Re: [MistaFozzII] Club mergers [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Interestingly enough, the town of High Wycombe had several sides in the 1880's.

2 were High Wycombe FC (also known as Wycombe Ramblers) and North Town Wanderers.

But the merger was rejected by all the clubs and Wycombe Wanderers were formed as a new club in 1887

There was for years a misconception that the club were founded in 1884 (the year North Town Wanderers were formed I assume) but actually it was 3 years later in 1887 - a fact only discovered in the mid 90's when our history book was researched

Quite Correct Rainjar, Newcastle East End played just off what we know today as The East Coast Mainline at Chillingham Road near Wallsend, originally called Stanley after Stanley Cricket Club members, wanted to play sport in Cricket off seasons, in 1892, West End had financial difficulties, East End pretty much absorbed West End and moved to the West End Ground(St James' Park), but did not officially use the name suffix United till 1895. I always thought it Ironic that a Newcastle Team(East End) would start by wearing Red and White Stripes

Not really sure if this relevant to the thread, just thought I would try to explain the circumstances behind the merger.

The use of the suffix "United" is a whole other story. Smile

So shoud Newcastle's use of the suffix be dated to 1892 or 1895?

Hinckley Town and Hinckley Athletic merged in 1997 not 1992 as the list says .

This summer Ardsley Celtic merged with junior side Tingley Athletic - the club now operating as Tingley Athletic
Barnoldswick Town, currently going great guns in the NWC are a merger of 3 clubs: Barnoldswick United '72, Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors. Can't remember the year they all joined together as one.
Eccleshill United merged with Phoenix Park during the 1980s.

The year of merger for Hinckley United has been corrected.

I overlooked your earlier post:

Barnoldswick Town was picked up later.

To keep the list manageable, I'm limiting it to mergers of senior clubs to form a club currently in the NLS or above.

I can't find a reference to the merger of Eccleshill United and Phoenix Park anywhere. There is no mention of it in the Wikipedia article on Eccleshill United.

Phoenix Park were in the NCE at the time, which is certainly in the NLS, Eccleshill moving up to the same league when they merged in the summer of 1985. The previous season Phoenix Park had been tenants at Eccleshill after losing their own ground at Thornbury (ironically right where Bradford Park Avenue were recently planning a stadium). It's a bit dodgy treating wikipedia as the 'oracle' is it not ? Just because wikipedia doesn't say they merged doesn't mean that they didn't ! We had the lane tarmacked last month but as its not on wikipedia it must surely then be my imagination Tongue

Re: [robgrillo] Club mergers [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I actually looked across the internet for a reference to the merger, not just Wikipedia. Unimpressed

As for the list of mergers, I use the Wikipedia article on the merged club concerned as the primary source (especially since the list is on a Wikipedia user's page), but where the Wikipedia article doesn't refer to the merger, I have used the post on this thread as the source.

As I now have the year, I will add Eccleshill United to the list, with your post as the reference. Smile
