Vitriol On Social Media Can't Post or Reply Privately

Having seen some of the absolutely moronic tweets and posts on Facebook today aimed at Theresa May PM (note, I am not a Tory) coupled with other incidents such as the vitriol aimed at a committee member of Darlington FC (which has resulted in his resignation), I am beginning to wonder when does it end?

Years ago, people could debate and exchange ideas freely. Nowadays, it is a race to the bottom - death threats, churlish insults and moronic behaviour has replaced civilised discord.

By what right do these idiots have the right to post comments online hoping that somebody dies or gets cancer or post some other equally offensive comment? Are these people mentally subnormal?

Is it time that we started licencing computers, enabling people to see who is posting what online, and is it time to start either jailing trolls or demand that they get mental health counseling?

On the bright side, I suspect a lot of them would struggle to find their way to a polling booth. Or know what to do with a pencil if they got there.

And it makes me appreciative of the efforts of the Mods on this Forum.

I can't see how licencing computers is practical, what about mobile phones? The police will take action in extreme cases but realistically there is only so much that they can do. It's the downside of social media but there are so many more positives.

Twitter could be vastly improved by introducing a nominal fee (say 50p per year) for an account. It would probably deter people who set up numerous anonymous accounts to troll people, as well as giving police a direct link (via the payment system) to the account's owner if they did break any law on malicious communication.

It might also deter people from creating armies of Twitter bots.

Just not practical I'm afraid, the administration costs would be colossal apart from anything else.

Re: [MrTangerineMan] Vitriol On Social Media [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I seem to recall a case where and "online troll" was tracked down by the police after a complaint by her victim (possibly the McCanns, but I may be wrong) and was discovered to be an otherwise outwardly respectable lady in her 60s who was mortified by what she'd done - not that that is mitigation in any way.

Not all trolls are the "sub-human", thuggish, angry young man/woman type they are often assumed to be. There's something about the anonymity of sitting in front of a keyboard and screen that seems to bring out the dark side in many people, where you would never imagine one existed. Perhaps it's the opportunity to give vent to the pent-up frustrations of life (which we all have), ostensibly without any comeback. After all, in that sense it's no different to some of the things I say in my head about the stupidity of other road users. I can be, and frequently am, merciless in my bile, safe in the knowledge it can't be heard.

That said, I'm all in favour of the strongest possible punishment, pour encourage les autres...

The woman you mentioned in her 60s was tracked down by Sky TV and was so mortified what she had done that she topped herself.

One of the reasons why I register and post under my own name is to make sure I rein myself in and don't post anything out of order. I could really go off on some vitriol about certain posters/posts but knowing it would be easy enough to trace me back makes me think twice before posting if I get a little trigger happy on the keyboard.

And don't get me started on the McCanns.

I am also very restrained with what I put on social media, whether it be on facebook or twitter (@allroads1). I try to make sure I don't post anything I might regret one day.

And with regards to the McCanns, my sentiments also.

The woman who was trolling the McCanns was from Burton Overy and booked herself into a hotel room in Leicester and took an overdose after posting 400 times in an 18 month period.

Really wish that I wasn't making this post, but even the attack in Manchester was not 'off the radar' for some Twitter trolls.

A few posts on a Blackpool FC website last night were far from savoury too.

Certain people are abusing their oxygen privilege imo.

Thanks for the correction. That just brings the Mail online down to the gutter level of the sun. Not that it had far to fall of course.

I'm not linked to her & only picked up what she'd tweeted. Because someone I'm linked to had retweeted a 'quote retweet'. She seems to have many supporters though, which is a indictment of some in our society.
