Apologies if this has been mentioned but this story amazed me. FIFA telling countries their national laws must be changed?

Football's world governing body, Fifa, had demanded a change in Brazilian legislation banning alcohol at football matches.

Beer sales have been illegal at football matches in Brazil since 2003.

The ban was introduced as part of measures to tackle violence among rival fans and hooliganism.

Earlier this year Fifa's General Secretary, Jerome Valcke, made it clear that the right to sell beer must be enshrined in legislation on the World Cup in the Brazilian Congress.

"Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we're going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that's something we won't negotiate," he said.

"The fact that we have the right to sell beer has to be a part of the law."

Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor.

My money is on Qatar not happening.

Might as well have awarded the thing to Malta - actually on reflection, that would be preferable on so many levels..........

I don't know if FIFA would take away a World Cup that's already been awarded. It's never happened before (Colombia was awarded the 1986 tournament, but when it realized it would not be ready to host the event, they dropped out and Mexico stepped in to help).

Alcohol issues aside, I would be more concerned with the heat in Qatar. Rather than crowd control issues, I think the Qataris would be kept busier with fans passing out due to dehydration and heat exhaustion.

It's nice that FIFA wants to try and bring the World Cup experience to as many places as possible, but common sense would tell you a June tournament on the Arabian peninsula is pretty daft. I remember WC 94 and the sweltering heat teams had to contend with in Dallas and Orlando.

I don't think it's illegal to drink alcohol in Qatar, but there's heavy restrictions on where in can be purchased and consumed. Foreign nationals need to get prior permission to be allowed to get booze. There was a big hoo-ha in the British media and a lot of panic among the barmy army when Qatar was first awarded the 2022 World Cup.

The restrictions on alcohol sales are such as to prevent the local citizens coming into contact with the stuff. There are a small numbers of hotel bars in the city selling beer and spirits, but you need to show your (foreign) passport to get in. The off-license is for ex-pats with permits only. Beer in stadiums does not fit with this
