You won't believe it (OK, you probably will, if you've read the Barrow and Whitehaven threads), Keighley had £34.23 in the bank...

You can see why they were in trouble if they think that 600 is 7% of 90,000!

The RFL puts Keighley in 'special measures' (a ban on signing players) after Cougars missed yesterday's 8pm deadline to pay outstanding wages to players and staff; the local MP gets involved:

The online version of today's Yorkshire Evening Post (I won't post the link because the ads etc make the site all but unusable) reports that Australian Matt Adamson, who played for Leeds between 2002 and 2004, wants to coach Keighley, act as football manager and be part of a takeover. If Adamson can find the "right investors" - in Australia - within 14 days he will arrange meetings with key stakeholders with a view to "rebuilding the culture at the club". I trust "rebuilding the culture at the club" encompasses paying wages, something the present owner (a bloke hiding behind the trading name Austria Holdings) allegedly hasn't done since August.

Ominously, 2018 National Conference League Premier Division champions Hunslet Club Parkside have replaced Keighley in the revived Yorkshire Cup tournament, a pipe-opener for the coming season. HCP face York in their first Yorkshire Cup fixture.

Rumour suggests a consortium is looking to take over Keighley. A statement is expected later this week.

Meanwhile, it has emerged some former Keighley players have now been paid monies owed them by the club.

Re: [Feversham Lens] Keighley RLFC - yet another club in trouble [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

The online version of the Telegraph & Argus (27/12) reports Keighley MP John Grogan is calling on the RFL to take "firm action" to secure Cougars' future. He suggests new ownership, possibly by supporters, is the only way forward. Austria Holdings (a bloke called Shane Spencer) gave up control of the club on December 11, with a Claire Auty taking a 75 per cent share. The following day Spencer faced bankruptcy proceedings at a Wakefield court. These have been adjourned to January 4. Auty is yet to make any public statement about her plans for the club, still in special measures (which means Cougars cannot sign any players). Grogan, a member of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group, says the supporters (well, those few that remain) are "deeply worried". The MP reveals two approaches to the RFL have been made by parties interested in taking over the club. Interestingly, Grogan claims Keighley RUFC are "quite happy" to groundshare with Cougars next season. I presume this means at Cougar Park because the RU club's facilities are minimal. The RFL and Spencer declined the T&A's invitation to comment.

I would guess the other way around

Cougar park has rl and football although it can work as it does at Coventry

I believe the RU has multiple teams, a small stand and a bar and difficult to see how they would benefit from being at Cougar Park. I doubt gate receipts features near the top of the RU clubs income

I doubt Cougars will ever need to play at Keighley RUFC, Mike. The Co-op owns Cougar Park but the RFL is the leaseholder. Although the RFL is very good at shooting itself in the foot, I can't imagine it would prevent Keighley playing at Cougar Park, whoever owns the club!

Not looking good, judging by the latest from the online version of the Keighley News (14/1). The club's owner, one Shane Spencer, is still saying nothing:

A takeover bid for crisis-hit Keighley has been rejected. A financial offer for the Cougar Park club from a consortium led by Mick O'Neill and Mike Smith was refused by Shane Spencer, of the club's majority shareholder Austria Holdings. Cougars have been in turmoil for the past six months since the takeover by shell company Austria Holdings, with non payment of staff and players wages, and questions over whether the club will be able to fulfil the forthcoming season's fixtures. The club remains in special measures instigated by the sport's governing body, the Rugby Football League, which embargoes the club from signing new players. O’Neill said: "For us to offer them a brass penny was hard to do, but we did so in the hope this sorry mess could be put to bed, and the club could move on." Spencer, of Austria Holdings, was unavailable for comment when contacted by the Keighley News. After last summer's takeover, a company called Austria Holdings Ltd was registered at Companies House and legal control of that company has passed to a number of individuals who do not appear to have any connection to the club.

Re: [Feversham Lens] Keighley RLFC - yet another club in trouble [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

According to the Keighley News (16/1), it looks as though the RFL is looking to force the issue. About bloody time!

The owners of Keighley Cougars have been given the next few days to reveal their plans to the Rugby Football League. If majority shareholder Austria Holdings fail to satisfy the RFL that they can take the club forward, the sport's governing body say they will "have a decision to make". Cougars remain in special measures, which were imposed last November after wages went unpaid, which embargoes the club from signing any new players. A deadline imposed to allow Keighley to draft in a squad of 17 players on trialist forms has been extended for a second time until Thursday, January 24. The RFL is set to hold a board meeting on January 23. The original 28-day deadline expired on January 8.

With a month until their Betfred League One campaign is due to begin at Whitehaven, time is running out for Keighley to field a team.
An RFL statement said: "The RFL recognises that the last few months have been a worrying and frustrating time for everyone involved with the Keighley club.
"Considerable efforts are being made to secure a positive outcome, but these are sensitive and unfortunately we are unable to share any details.
"We recognise that there is an urgent need for clarity about the club’s future."

The RFL's pressure comes after a takeover bid for Cougars was rejected last weekend. A financial offer for the club from a consortium led by Cougarmania era figures Mick O'Neill and Mike Smith, for an undisclosed fee, was refused by Austria Holdings representative Shane Spencer last weekend. O'Neill, speaking to the Keighley News from Australia, said: "For us to offer them a brass penny was hard to do, but we did so in the hope this sorry mess could be put to bed, and the club could move on. "I phoned Shane Spencer twice, he called me back at 3am Australian time. I called him over the weekend. I made the offer to him and he said 'not a chance, not a chance, not a chance' and then he put the phone down. I'm not going to mess about."

O'Neill said he would not be increasing that bid but added: "We are definitely not going away. We want to return, without a doubt, no question about it. I am waiting in the wings now for something to happen. "I'm still determined to take over Cougars. I'm not giving in. I am fighting the cause. "There will be no more bids from us to them. We offered a sum and that's it. It breaks my heart what's going on at the Cougars. It's an awful situation." Spencer, of Austria Holdings, did not wish to comment when contacted by the Keighley News. Meanwhile, Keighley Cougars Supporters' Club are scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday, January 31. It will take place at Keighley Cricket Club, Hard Ings Road, from 7.30pm.

Mick 'Cougarmania' O'Neill completes his takeover of Keighley. I trust we'll never see Shane 'Austria Holdings' Spencer anywhere near rugby league again.

Keighley are now out of special measures but start the 2019 season (likely to be a write-off) with a 12-point deduction. Admission cut by a third to a tenner.

Administration set for today and the -12 that comes with it.

The harsh reality of relegation from SL strikes again and with debts said to be around the 800k mark who will come in and save the club from a worse fate? Koukash has been mentioned in the past but is busy with plans to start up a club in Liverpool and maybe Cumbria as well unless he has bored of that idea!
