Went passed the one just south of Monmouth the other day, now no more just a pile of rumble. It was not very good except for the shop which held a large range of Maps and local papers.

Are there any good ones? Don't use them much these days but when i did it was only to use the loo. Dreadful places that were built to part people from their hard earned money.

When they first opened, people would make day trips to these places, treating them as tourist attractions.

Thank God Britain is so much more sophisticated in its tastes today...

Southwaite in Cumbria is pretty dire.

Best by a country mile, Annandale Water - there aren't many service stations with ducks and their entourage of ducklings wandering nonchalantly between tables and chair - not to mention occupying parking bays.

The recently opened private service station on the M5 south of Gloucester is not bad.

Places best avoided in my experience, I always fill up the tank before going onto the motorway................I'm surprised that the toilets are still free to use

I think it's run by the same people who run Tebay on M6 the only service station I've ever made a point of stopping at so would expect it to be pretty good.

It's only open northbound at present, the southbound side is still being built. Like Tebay it's expensive, but unlike most service stations the quality of the food makes the prices more reasonable. The sausage rolls are fantastic. The operators, Westmorland, have recently bought Cairn Lodge services on the M74 as well.

Incidentally, a couple of miles south of Tebay, they also run the Junction 38 Truckstop, which serves much of the same food as Tebay Services but at cheaper prices. I've stopped there for a breakfast a couple of times.

I often stop at Fleet on the M3 if I go to the London area, it's not bad, certainly better than Exeter on the M5 where I called in on Saturday night.

Some terrible ones I can recall from the times when I did more long distance trips - Bridgwater (M5), Keele (M6), Thurrock (M25), Tamworth (M42), Frankley (M5) and Trowell (M1)

Westmorland are customers of mine at work, and are very pleasant people to deal with. They have one or two other enterprises such as the Rheged Centre near Penrith, and are certainly expanding at the moment. The Gloucester South services are due to open just after Easter, I believe.

As you say. it's expensive, but they do try to use local produce etc.

Big thing about these places on BBC Breakfast this morning and Tebay on the M6 in Cumbria was ranked very highly with it's wonderful farm shop. Took me back to trips up to Workington in the BSN days with JAZZWASP off this forum forever buying a haggis en routeSly

On the way to Blyth on Saturday I used the M1 up to Leeds for a change, rather than the M18/Doncaster bypass route. We stopped at Woolley Edge and it was astonishingly small, cramped, outdated and filthy. And the signage to find your way back onto the motorway was appalling too...

Always loved the place mate and it's always the first stop on my trips to Scotland.Great scenery, always pristine and the duck pies are rather lovely too (I'd like to think they're not made from those that inhabit the pondWink)

The service station just north of Grantham on the east side of the A1 gets my vote. It's filthy and stinks.

Only ever use service stations for 'comfort breaks' - wouldn't dream of opening my wallet in any of them. Rip-off Britain writ large.

Hell's bells, that's a thousand posts up.

I happen to like Beaconsfield. Mainly because of the Carvery Express, which is basically a hog roast in a bread roll with a side order of mini roasties for about a fiver - top fodder!
