Surely no need? You can start various Olympic topics in this thread, & then everyone will lose interest after a month! ;-)

Surely there must be dedicated Olympic fora that you can use?

I get the feeling that there's not a great deal of interest in the Olympics not just on this forum, but generally - despite what the media hype would have you believe

Maybe we could have a legacy section on here for the Olympics

Some thing where grand plans could be discussed before the event and the white elephant discussed afterwards

It does appear from the news that the Olympic torch will pass through my town. Hopefully in daylight as it might not make it otherwise. However despite the torch the interest is nil and I cannot see that will alter even when the event is on

I suppose it is too late to cancel or let Paris have the event.

Apparently the olympic torch relay will pass within 10 miles of 95% of the country's population. Readers will not be surprised to learn that Clacton-on-Sea is among the 5% that miss out. This is of course merely confirmation that the town is seen by the government as nothing more than a pimple on the arse of England. Unsure

Thankfully, the Olympic Torch is coming nowhere near me either. I just hope it won't interfere too much with the pre-season friendly schedules. Laugh

Just got back from a match to find four replies and thought there would be four people strongly disagreeing with my indifference/ objection to the Olympics being in London but no

Surely someone amongst our cross section of the sporting public is in favour

The torch passes 200 metres from my house but hopefully I will be at work on that day .
What I never understood was the scramble for tickets at £20 each for sports 99.99% of the British public could not care less about . It seems this country is a sheep led society whereby the media reports on something and the Great British public make it happen .
Personally I wouldnot watch the majority of the olympics if it took place in my garden let alone pay £20 plus fuel plus food plus accomodation in London.

Since no one else is going to, I will put my head above the parapet. I am looking forward to it. I will ignore many of the so-called sports as I always do, but anything that raises the profile of this country and sport is good in my book. I have tickets for basketball (yawn, but my daughter likes it), athletics and even football. I am sure they will be three good family days out. The torch relay is passing within 200 yards of my office so I will probably go and have a look at that too. It's not really my thing but it's almost certainly once in a lifetime. Then there is an evening celebration locally for the arrival of the torch which sounds like a good family evening as well.

I know there are more worthy things that we could be spending money on rather than hosting an Olympics but, frankly, it would be more sensible if I fixed the gutter on my garden shed instead of going to a football match on Saturday. You only live once.

Having said all that I don't see why we need an Olympics forum on this site.

I hope this doesn't damage my reputation as a cynicTongue.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm!

I have no idea how near to me the torch passes and in all honesty I couldn't care less.

Family and friends in London are dreading it fearing travel chaos.

Having said all that I'll probably end up watching some of it on TV

On the subject of travel chaos, the cricket league I umpire in has cancelled all fixtures on the day of the cycling road race. With all the road closures, players, umpires etc. would probably be unable to get to many of the grounds.

I'll actually be able to view said race (briefly!) without leaving my flat. Whether I'll bother is another matter.

I've just had a look at the route. It's not coming to us this time, nearest is Bracknell.
My old mate, now departed, said he remembered the torch passing through Bagshot in 1948 when he was a nipper so the occasion is memorable in that aspect.
I'm completely neutral re. the olympics as a whole. I can see the good points and I can see the bad. I'll probably watch very little of it as most of the sports are duff IMO. I think football coverage is bad enough when they talk for longer before, and half-time and after the match than the match itself lasted. The 100m in the olympics is a thousand times worse. All that hype, the cost of the seats, the hundreds of millions of people watching on tv worldwide just to see 9.5 seconds of action. I don't get it.

My nextdoor neighbour can remember as a lad going to the Rowing at the 1948 Olympics, it was held at Henley and was free to watch.

I for one love the Olympics. I still can't belive that instead of having to get up in the middle of the night to tune in to fencing from Seoul or badminton from Sydney that its happening at the end of my road. Literally at the end of my road; and there is a real sense of excitement building in the area already - especially amongst those who think that in some unspecified way they are going to be able to "cash in". I just wish I could have got my hands on more tickets. Test events for cycling, hockey and water polo, plus the real thing for boxing, football and handball are my paltry haul so far. Looking forward to a thriving black market nearer the time.

My dad was at the opening ceremony in 1948 (he just queued up at the turnstiles) and is a bit miffed that he cannot do the same again this year.

Turning to the original question, I think the 'Other Sports' section has things covered already. Enthusiasts can enthuse in that area, whilst cynics can look away and grumble in private.

Whilst I couldn't give two hoots about the torch route and wouldn't watch the Opening Ceremony if you paid me, I'm definitely looking forward to the proper events.

Got tickets for 8 football sessions (incl. two GB games and the women's final) plus one each for basketball, volleyball and handball as well as two day passes for the Paralympics.

Mind you, 3 of those sessions are in Coventry and 3 in Manchester (well, -ish) so that may be cheating a tad!

If anyone's still looking for Football Tickets for the semis and finals note the German ATR (Dertour.de) and French ATR (eventeam2012.fr) still have some for sale (possible LOCOG will release some for these events in next few weeks in addition to those currently on offer although I expect the ticketing site to fail again when the big events come back on sale =8-).
