Looks like Sutton United and Boreham Wood are in. To make way for them the number of qualifiers from the Highland and Lowland Leagues will be whittled down from 8 to 4 in a Preliminary Round.

Obvious question....WHY??
And why those two clubs??

And why remove Scottish clubs from it so the English can join in?

Obvious question....WHY?? Obvious answer. Welsh, Irish and Northern Irish clubs already in it. Why not English as well?
And why those two clubs?? Highest-placed non-promoted sides.
And why remove Scottish clubs from it so the English can join in? No Scottish clubs are being removed. There will just be an extra round.
Personally I am all for it. The entry of the non-Scots sides has been a breath of fresh air. Fans of clubs drawn against non-Scots sides love it. The more the merrier.

The 400 or so Dumbarton fans I saw in the semi at TNS were having a whale of a time. Their two goals that won the tie and the celebrations that followed were amongst my personal highlights of last season.

Well I've certainly backed the Welsh & Irish being in it
And been to a few Welsh-Scottish ties such as Bala v Alloa & TNS v QOTS and definitely away fans travelled south in huge numbers.

Not sure if English teams will enhance things or not.
I WOULD like to add a team from each of IOM, Guernsey & Jersey. They would obviously be weaker but would add fresh interest for sure.
And maybe include other neighbours - Faroes & Iceland...

I like the idea of English NL sides taking part but the two selected don't seem very suitable either geographically or in terms of potential support (Will be shocked if Boreham wood take more than 10-15 to, say, Alloa for a 4:10 ko on a Sunday). Sutton of course will have half the M25 to go round even to reach Borehamwood. To be honest I'm a bit surprised they've accepted. Might have been bnetter to cherry-pick Hartlepool and Gateshead?

I don't think either Sutton or Wood have accepted the invitation yet. Officially, at least.

Think the competition has to remain a meritocracy rather than inviting teams just on the basis of geography. At least airport links to both clubs are good.

Dates & format here :
https://spfl.co.uk/...18_19_1528461631.pdf

Preliminary Round Tue 31 July / Wed 1 Aug.
3rd & 4th of the Highland League - Fraserburgh & Inverurie Locos; 3rd & 4th of the Lowland League - BSC & East Stirlingshire.
Presumably the Prelim Draw will be made at that same meeting as the R1 draw, unless it's just assumed that each 3rd-placed automatically gets home advantage.

R1 draw will be made Tue 26 June. 8 HFL+LFL will have been whittled down to 6 for that, not to four.

Foreigners enter at R2, Sept 8th/9th weekend.

I saw that but I thought it was an invite, not confirmed, and subsequent posts implied it might change. Are they both definitely taking part?

Both entering at the second round. I hope it is a success and the competition can expand further.

Wasn't sure about 2 English clubs joining too.
But now they are, then as I half suggested previously, maybe teams from the Island states too (and not club sides but representative sides as would enter in Island Games, UEFA etc): IOM, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar. And maybe a couple of "non-British" but also neighbours of Scotland: Faroes & Iceland (they would be club sides).

The Yorkshire international team could be invited to give the competition some much needed credibility Smile

Excellent idea...so long as my Lincolnshire could enter a team too :)

Guess the Cornish may want a spot too! And perhaps the Bretons :)

Too early for that.Scotrail Club 50 will have only the permanent -20% for booked-in-advance and -10% for immediate travel. The two Scotrail Club 50 Flat Fare periods are mid Sept to mid Nov, and immediately after New Year until before Easter.

Preliminary Round :

BSC v East Stirlingshire - Sunday 29th July, 3pm.
Had been due the midweek after, with their Lowland League meeting at Falkirk on Saturday 28th; but a Little Mix concert in Falkirk Stadium on Friday 27th has caused the games' order to be swapped (the League game is now Wed 1st Aug).

Inverurie Locos v Fraserburgh - Wed 1st Aug, 8pm
