New T20 competition for Minor Counties Can't Post or Reply Privately

Beginning in May, the Unicorns T20 will be split into four regional groups of five and see each county play eight games, comprising four double-headers against the same opposition on the same day.

Group 1
Cheshire, Cumberland, Lincolnshire, Northumberland, Staffordshire

06/5 Cheshire v Cumberland @ Toft CC
06/5 Northumberland v Lincolnshire @ Jesmond CC
07/5 Staffordshire v Cheshire @ Knypersley CC
27/5 Lincolnshire v Cumberland @ Scunthorpe Town CC
27/5 Northumberland v Staffordshire @ Jesmond CC
03/6 Cheshire v Northumberland @ Marple CC
03/6 Staffordshire v Lincolnshire @ Rollestone CC
17/6 Cumberland v Staffordshire @ Penrith CC
17/6 Lincolnshire v Cheshire @ Bourne CC
15/7 Cumberland v Northumberland @ Workington CC

Group 2
Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire

06/5 Berkshire v Shropshire @ Wargrave CC
06/5 Oxfordshire v Herefordshire @ Bicester & North Oxford CC
07/5 Buckinghamshire v Berkshire @ Amersham CC
07/5 Shropshire v Oxfordshire @ Shrewsbury CC
27/5 Herefordshire v Shropshire @ Colwall CC
27/5 Oxfordshire v Buckinghamshire @ Banbury CC
03/6 Berkshire v Oxfordshire @ Falkland CC, Newbury
03/6 Buckinghamshire v Herefordshire @ High Wycombe CC
17/6 Herefordshire v Berkshire @ Eastnor CC
17/6 Shropshire v Buckinghamshire @ Whitchurch

Group 3
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk

06/5 Hertfordshire v Cambridgeshire @ Bishops Stortford CC
06/5 Suffolk v Norfolk @ Woolpit CC
07/5 Bedfordshire v Hertfordshire @ Ampthill CC
07/5 Cambridgeshire v Suffolk @ Peterborough CC
27/5 Norfolk v Cambridgeshire @ Manor Park, Norwich
27/5 Suffolk v Bedfordshire @ Bury St Edmunds CC
03/6 Bedfordshire v Norfolk @ Dunstable Town CC
03/6 Hertfordshire v Suffolk @ Harpenden CC
17/6 Cambridgeshire v Bedfordshire @ March Town CC
17/6 Norfolk v Hertfordshire @ Manor Park

Group 4
Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Wales, Wiltshire

06/5 Cornwall v Devon @ Truro CC
06/5 Dorset v Wiltshire @ Bashley Rydal CC
07/5 Devon v Dorset @ Sidmouth CC
07/5 Wales v Cornwall @ Newport CC
27/5 Dorset v Wales @ The Leaze, Wimborne
27/5 Wiltshire v Devon @ South Wilts CC, Salisbury
03/6 Cornwall v Dorset @ St Austell CC
03/6 Wales v Wiltshire @ Newport CC
17/6 Devon v Wales @ North Devon CC
17/6 Wiltshire v Cornwall @ Calne CC

Start times for each game may vary. The MCCA site says 1100 and 1400 but the Bournemouth Echo says Dorset's first two matches are 1200 and 1600, the last two 1230 and 1630. It may be possible to see a match at two different grounds on the same day if there's at least an hour to get between them, like Wimborne and South Wilts on 27th May or Dunstable and Harpenden on 3rd June.

The group winners qualify for finals day at Wormsley on 26th August. The new look T20 will run alongside the Unicorns Knockout Trophy, which will become a straight elimination competition rather than played in groups.

Revised list with all the start times for the games. A three hour gap between games 1 and 2 doesn't leave much time for the players to take lunch in between, especially if games last the standard 2 hours 45 minutes as with 1st class T20 games.

17/6 Cumberland v Staffordshire @ Penrith CC (1100 & 1400)

Appears the times should be, 3 1/2 hours between games.
At Woolpit today it started 11-00 should have been 75 minutes
per innings, 10-15 minutes turnaround, then begin the next match at 14-30 after a 45 minute lunch. As the first game finished 25 minutes early, they had an extra 10 minute between matches, and then started the next one 15 minutes early at 14-15.

Wales 6-6
Wiltshire 6-2

With only the group winners going through to finals day, there's still the potential for a two way, even three way tie at the top of some of the groups. Presumably head to head would be the first tie break, the only matches between those still in contention in which one team won both games were Cheshire over Cumberland and Cambridgeshire over Norfolk. Table doesn't give any hint on how they separate teams who finish level but I guess batting and bowling averages like in the T20 Blast where they give a +/- figure with a few decimal points.

It's net run rate which separates teams who finish level on points. Found a PDF with a more detailed table on Buckinghamshire's website showing who holds the advantage on that score. Can't get the link to the PDF work on here but you should be able to find it from

The start of Shropshire v Bucks game 1 at Whitchurch has been put back to 1130 according to twitter, presumably to allow more time to clear yesterday's rain off the pitch thus scuppering my double plans with North Wales Crusaders at 1430, so will instead just be going to the rugby league.

27/5 Wiltshire v Devon @ South Wilts CC (Devon won both games)
03/6 Cornwall v Dorset @ St Austell CC (1 win each)
03/6 Wales v Wiltshire @ Newport CC (1 win each)
17/6 Devon v Wales @ North Devon CC (Devon won both games)
17/6 Wiltshire v Cornwall @ Calne CC (Cornwall won both games)

Current Standings - Played - Points - Net Run Rate:

Group 1
Cheshire 8-10 (0.54)
Staffordshire 8-10 (-0.38)
Cumberland 6-6 (0.44)
Northumberland 6-6 (-0.15)
Lincolnshire 8-4

Final Standings in these groups:

Group 2
Berkshire 8-12
Herefordshire 8-10
Buckinghamshire 8-10
Shropshire 8-8
Oxfordshire 8-0

Group 3
Norfolk 8-12
Cambridgeshire 8-10
Hertfordshire 8-8
Suffolk 8-8
Bedfordshire 8-2

Group 4:
Devon 8-12
Cornwall 8-10
Dorset 8-10
Wales 8-6
Wiltshire 8-2

Either Cumberland or Northumberland could topple Cheshire for the remaining finals day place if one team wins both games at Workington on 15th July and makes up the net run rate defecit. Looks a tall order for Northumberland, who will need to win both games convincingly, but more realistic for Cumberland with a 0.10 defecit to make up.

Not surprisingly it doesn't look as if there will be any play today at the Unicorns T20 finals judging by the latest pictures on Twitter. Didn't risk it myself having seen forecast. It would appear they have tomorrow as a reserve day as tweets suggest they will be coming back then, not me though as I'll be in Wales for the last day of the hop.
