RIP Test Match Special Can't Post or Reply Privately

No, the BBC hasn't announced that TMS is to end. It's just that the programme currently being broadcast with that name is an impostor. The quality has been declining for some time and has sunk to new depths with the transfer of Dan Norcross from one-day to test match duty.

Dan is as cheerful as they come, a great cricketing enthusiast who has realised a dream. Unfortunately, he's just a terrible commentator. Imagine Paul Whitehouse's Dave Nice crossed with Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge introducing a particularly cheesy game show and you get the picture. This morning, he introduced TMS like this: "Hello, hello, hello and welcome to Test Match Special!" I expected him to follow up with "Aha!"

I first heard him during a one-day match last year. I thought at first he was spoofing, that I'd tuned into a peculiar comedy show, perhaps during a break in play. But no, he was serious. He gives the impression that he's had the dictionary open before play, looking for some less frequently used words that he can drop in to impress the listeners e.g. where we would use 'deny', he will use 'repudiate', rolling the word out in an exaggerated manner.

So bad (and horribly fascinating!) was this that I recorded a few examples, with the stress where required:

...he finally drags his disconsolate and weary body away from the crease...

..the ball has ballooned in a gentle pa-ra-bola into the hands of the fielder...

I'll give you the field because that's germane...

The light's not quite so good, it's a bit cre-pus-cu-lar out there.

I think it's probably apposite that we go to an interview...

Sadly, TMS is too often an undisciplined noise, with the commentators occasionally breaking away from their often banal chats to describe a bit of cricket. Blowers got out at the right time.

I'm listening to it at the moment but it's not what it was 30 or 40 years ago. In the lunch break we had memories of TMS and one was John Arlott's Freaker. Glorious

It lives!
The prank played on Boycott on the last day of the Oval test was truly brilliant.

Priceless. It had me taken in when I heard it live. Especially with Geoffrey on the point of combusting.

Am I the only one whose arse gets a headache whenever Boycott is on. He should be pensioned off along with his arrogance.

He's good when he sticks to proper cricket analysis but there's too much of the other stuff.

It had me until Faisalabad. Then I smelt a rat.

The 60th anniversary special includes the rarely heard and much shorter sequel to 'leg over'. It starts at just after 46 minutes.

Agreed.

Like many others from the Broad Acres (Fred, Don Mosey) he has become a caricature.

Time to move on.

But totally agree too that the new whippersnappers don't have the necessary "bottom"

Will be tough keeping TMS going whilst also evolving.

Either TMS is about to get a new producer or Charles Dagnall should consult a dictionary: "Adam Mountford, our erstwhile producer..."

A new man might halt the decline.

Expanding upon the theme of the opening post....I'm no cricket expert but I can't be the only one who found BT Sports' commentary on the Ashes test absolutely awful. Don't know if they're paid by the word but they just didn't shut up! Richie Benaud must be spinning..
