Sad news. Speedway's final farewell to London? At the time of its opening, built without a safety fence, Arena-Essex was a pioneering circuit. Went several times (though not for 20 years). Remember only too vividly how hellish the M25 on a Friday night used to be. Must be far, far worse now. Biggest crowd I saw at A-E was for a Firecracker unlimited bangers meeting. The place was heaving that day. Speedway always played second fiddle to the stock cars, it seems.
For sporting (and other) images, visit https://www.flickr.com/photos/feversham/ Ground/venue totals: Football 908; Rugby Union 265; Rugby League 215; Cricket 125; Speedway 53; Stock Cars 25; Grasstrack 15; Ice Hockey 15; Cycle Speedway 4; Greyhounds 2.

There is actually 2 speedway meetings to be raced as Lakeside are now at home to Peterborough next Saturday 8th September. It appears the reason the track is closing is because the Stock Car promotion cannot make it pay anymore and are giving up the last year on the lease, and the speedway promotion are only sub tenants and they have probably decided that it is unaffordable for them to become the primary tenant for a year as the area is marked for redevelopment at some stage.

Admission to Friday's farewell meeting is by Pay at the gate (cash and cards accepted), prices £17 Adults, £14 concessions. The club have produced a special commemorative brochure 'Farewell to the Raceway' which doubles-up as Friday's meeting programme and is £5 on entry to the stadium. Getting there and back could be a challenge. If I go by train may be stranded at Waterloo on way home with Saturday's strike due to begin at Midnight while Dartford Tunnel, which I have managed to avoid since it went cashless, was flooded today, presumably due to a leak unless they had a freak rain storm in the Thames estuary!
