Anglesey Review 2011/12 by Dave Jones. Can't Post or Reply Privately

Thanks to Dave Jones.

There has rarely been a season like it for Anglesey football.
The town of Holyhead alone has celebrated no less than six trophies between two of its senior teams over the campaign just gone.
And success has not been limited to the towns, with silverware galore for village sides like Llannerchymedd and Glantraeth.
Pride of place has to go to HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR who landed a tremendous treble and reached the final of a national competition.
Unfairly deprived of Cymru Alliance status two seasons ago because of sweeping changes in the Welsh pyramid system, the Harbourmen found only Conwy United too good in their first campaign back in the Welsh Alliance.
This season, however, there was no mistake, Emlyn Manley Williams' side clinching the Division One title on May 5 in style with a 5-0 demolition of Llanrwst United.
Hotspur showed true character by defeating Holywell Town 3-1 in a title "decider" a week earlier, just days after having three points deducted for inadvertently fielding a suspended player.
Having earlier secured the Cookson Cup - their first major trophy in 14 years - Hotspur made it three when they saw off Holywell 3-1 in the Barritt Cup Final.
Holyhead also progressed to the FAW Trophy Final in their first season in the competition, but their hopes of becoming only the second Anglesey team to win this tournament was ended by South Walians Sully Sports.
Nonetheless, a remarkable nine months for the Harbourmen, who will return to the second-tier Huws Gray Alliance next term and with Llangefni Town's relegation now become the island's number one ranked club.
Hotspur are not the only club to do Holyhead proud this season.
In their very first campaign in Saturday football, MORAWELON delivered another fantastic treble.
Derek Thomas and Ian Hughes' side were at their very best on April 28 when they defeated Talysarn Celts 4-1 in the NWCFA Junior Cup Final at Nantporth, Bangor.
The football Morawelon produced that day was worthy of a much higher level than tier six of the pyramid.
And the San Giro heroes proved that success was no fluke by comfortably winning the Anglesey League title and then adding the BetFred Trophy to their collection.
Winning trophies has become commonplace for GLANTRAETH since they formed back in 1984 and this season proved no exception.
In their second season back in football after a self-imposed one-year break, the Bodorgan club were crowned Welsh Alliance Division Two champions and helped themselves to the double by lifting the Take Stock Van Hire League Cup for good measure.
That made it six pieces of silverware in the past two seasons for Kev O'Neill and Chris Roberts' side, who scooped four cups last term.
On top of the two pots they added to the cabinet this season, Glan also reached the NWCFA Challenge Cup Final where they lost 4-1 to Bangor City, recovering well after a bad start in which they conceded three times in the first 16 minutes.
LLANNERCHYMEDD are another team who have excelled.
Gareth Parry's men also became members of the Island Treble Club as they pocketed the Dargie, Megan and Elias Cups.
The Tyn Parc outfit also reached the Junior Cup semi-finals and performed well in the Anglesey League.
TREARDDUR BAY UNITED hit the heights again as they made it 10 trophies in four seasons under departing manager Chris Davies by capturing the Cwpan Gwynedd.
In their first season at Gwynedd League level, they just missed out on another promotion after finishing runners-up behind a very strong Penrhyndeudraeth.
Anglesey's wonder season has not just been restricted to senior football.
The island's Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 sides all won their respective competitions at the NWCFA Tournament in Porthmadog - all without conceding a goal.
And at Under-14 level, Llanfairpwll Hotshots have certainly lived up to their name.
As well as sweeping up the prizes in the Anglesey Youth and Junior League, Hotshots also lifted the NWCFA Under-14 Cup, thrashing Llanrwst United 17-0 in the final!
Of course not every island team has been celebrating in this amazing season.
Clubs like Llangefni Town, one of only two Anglesey sides ever to reach the Welsh Premier League, and Llanfairpwll both suffered relegations, but their day will come again.
Overall, it has been a wonderful campaign for Ynys Môn football.
The past has been good, the present is great and the future looks extremely promising.

Thanks for posting that DA. Dave Jones does a simply outstanding job publicising North Wales Football. Towards the end of the season the Anglesey League website started to get its act together with regular fixture news and results. If they could expand on that and include postcodes and directions for all member clubs and a reliable fixture service I'm sure many Groundhoppers would dip their toes in the league. The WPL, Welsh Alliance and Cymru Alliance leagues are all served by pretty good websites these days, the WPL one being oustanding. The Wrexham Area League one needs to be updated more (did Llanuwchllyn v Hawkesbury Villa ever get played? I tried to go to this fixture twice) and have more ground information and the Mid Wales League one is good. Overall Welsh football needs to publicise itself more as the product is generally entertaining, the people are friendly and the scenery often spectacular. And Dave Jones deserves a Knighthood, thanks Dave!

Blokes a cracker, only hope he's working on a 2012/13 version of this.
Shall repeat in full so people can appreciate his knowledge of N W Football.

THIS is a list of all the leagues and their memberships involving North Wales senior football clubs this season.
I've done my best to make these listings correct.
It may be there have been changes since this feature was compiled, we are reliant on leagues for keeping us up to date and that does not always happen unfortunately.
Please let us know if there are any errors.
This feature first appeared in the Daily Post on Friday, August 12.

LAST season's title winners Bro Goronwy stay put as they did not meet the promotion criteria for the Welsh Alliance.
Glantraeth have risen to the WAL after finishing runners-up last term. The Gwynedd League welcomes last season's Anglesey and Caernarfon League champions respectively, Trearddur Bay United and Llanllyfni.
There is an ongoing dispute over Gwynedd League membership. Holyhead Town and Penrhyndeudraeth have claimed promotion but their former leagues, Anglesey and Caernarfon respectively, have rejected their resignations.
In the meantime, Holyhead Town and Penrhyndeudraeth are suspended from football until the matter is resolved, hopefully early next week.

CLWYD LEAGUE (disbanded)
DUE to boundary changes implemented by the FAW, the Clwyd League, as we have known it since its formation in 1975, no longer exists.
All clubs residing in Flintshire are now part of the North East Wales FA (NEWFA), which in effect has split the old Clwyd League into two.
Flintshire club first teams which formerly operated in the Clwyd League will now compete the new 10-member Clwyd East League Premier Division.
Denbighshire and Conwy club first teams, which come under the North Wales Coast FA (NWCFA) banner, will now participate in the new 18-team Vale of Clwyd/Conwy League, comprising a Premier Division and Division One.
The two aforementioned leagues will operate at Level 5 of the FAW pyramid.
The Reserve Premier League, formed two seasons ago, will continue as an 11-team competition, still accommodating Flintshire/Conwy/Denbighshire sides.
The three counties will also combine to make up the nine teams in the new Clwyd Reserve Combination League.
Six new clubs originally joined the new structure - Acton Village, Abergele Colts, Old Colwyn, Rhyl Hearts, Towyn Rangers and West Shore, however Towyn Rangers have already withdrawn.

VALE OF CLWYD/CONWY LEAGUE (18 teams)

Premier Division (10): Abergele Dragons, Llansannan, Meliden, Mochdre Sports, Prestatyn Rovers, Rhos United, Rhuddlan Town, Rhyl Athletic, St Asaph, Y Glannau.

Last year's champions Trearddur Bay United go up to the Gwynedd League, while Llandegfan are taking a season out to deal with vandalism problems at their ground.
Clubs: Aberffraw, Amlwch Town Res, Bodorgan, Cemaes Bay, Holyhead Town (provisional), Llanfairpwll Res, Llannerchymedd, Llangefni Town Res, Llangoed and District, Menai Bridge Tigers, Morawelon, Pentraeth, Trearddur Bay United Res.

Thanks Dave for all the hard work you do.

Congratulations to all the Anglesey sides who have gained success this season and hopefully there will be more success from the Island next season.

Congratulations to Morawelon for an excellent first season in the Anglesey League.
But they won't be applying for the step up to the Gwynedd League(anyone know reason?)

Llanerchymedd are awaiting the Gwynedd Leagues AGM to see if they can step up from 2nd place.

I have only recently been and it's not good.
Martin 55 summed it up in a recent post=

Morawelon is an area (housing estate) of Holyhead and the ground is found between the housing estate and the sea (Penrhos Bay) not far from the ferry terminal, so as long as you have your back to the housing it’s a very nice scene in the late sunshine. Mind you it is just an unenclosed pitch, not even roped, and the lines faded fast in the late rain shower(s).

No idea where the changing facilities were as last seen the players were still walking off into the distance towards the Ferry Port, those that hadn’t driven up.

Congratulations Llannerchymedd

Llannerchymedd have been promoted to the Gwynedd League after finishing 2nd in the Anglesey League.

Morawelon are unable to go up due to facilities issues.

An excellent season for Llannerchymedd after winning 3 Cups as well as promotion.
