What are your experiences of this chain of pubs?
Seem to have a good few entries in the beer guide and decent food. Becoming a bit of a rival for Wetherspoons.

Chains of any kind usually depress me but unfortunately our
lifestyle sucks us into their arms.

Not as cheap as Wetherspoons obviously, but a couple of quid extra on the food is just about worth it for what you get as its decent grub, and the beer is at pub prices these days.

Never heard of them, are they confined to a particular part of the country?

They are scattered about a bit and seem to be confined to big cities and tourist destinations. In the north west, we have got two in central Manchester and one each in Liverpool and Chester, but there are several in London as well as one in Windsor from their website.
Although they are a chain, the pubs are more individual than Wetherspoons, and I like them. "Handwritten" beertasting notes often feature, as do one or custom beers such as Nicholson's Pale Ale from St Austell.

According to their website, they have 81 pubs of which 45 are in Central / Inner London. There is one in Cambridge, but I had no idea that it was part of this chain.

The Green Dragon in Beverley. Never realised it was a 'chain' til I saw this thread, but like LB says, worth paying a quid or 2 more for the nosh. Always enjoyed my roasted cheese and vegetable melt there Wink.

The only one that I know I've been in is the Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool.
Now that IS a lovely pub, grade I listed gentlemen's toilets and everything.

Went into 3 pubs by Liverpool Street Station yesterday, 2 turned out to be Nicolson Pubs! The Lord Aberconway and The Woodin`s Shades. Looked decent pubs, both had at least 6 real ales on tap, Food looked expensive 11.50 For Fish & Chips, think I will give that a miss. Two I went in were not that big and soon became packed.

Twas in the Shades before Christmas...always gets packed with
transient customers on a Saturday evening...

Vino don't come cheap either...was quoted 17 for a bottle
of Rioja and all got was a Gallic shrug in response to my: "You do
know there's a fvcking double dip recession on, no?"

He even had to get one of the other bar staff to open the bottle...
and no, it wasn't a screwtop...

Yes I liked The Lord Aberconway, good ales and a really good lunch. I was disappointed post match (Orient away) when I saw it was closed and had to drink in the pub across the road.

@jj wasn't that the one they filmed at night in the rain during Mission Impossible I?

@anyonewhocanbearsedtoread
My son looked at me in surprise the other week when I told him how
much of a beer desert inner London used to be up until the mid-eighties.

Few boozers, if any, opened until 11pm midweek. The Lamb in Leadenhall Market (as
seen in Harry Potter I methinks), was one.

And as for a weekend, that was a real struggle unless one knew where to look.

Of course, most were lock-ups and relied on City trade, so until
the financial revolution, they had little need.

And you do get parties of ladies going into the gents in the Philharmonic in Liverpool to admire the surroundings, although they are supposed to ask if it's okay first.

Good job it was quiet when that photographer was in. "Er, I am taking photos of the architecture."

Most scousers spell it with and 'F'....

I'd imagine having a few stock one-line answers in the can would be
advisable when taking pictures in the gents....

Not been to Liverpool for eons...last pub I went in there was known
locally as the Iron Lung...something to do with Guinness barrels I'm assuming?

Don't think I know that one, but a number of the pubs in Liverpool such as Quinns (recommended) and the Big House (not recommended) have nicknames, which they are usually known by, nothing like their official names. I am sure it's all to confuse unwary visitors.

Back on topic, the Philharmonic is fine, although it can be a bit too packed for comfort, as it was the last time I went in, after seeing Heswall in November. No photographers in the gents at least, then.

It is down the road from the Royal Oak at the bottom of Spellow Lane,
near Goodison...Walton Road I think.

I was having a play on Google maps the other day and noticed
that the Winslow Hotel is still there in Goodison Road.
A lot of the old ones must have gone now, just like here
in London...all very sad.

Bloody hell, Heswall... I used to go there as a kid..Parkgate was it
down the road? Don't think the tide ever came in
then again my marbles may be going...
