It was looking good for England when NZ were 36-5. Arguably another let-off although the commentators did say the early batting was poor.

Stat of the day from TMS – prior to this match, in their last 11 away Tests (India 5, Aus 5, NZ 1), England's opponents have averaged 507-9 in 156 overs in their first innings.

The TMS commentators weren't impressed by the short-pitch bowling that allowed NZ to eat away at England's lead, though it matters less now.

An unusual stat: the four opening bowlers took all 20 wickets in the first two innings. That has happened only twice before, in 1902 and 1912.

You can add the first 3 England wickets to that stat too.

When you look around the county cricket circuit who is there to replace those already in the team?

Not long ago Cook, Strauss, Pietersen, Trott and Bell were burying the opposition under mountains of runs. Cook is fading fast and the others haven't been replaced.

The lack of a spinner of the quality of Graeme Swann is also telling. England had NZ six down in the middle of the afternoon and couldn't finish them off on a day in which they bowled more than 100 overs, 46 of them spin.

You don’t have to do well in County Cricket to get picked, look at James Vince! 626 first class runs last season yet goes on an Ashes Tour because ‘he’s got something’ apparantely and David Milan scored ONE century last season and also gets picked.

Dawid Malan was one of few positives from the Ashes.

Which probably says more about the rest of the team than his ability as he averages 30.95 in test cricket after 12 matches and 21 innings.

Steve Waugh averaged 25 in 41 innings in 26 matches before scoring his first century. Naturally, that was against England in 1989 when he was a member of 'the worst Australian team ever to visit these shores'. He scored 393 runs before getting out: 177*, 152*, 21*, 43, 92, 0, 14, 7*.

Oz won 4-0 and SW did OK after that.

Averaged over 42 in a struggling batting line up in the Ashes - Root (and Cook) averaged 47.
