Man Utd have already equalled Liverpool's record of 86 points set in 2009 - the highest number of points for the team finishing second in the Premier League.Wink

It's a shame the goal difference wasn't closer between Man C/U as it would have been 2 open games.

If U hadn't really gone for in the last few mins at OT and left themselves so open to counter attacks they might have only lost 1-3 - and the GD would be only 2 - real squeaky b time.

See the original post for the wink.

A clip from 1968 - can't see that happening in the modern game.

And it's worth being reminded (as mentioned in the clip) that before 1968, City's other league title was in 1937.

And looking further back, City might have first won the title in the 1900s if the team hadn't been torn apart in 1905/1906 by findings of corruption. Manchester United bought some of their best players while under suspension, which formed the backbone of United's first successful side.

The irony. Or perhaps not.

Funnily enough, City and United were also level on points going into the last game of the 1967-68 season, with City ahead on goal average. City won 4-3 at Newcastle United, while United lost 1-2 at home to Sunderland.

City were relegated the following season – as top scorers in the division...

Apparently, Alex McLeish just wants today's game out of the way so they can start to prepare for next season...."It's about getting more quality in the squad, getting a team that can get further up the table and a team that wants to win badly".

I think we've seen that McLeish's AV already do most things badly. Tongue

Erm.....what about 1988-89 when Arsenal won the title on goal difference ahead of Liverpool, both on 76 points?

Or 1964-65 when Man. Utd won the title ahead of leeds Utd, both on 61 points?

I'm sure there's more.

I think you're missing the sarcasm here in the inference that football has no history beyond the renaming of the old 1st Division.

On a similar note I had to point out to BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent that although this is the 1st Champions League Final to contain the ground's home club, it isn't unique to Europe's biggest club match with Inter, R.Madrid and Roma all appearing in European Cup Finals at their home ground.

Northwood, Threave Rovers, Arsenal, Watford, Rochdale, Rangers (the real ones, NOT qpr), queen of the south and a few others.

Despite the sarcy aspect , Arsenal did not win it on goal difference , both were on + 37.

A stand corrected. It was goals scored that won it for Arsenal that year.

Goal average would have been the tie breaker then.

And Liverpool would have been champions if it was goal average used !!

In which case I owe Cope an apology as this is the first time the English champions have been decided on goal-difference. Blush

That'll teach me for assuming he meant the top two finishing on the same amount of points. Unsure

Too many beers round the pub whilst watching the final round of games today=befuddled brain. I'm still not sober even now. I was trying to drown my sorrows after todays results confirmed that my lot would be playing in the Europa League next year rather than the Champions League. Unsure

For Spurs fans the CL final will either be brilliant (Chelsea don't win CL, and Spurs get into the CL) or disastrous (Chelsea win CL and stop Spurs getting there).

Two other points:
- If Joey Barton had gone quietly when he got his red card, would City have had enough time to score their winner?
- And I wonder if the FA should investigate Fulop's performance on Saturday?

Incompetence beyond the call of duty, I would call it (diplomatically), in assisting Arsenal to their win and CL place yesterday.

I suppose everyone stopped watching MoTD last night after the Manchester stuff.
