Andy Reid (1962-2017) , who died last week at the age of just 55 was what could be described as an uncompromising central defender or right back. Although his career never quite reached the heights of his older brother Nicky's, he was certainly very highly regarded at Altrincham where he was nicknamed Hagar the Horrible.

After being released by Everton, and a spell at his local club, Urmston Town, he moved up the non-League pyramid, playing for Witton Albion, Southport and Runcorn, before John King signed him for Altrincham in 1989. He was a regular in the team which so nearly got promoted to the Football League in 1990-91. The following season, the club nearly got relegated, and there was a big clear out and a managerial change at the end of the season, but he moved upwards to Bury, making his League debut at the age of 30.
His Football League career lasted 15 months, before he rejoined Altrincham in 1993 when his former teammate Paul Rowlands took over as manager. He took the long throw which resulted in what was probably the club's famous disallowed goal - disallowed for a foul throw - in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane in 1995. Injuries were starting to take their toll and he left in late 1996 to join Hyde United, although he did have another spell at Altrincham as reserve team coach a couple of years later.
