Estonia Can't Post or Reply Privately

I've booked two weeks in Estonia next summer and hope to see games on the weekends of July 28th and August 4th. The first weekend we'll be in Kuressaare on Saaremaa and their ground looks central and pretty basic; they survived in the top division thanks to a play-off win over Infonet Tallinn who apparently have a ground with a capacity of 200. Sods law says they'll be away when I'm there but I'm sure something will crop up.
The second weekend should offer choices in Tallinn. From those who have seen league football there, are doubles a possibility on a Saturday? I'm also intrigued by the newly-promoted Kalev who apparently play on a large 12,000 bowl called the Keskstaadion which, if true, would make it the biggest stadium in the country. That or Levadia, providing they're on the old National Stadium, the Kadrioru, would do nicely.
Final question - are all European club games played at the Le Coq or is somewhere else permitted to stage them? Looks like they were all there this season at least...

And exactly how bad is the mosquito problem in the summer months ? Crazy

I doubt anyone will know what next season's Estonian league will look like until the day before kick off. It's one of these leagues that has problems finding enough clubs to adhere to their licensing system.

Grounds: 1149. Last New Ground: The Recreation Ground, Ilminster, Somerset. Games since 0-0: 210

I saw a Levadia game a few years ago in Europe, against Drogheda, and it was at their own ground.

From memory back then, though I didn't get to games, you will find lower division games at all sorts of different times, but grounds are equivalent to parks/private grounds, so would be like Middlesex County/Kent County, in the main.

There is a fourth division side called Jalgpallihaigla, they are the supporters side of the Estonian national side, & their main man Madis is very friendly & speaks good English, I last saw him at the Queen's Park supporters side in Glasgow in June. Go to their website & and get his email, if you need help with fixtures.

Also, if you need anything Estonian translating from webasites try contacting Nick/Captain Caveman on the Worthing supporters messageboard. He's a decent bloke too, & his parnter, living over here, is Estonian, so he should be able to translate anything football you don't understand.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks Mishi although I've got to say the standard of English (from people I encountered) spoken in Tallinn was better than any non English-speaking country I've ever been to - including the Netherlands.
Better than most I hear round here too............Tongue

That is true, as long as you're speaking to Estonians, and not old ehtnic Russian-Estonians! ;-)

English I can cope with, even if it's being spoken by a foreigner. It's that bleedin' Cockney I ain't got a scooby abaht...

On the coast or the towns & cities you'll be fine but in rural & wooded areas it's not nice & you'll need lots of bug repellent and a big hat!

Northamptonshire CCC still unbeaten this season

Games spread all over in Estonia as well. Fri/Sat/Sun can do many games on many placcy pitches at different k/o's .
The one you mentioned earlier Infonet has 3 other first teams playing at the 200 capacity stadium. More than adequate , 47 turned up at their last league home game of last season when they had all to play for !

Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end.

I was in Tallinn a few years back. I used this site http://www.jalgpall.ee/index.php to find out games - it's in Estonian but easy enough to work out. I got to several games, easily done, if you don't mind watching a low level of football, as there's quite a few grounds not too far from the centre.

I also got to a game at the Keskstaadion; a women's game at a stadium larger than the ones used by their respective clubs' men's teams. At the other end of the spectrum, I remember one of the grounds was a school playing field (Dunamo?). It was the second tier game but they'd used the ground in the top flight the year before.

I met a German groundhopper there who'd been watching games in Helsinki but had nipped over for the day. A several-hour ferry journey Crazy but the option's there.

I think the catamarans take less than two hours so Helsinki is an easy day trip from Tallinn. Just brace yourself for prices to triple for almost everything while you're there.

I once came back on a slow ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn that took almost four hours. For the Finns on board it didn't matter as their tickets included overnight accomodation before heading into Tallinn the next day as part of their booze cruise. I chose that particularly boat as it was the last one back and I prefer ferries to catamarans. On arrival in Tallinn it took me 20 minutes or so to realise we'd actually docked and I nearly got stuck on board overnight.
