Whitehaven RLFC Survival Appeal Can't Post or Reply Privately

Worrying times for cash-strapped League One club Whitehaven, who are appealing for donations to help them see out the season. Haven have faced several similar crises during their 70-year history but 2018 'Recre' attendances are the lowest since the late 1960s, the club's darkest days.

The usual West Cumbria Rugby League financial melt down. It's either Town or Haven. Don't think Copeland BC will be bailing them out this time but the nuclear industry will.

In case Sellafield doesn't give a toss about this latest crisis, Haven are having a go at crowdfunding:

I recall, in 1986, BNFL handing Haven £60,000 (the amount sought now) to sign former British Lion Rob Ackerman from rugby union. Given Welshman Ackerman's limitations as a rugby league player (even in Division Two), not the best sixty grand the club has ever spent...

Despite their financial problems, Haven have announced an interesting partnership with Red Star Belgrade RLFC. The arrangement gives elite Serbian players an opportunity to develop in Cumbria:

Whitehaven are reported to have raised £45,000 towards a £60,000 target to see out the 2018 season.

The consortium looking to take control of the club, from 2019, will attend an evening shareholders meeting at the Recreation Ground on June 20th (it seems a "handful" of shareholders do not support the proposed takeover).

An interview with Stuart Harvey, the guy heading the Greater Manchester-based consortium, before yesterday's home game with Bradford:

A bit more about Harvey here:

Haven knocked six quid off the adult admission price yesterday, and were hoping for a 2,000 crowd. Official figure reported as 1,476 (I imagine that includes a good few hundred following Bradford).

According to a BBC Radio Cumbria tweet (26/6), the Greater Manchester-based consortium considering a takeover of Whitehaven is "no longer pursuing this option". A Haven statement issued at 3pm says the directors will meet tomorrow (27/6) to discuss the setback.

Re: [Feversham Lens] Whitehaven RLFC Survival Appeal [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

It's amazing the amount of money they have squandered on players wages. Far too obsessed with competing with Workington Town and chasing the "dream" - the rivalry between these two clubs verges on pathetic. A few years ago they were getting 3,000+ gates for a derby fixture. Now they are lucky if it is 4 figures. Rugby League in West Cumbria is dying and you have people more concerned about calling each other "Jam Eaters" than realising one of these clubs will fold for good in the next 10 years. This small petty minority who are obsessed with this rivalry will kill off one of the clubs. There is a market for top class Rugby League in West Cumbria but not Championship 1.
A merger will not work but a new club will.
It should be remembered that we have been here before with Haven in 2010 when they had to reform. So in 8 years they have got themselves in a total mess again. Supposedly their Directors have had to stump up £275,00 over the last 3 years to keep them afloat. Unbelievable - they sanctioned the wages and couldn't wait to strip players out of Workington Town last season. Spending money they didn't have.
As for the threats of not seeing the season out. They were selling season tickets to cover the rest of this season and next. Now they are offering a refund but....claiming that they may not see out the season if everyone claims a refund. Emotional blackmail.
Today they are claiming they will see out the season and have a shot a promotion. So it looks like they are going to keep spending

Sheffield Eagles are complaining they need £50,000 a season never mind £275.000!

More cost-cutting at the Recre, with player/coach Carl Forster and his No 2 Tony Stewart about to leave...

http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/...adad-80ed4444e5b3-ds

Haven's 2019 playing budget will be even smaller than this year's. A club statement says: "The drop in the playing budget will allow the club to re-structure, including investing in a new youth set-up; to build a local based squad; improve ties with the local clubs and further increase the club’s community work."
