Top Ten UK tv comedies Can't Post or Reply Privately

Found one of those surveys (the sort that nobody from this forum was given the chance to enter, I bet!) claiming to list the top ten favourite UK tv comedies as voted for by 'the Great British public'...

http://www.msn.com/...AaeUIW&ocid=iehp

...listing the (rather predictable) top ten as:

1. Only Fools And Horses, 2.Fawlty Towers, 3. Blackadder
4. Dad's Army, 5. Morecambe & Wise, 6. Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister,
7. Two Ronnies, 8. Porridge, 9. Monty Python, 10. Steptoe & Son.

Maybe putting my head above the parapet with this, but I don't think I've ever laughed at 'Only Fools And Horses' which has to be the most overrated show that's ever appeared on the box. As for Blackadder, its only the second series that's worthy of the hype. The radio version of Steptoe & Son is funny, but some of the tv episodes verge on morose. And Yes Minister shouldn't even be in the top 50.

What I can't believe are missing from the list would include:

Rising Damp, Father Ted, Knowing Me Knowing You/I'm Alan Partridge, The Thick Of It, The Young Ones, Open All Hours, One Foot In The Grave, Rab C Nesbitt, The Fast Show, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, Not The Nine O'clock News, Goodness Gracious Me, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and Hi-De-Hi (an acquired taste that last one, maybe!)

Can anyone improve on the top ten?

So that's 14 missing from the top 10? Smile

Which sort of sums up these lists for me. If I managed to compile one of these "top tens", five minutes later I'll realise I've forgotten something that deserves to be on the list.

As for comedies, "Joking Apart" would probably/maybe be on my list. But few people have heard of that or remember it. Which is another issue with these sort of things.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Must admit I find it hard to argue with the top 10 (except the order) though I'd probably drop Steptoe and Python for One Foot in the Grave and Benny Hill.

(If the PC brigade allow me Benny, I promise not to mention Love Thy Neighbour or Mind Your Language... Tongue)

I think Only Fools, like Python, was a product of its time but don't think it's aged quite as well as the others.

If overseas comedies were allowed on this list, Cheers would be right in there!

I'd have Operation Good Guys in there somewhere. And Father Ted at number 1, always.

Father Ted, an absolute classic but i gather it didn't go down that well in the Republic with some people when first broadcast?

CBA with 10

Whatever happened to the Likely Lads
Dads Army
Father Ted
One Foot in the Grave
Red Dwarf
Twenty Twelve

And overseas comedies

Cheers
The Phil Silvers Show aka Bilko.

Best newcomer Count Arthur Strong which is part written by one of the Father Ted writers

Radio comedies I find are very good and even some from many moons ago are still very good listening, The Navy Lark (Ronnie Barker and John Pertwee are excellent in it), The Men from the Ministry (Richard Murdoch very good as "2") and some of Hancock's stuff. Of later ones I find Ed Reardon's Week very good.

The poll seems difficult to believe. All of them appear to have been shown only on the BBC and none from ITV channels or from any overseas.

Each to their own of course but I would only put about 5 of those in my top 10.

The title of the thread is Top 10 UK Comedies, which should be a bit of a giveaway.

I'd forgotten about Early Doors and Peep Show - good call sir! Still think Early Doors was vastly underrated and often better than Craig Cash's more notable work, the Royle Family.

Re: [chris41] Top Ten UK tv comedies [In reply to] Can't Post or

How many comedies that people can recall let along think are good have ITV done over the years. They have done some reasonable comedy dramas like Auf Wiedersehen but not really out and out comedies and certainly not since the 70's which were things like the Doctor series, Man about the House, George and Mildred, Robins Nest, etc plus the now rather non PC comedies. Rising Damp was probably one of their better offerings. If you look at ITV comedies the same core actors were in them Richard O'Sullivan being the prime example.

Channel Four in it's 30 odd years has probably done more good comedies than ITV has in 60 years.

No mention of 'Prime Minister's Question time'. This is actually presented as a comedy in some countries.

ITV were given the chance to take on Only Fools and turned it down saying the programme would never take off!!!

If Auf Widersehen Pet makes the list then surely MINDER must head it.....
Gavin and Stacey, by the same token deserves a mention.
Not Going Out and the Inbetweeners similarly.

As for unfunny programmes...Mrs Browns Boys...I just didn't get it....??

I was thinking Minder in the same Genre as Auf Weidesen Pet comedy drama as opposed to out and out comedy. ITV did quite a few The Biederbeck Affair was another. There was quite a good one with Peter Davison set in hospital unit on a University Campus with David Troughton. You could even put the likes of Life on Mars and New Tricks infto the same category. The latter ones of course being BBC productions.

I liked the Inbetweeners but are they taking the format to far with the films?

Father Ted is funny? Really? Ah well, each to their own. Farce is what I call it. Go on go on go on you will you will you will, is about the only time I've smiled watching that.
The original Vic and Bobs Big night out, on Channel 4 I think was very good, if not very very surreal. Wavy Davy, The Man with the Stick, The Stott Brothers etc.
Episodes which has been aired over the last few years, I guess technically not a British comedy, but with main characters being English, v v funny.
From the 70s, my top 3 would be Porridge/Dad's Army and Morecambe and Wise, still enjoy watching those now.
