Danmarksserien (level 4)
Ringsted v Frem Sakskøbing 2-0 (1-0) Admission DKK30 (just over £3), programme free, sausage DKK25, att. 110 (h/c).

Ringsted is an altogether unremarkable town in the middle of Sjælland, at 6.30 all but dead but many Danish towns are like that. A midtable (5th against 7th in a 14 team division) end of season game that started slowly but turned into a decent game with the home team in complete control. A free kick from the penalty arc and a goal after good approach play down the right flank was what they could muster for their efforts but it could have been a couple more against a lacklustre Frem side who tried to raise their game after the break but to little effect.

The ground is a wide oval with somewhat rundown athletic facilities, wide to the extent that I guess it would be possible to rotate the pitch 90 degrees. Even for an athletics stadium spectators are a long way from the action. A grass bank encircles everything with four steps of high terracing nestled into it on the near side. There’s no cover in the ground which no doubt would have proved popular on an evening with more or less constant drizzle. Hedges and trees enclose the ground atop the bank. Refreshments were sold from a gazebo near the entrance in one corner.

Unremarkable game, unremarkable ground, unremarkable town but not a bad way to spend the evening all the same.

West Juniors Super League Division One
Cumbernauld United v Shotts Bon Accord, 1-3, H.T. 0-0, Att c.200, Admission £5, No Programmes
at Guy's Meadow

At last things are drawing to a conclusion in this division as Shotts catch up on their outstanding fixtures. This win means they have ensured automatic promotion (along with Glenafton), so next week's Play Off beween Pollok and Renfrew can go ahead. Shotts need five points from their 3 remaining games to overhaul Glenafton for the League Flag.

Cumbernauld had been idle for a few weeks awaiting this fixture but there was no rustiness in their first half performance. They were unlucky not to be ahead in the first half hour, hitting the post on one occasion and having several other good chances. Towards half time Shotts came more into the game and made a few decent chances of their own.

However, it was Cumbernauld who took the lead early in the second half and they seemed on course for a win. But this Shotts side have a lot of fight about them and, just as they did on Monday, they came from behind to win the game. They scored three times and as Cumbernauld's discipline imploded they found themselves down to nine men.

More celebrations for Shotts at the end as their annus mirabilis continues.

Guy's Meadow is a great venue, although spectators are really restricted to two sides only. The 'Hat Trick' Bar is a full-blown pub within the ground with great wall displays of the team history. Good crowd through from Shotts.

Only downside last night was the midgie count - I don't think I've ever come across so many at a game, and that's saying something. You couldn't open your mouth without swallowing them and many of the crowd were reduced to improvised protection with scarves tied around their heads, flailing arms etc.

Another attraction of the much-touted summer football in Scotland. I was out walking in SW Scotland yesterday and I still bear the scars.

The midgies were definately the winners last night especially away from the cover of the Stand.I've heard eating marmite helps keep them away but sadly it's some years since I last had some.Reminded me of my last camping trip to Largs where I was over run by them and ended up putting the midgie filled tent in the bin and driving back south of the Border.
Not a bad game and a half decent crowd and had they kept their discipline Cumbernauld could well have got something out of the game.

Evening Times Cup Winners Cup Quarter Final
Beechwood Park

Auchinleck Talbot 1 Glenafton Athletic 1 (Talbot win 4-1 on pens)

Crowd 300 or so, midgies an awful lot more, wild dogs interrupting the game 1,

Admission £5, no programmes, no tea bar

Lovelly sunny night and a decent game too. Talbot after creating a few early chances including hitting the post eventaully took the lead in the first half but Glenafton had regularly threatened on the counter and got a deserved equaliser before half time. An even second half saw no further goals and then straight to penalties where Glenafton missed 2 and Talbot got their first four to win 4-1, not 4-2 as the SJFA site suggests.

Nice to bump into fitbadaft at the game - and if hes reading this i do have a Talbot badge for him. As with the game at Cumbernauld this one too is plagued by midgies in the second half and quite funny to watch the flailing arms all over the ground in an effort to keep them at bay. Match held up twice in the seond half as a local devil dug invaded the park to chase the ball - i should have run it over when it ran across the high street as i arrived in town pre game.

An aerosol spray and a box of matches might do the trick
