well to match. Dangerman EJ Harrison again excelled for the Rocks although Davis, Livas and ex Star Wars Wookie Michael Kingma all had productive games (enjoyed Kingma pointing to the scoreboard upon his exit from the game for receiving 5 fouls!). Steve Dagostino top scored in the game with 21 points but the Sharks are going to have to do something special to claw back 16 points at the Kelvin Hall on Monday night. I hope they do, I wouldn't mind seeing a play-off semi final next week!

New season starts 30th Sept. Change of personnel for the Sharks with Patton, Dagostino, Williams and Stout departing. Incoming are Justin Dobbins (ex Worcester and a beast!), BJ Jenkins (first pro contract) and GB guard Nate Reinking (veteran former Shark). Atiba Lyons remains as player coach with Mike Tuck, Olu Babalola and Adrian Anderson signing on for another year. Another slim squad for the Sharks compared to some teams who have 10+ on the roster but a very talented one.

The NBA lockout continues in the States with Lakers Ron Artest (or Metta World Peace as he likes to be known!) stating that he will be joining Cheshire Jets if it continues. Apparently insurance and the fact Artest is doing the US version of Strictly are issues but it would be interesting to say the least to see an NBA superstar playing in front of a few hundred in the BBL. He is bonkers and rich enough to try it.

Enjoyed seeing Chicago Bulls Luol Deng playing for GB in the recent Eurobasket tournament, despite our early exit. Looking forward to the BBL campaign start as a result.

Good opening day win for the Sharks...eventually. Lousy start saw them 6-20 down as the much-changed side didn't appear to be gell-ing. Coach Atiba Lyons stepped off the bench to kickstart a second quarter rally as the half closed at 30-35. Bill Cole (19 pts) excelled for the Jets but it took crucial three's from Mike Tuck and the returning Nate Reinking to eventually put the Sharks in front. The Jets managed to bring the game level again but a vital time-out with 1.30 left on the clock proved to be a masterstroke. Olu Babalola and Justin Dobbins (who had a great debut with 18 boards) netted to see the Sharks home, just. Low scoring but entertaining nonetheless. New look game night with lighting effects, Sharks legends posters, free programmes and a new dance troupe. Once the team gets to know each other, they should be challenging for BBL honours once again.

Sharks completed a four game clean sweep to storm into the semi finals of the BBL Trophy but were pushed all the way by Mersey Tigers.

Sharks started brightly and led 19-16 at the end of the 1st quarter. Mersey, who's players have only been training together for 2 weeks (a result of money troubles), showed tremendous team spirit and went in at half time as 43-39 leaders. They held on to that lead by one point at the end of the 3rd and at 66-72 with 2 minutes to play, looked to be on course for a remarkable victory.

There is a fair degree of talent in the new look Sharks line-up however and a Mike Tuck leveller sent the game into overtime at 72 all. A crucial Nate Reinking three pointer finally gave the Sharks the edge and the home side ran out 84-81 winners.

Centre Justin Dobbins registered an impressive 'double - double' of 28 points and 12 rebounds (with two almighty dunks that nearly broke the net) backed up by Tuck who posted 12 / 16.

Big credit to Mersey who pushed the Sharks all the way. Big improvement needed from Sheffield if they are to compete with the likes of next week's visitors Newcastle Eagles.

Another defeat for the Sharks, who are now 1-4 for the league campaign. Title chances virtually over already.

However, a superb exhibition of basketball from both sides (possibly the best I've seen in my short time following the sport). Both sides traded baskets throughout the game. It took until late in the 3rd quarter for a free throw to be missed and the 3 point shooting of Bradd Wierzbicki had to be seen to be believed. A dip at the beginning of the 4th proved to be the Sharks undoing as the Riders, led by GB captain Drew Sullivan, pushed the score out to 92-98 with too little time left on the clock for the home side to come back.

Game MVP was the awesome Justin Dobbins with 34 points, who has quickly become a crowd favourite for some basket-destroying dunks and his enthusiastic crowd-geeing up technique.

Riders look to be one of the teams to beat. As well as Sullivan, Rundles and Hardy look very solid aquisitions for animated coach Rob Paternostro.

As well as the rest of the BBL season, I have tickets to college basketball in the States in February, which I am really looking forward to.

Friday 24th February 2012

Sheffield Sharks 110 MK Lions 87 - Admission Ł9, Concession Ł7 8 Page A4 Programme Free

My first ever basketball match played at Sheffield Institute Of Sport. Comfy padded seats made this a pleasent evening. Even first half of the match saw the visitors leading 43-34 but Sharks really turned it on in the Third period scoring 40 Points to MK Lions 27 to lead 74-60. They saw the game out with another 36 points in the 4th period to MK Lions 27 to win the match 110-87. Whilst there were some big guys on show it was the smaller members of the teams who top scored with 5`11" Jimmy Langhurst scoring 34 for the Sharks and Stefan Gill, 5`8" top scoring for the Lions with 24. Not sure about VFM Ł9 for just 40 minutes action but an enjoyable night out nonetheless.

I was there too! I attend all the Sharks home games - here's my link to my match report http://www.ukamericansportsfans.com/the-sharks-are-just-getting-warm

The price on the day is Ł9 but if you book before Wednesday it is only Ł6. Whilst a game lasts 4 x periods of 10 mins = 40 mins, games tipping off at 7.30 aren't usually over until 9.15 - 9.30. Friday was a terrific 2nd half performance from the Sharks and I don't remember the clock stopping too often hence an unusually early finish time.

Hope you enjoyed the atmosphere 2nd half, it was one of the better nights at the EISS this season.

That's ludicrous pricing! How on earth does that attract the 'casual' fan, or someone who has short notice work patterns, for example?

Presumably nobody bothers going to games on a 'whim'? Maybe after having read a write up a day or two before in the local rag?

Well I went on a whim Mishi and I'm hooked now! Ł9 / Ł10 is the regular price for most BBL clubs and very few others offer a discount like the Sharks. I did consider going to watch Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey but at Ł16, I considered that too much and went to watch the Sharks instead.

All the clubs make quite a big thing of the 'game night experience' with music, commentators, cheerleaders and it is very family friendly (I take my 6 year old and he much prefers it to football at the moment - he will learn though!).

It is a minority sport and to be honest the BBL don't do themselves any favours when it comes to the marketing of the game. But it is exciting, the atmosphere is good and you will see some decent-quality basketball played, the majority of the players having played in the upper-eschelons of the United States College game.

If me, the missus and the little 'un go to the flicks it costs me Ł30 - Ł40 at least so Ł18 for a night at the basketball is a bargain imo!

Just bought tickets for GB v USA Olympic warm-up game in July at MEN Arena. Ł60 on front row of upper tier. Back of the tier behind the basket are still Ł45. Decent seats courtside Ł210! It's a rare chance to see the NBA superstars so I'm just about prepared to pay what I have but Ł210!!!!!

Just a heads up for more GB Olympic warm-up game tickets that are on sale. The weekend of 13/14/15 July GB mens and ladies are playing a series of games in Edinburgh and Sheffield. Tickets are on pre-sale now with 25% off. I've paid Ł18 to watch GB men v Portugal at Ponds Forge, Sheffield (booked through Motorpoint Arena website). A much cheaper opportunity to see the GB NBA trio of Luol Deng, Ben Gordon and Byron Mullins than the ŁŁŁ-fest at Manchester later that week!

Music, dancing, acrobatics and some basketball.

Noisy at times especially when the Bulls fought back in the last two quarters.

Game ended at 11.15 pm although the actual play was 4 x 12 mins

British Basketball League

My last live basketball had been watching Birmingham Bullets at the NEC back in 1999 so it was about time I went to a second!

Won't be as long until my third game (or fourth!), as I'll be at the Olympic Park for the afternoon session on 2 August.

Played at the John Sandford Sports Centre which I believe is part of the DeMontfort University complex.

An interesting experience and I don't think I've ever seen so many young kids at a sporting event. Shame they couldn't bloody well keep still!

On the other hand, the cheerleaders in what can only be described as spray-on dresses were a far more aesthetic experience!

The chants were a tad limited though, as I think they only had 2! "Let's go Riders let's go" and "Defence! Defence! Defence!"

Leicester took control midway through the first quarter and never looked like losing the game.

Overall I'd say I enjoyed the experience and will definitely give it another go. Probably at Worcester as they're a bit closer to home.

There is a new Birmingham franchise in the pipeline. They were expected to appear for the 2012-13 season but there have been rumours of financial and venue problems so it may be 2013-14 before they take their bow.

I'm off to Sheffield Sharks v Leicester Riders in the Playoff quarter final first leg this coming Friday. Worcester have got a decent team this season too. Not fancying the Sharks chances too much; brilliant in one game, average in the next. Think it will be my last game of the BBL season. GB v Portugal and GB v USA Olympic warm-ups to come in the summer though.

Thursday 19th July

GB 78 USA 118

at Manchester Arena. Adm Ł60 (1st row upper tier).

Despite the high price, a privilege to be at this one. It was eventually televised on BBC3 but was glad to there for such an historical encounter. Yes the USA will win gold in London. I got the feeling they never really got beyond about 75% and toyed with GB with an outstanding exhibition of dunking. Some monster efforts from Kevin Durant, my play of the day came from Lebron James and eventual MVP went to Deron Williams who hit 5/6 from downtown.

Whilst USA are 'something else', look out for GB in the olympics. Very capable of upsetting a few of the other sides. Big performances expected from Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Joel Freeland and GB's own NBA superstar, Luol Deng (who top-scored with 25 tonight). I'm praying for an olympic swansong for Sheffield Sharks' Nate Reinking, who will probably retire aged 38 after the tournament.

16900 in attendance, fantastic arena, but why is it Manchester city centre? 1 hour to even move out of my parking space in the car park!

Also watching the US toy with the British side. I paid Ł25 for a seat in the second row of the upper tier (at one end of the arena). Very enjoyable and brought back memories of my days as a season ticket holder for the Penn State basketball team - they spent most games losing heavily to sides a couple of steps up in talent.

Personally I found the city centre location excellent - I was on the train within fifteen minutes of the end of the game and back at my car parked in Burscough in an hour.
