Not electrification but railway related so what the hell.

I had a change of trains at Liverpool South Parkway earlier and asked the chap on the barrier if it was ok for me to nip out for a quick smoke. No need he replied as smoking is allowed m the platforms!! People were indeed smoking. How do Merseyrail get away with this?

I would imagine it's not so much officially allowed so much as not enforced, as Merseyrail may think it's not worth the grief they get for tryin to prevent smoking on any surface station.

On the other hand, I have heard of Merseyrail, unlike any other Train Operating Company, actually prosecuting people for putting their feet on the seats.

Kind of makes sense does that one, we were thinking that Merseyrail is not part of Network Rail but that still would not put them above the law with regards to the smoking ban but it seems they are just ignoring it anyway.

It wouldn't be as it's an operator (franchise holder) but the stations are managed by it.

Network Rail owns most of the nation's 2,500 stations but manages only 18, all of them in London and other major towns and cities.

The above was today cancelled for the 2nd time in 5 days. Union involvement again?

Thanks Isaac, the story got quite a bit of national coverage and we can expect these units in service in June!! Anything from today onwards then!

Slowly but surely these long awaited units are starting to appear with the first one running last Friday but another brand new one has already been seen at some depot or other in East London covered in graffiti!Frown

So the govt has scrapped plans for electrification in Wales, the Midlands and North (which route is the latter?)

Not sure if the Corby run down to Bedford will also now get scrapped on the MML but seeing as money has been spent in preparation for it i'm sure that it will.

The schemes dropped are Kettering-Nottingham-Sheffield, Cardiff-Swansea and Oxenholme-Windermere.

Given the shocking 'budget' overrun of the GW electrification, it's hardly surprising the schemes have been dropped but it appears that more of the class 8xx units will be built for the MML, thus repeating that mistake.

The MML timetable is to be redrafted. More trains south of Leicester will run non-stop to St P some will call at Kettering. Passengers from Wellingborough, Bedford and the Lutons will be served by Corby trains so will have to change at Kettering for services north of that point.

These are proposals for the new MML franchise which starts in August 2019. They are going out to 'public consultation'.

Thanks for the above info. I think they are soon to start a new line from LTN AP to the Airport so a change would be needed anyway to avoid the bus.

Not heavy rail but a people mover system (heavy rail would require a very expensive tunnel)

Thanks for that greenwood. It can be walked in 15 mins so they would hardly be building a railway line. Silly me.Blush

With alll due respect, sir, I would be amazed if anyone could walk to the airport in just 15 minutes from the station as it is up a steep hill. However, if running downhill from the airport it might be possible to do it in that time. Google Maps shows it as 21 minutes but this is probably inaccurate as it shows exiting from the west side of the station (intended only for bus passengers) and then walking along a flyover without any pavement, which is not allowed. You would need to exit from the east side of the station and even then I would expect the walking time to be closer to 30 minutes than 21, let alone 15.

Told yesterday Didcot - Oxford has gone and the bit to Newbury. Going to use bio mode trains. At least they are finally improving and enlarging Oxford Station and improving the Botley Road Bridge.

When the next bit of the East - West route is opened a report says the barriers at Bicester Village Station will be down for up to 36 minutes an hour at peak times.

Does it make any odds with Oxford when they don't open the station on a Sunday morning and trains are leaving empty.BlushBlush

Oxford station will be closed (this time intentionally!) for most of two weeks during July, covering the dates Saturday 7th July to Sunday 22nd July and again for the weekend of Sat.28th/Sun.29th July.

There will be a very limited direct service to/from London between Monday 16th and Friday 20th July, but otherwise it's a case of using Oxford Parkway to get to Marylebone.

Now it's getting serious...

https://www.football.london/...tion-oxford-14733430

...the closure of Oxford station looks like it's really going to nark any Crystal Palace fans heading for the friendly at the Kassam on Sat 21st. The info in this article doesn't help matters: apparently Selhurst Park to the Kassam is two hours by road (that may be true if the kick-off is at four o'clock in the morning and you're driving with a tail wind!), and it also says that the bus station is SIX MILES from the ground - Gawd blimey guvnor! - it's more like three miles actually, and a pleasant walk if you've a hour or so to kill).

As if getting out to Blackbird Leys wasn't enough of a slog already!

The railway line between Bristol Parkway and Newport will be closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday for further electrification work in and around the Severn Tunnel...

Abellio in on the MML with promises on current entire fleet being replaced. Not sure if this has a bearing on the Corby- LSP route or even if stock for this line has been sorted yet.

I'll miss EMT but after what has gone on with Stagecoach and Branson not a happy man they along with VT could be gone off the network for years.

Bye to Branson as the WCML franchise goes to First Trenitalia from December with the promise of bi mode trains on some routes. 7 years late after the last fiasco when First won only to have it then taken away. What difference will all this make to the travelling public? Probably none but on the day when more fare increases were announced it has a certain irony about it.

I take that back about missing EMT!! Just done a two hour trip Leicester - York and Abellio have given free WiFi to all travellers. Sly This would have cost me a fiver yesterday under the Stagecoach regime. Unimpressed

Hopefully it'll mean no more emails addressing me as "Gorgeous", no more on board announcements inviting me to use their rubbish 'Beam' service from some creepy bloke saying "aaah", and no more automated voices pretending to be the toilet talking to me while I'm having a wazz. I could go on..
