1895 Cup - Rugby League Can't Post or Reply Privately

Presumably named after the year the Northern Union broke away from the RFU, this is the competition for Championship and League One clubs previously known as the Northern Rail Cup. 20 of the 25 clubs entered - no Toronto, Tolouse, London Skolars, Coventry or North Wales, though surprisingly West Wales did enter. The four first round ties took place in early May, the second round next week. This competition not mentioned in the fixture lists on BBC Sport website.

Round 1 (4th/5th May):
Hunslet 28-31 Workington Town
Newcastle Thunder 38-12 Keighley Cougars
Doncaster 70-6 West Wales Raiders
Oldham 48-12 Whitehaven

Round 2 - Sunday 2nd June (1500):
Leigh Centurions v Workington Town
Oldham v Doncaster
Dewsbury Rams v Swinton Lions
York City Knights v Newcastle Thunder
Batley Bulldogs v Rochdale Hornets

Round 2 - Wednesday 5th June (2000):
Widnes Vikings v Featherstone Rovers
Halifax v Sheffield Eagles
Barrow Raiders v Bradford Bulls

I think the RFL are considering this to be a completely new competition and no relation to the old National League Cup (Buddies/Arriva/Northern Rail). At least until next season when they bin off Summer Bash and take the 1895 final to Blackpool from Challenge Cup curtain-bringer-downer at Wembley.

The Halifax v Eagles game is at Keighley, for anyone remotely interested.

8.20am, apparently.

This competition might be short-lived. Bradford and Halifax fielded youth line-ups for their second round games. As we know, most of the non-heartlands clubs didn't bother entering. With the final scheduled to take place after (rather than as a curtain-raiser to) the Challenge Cup final, it does seem a little pointless.

Doncaster's game is at Fev on Wed 26th 7-30.

Watford FC supporter hence the name also follow Hull FC but rarely get to see either these days.

Have now visited over 800 grounds, progress in recent years has been rather slow and will continue to be as things stand.

I wonder if there is a reason why this game couldn't be played at Castle Park, home of Doncaster Knights RFU?

This apparently unloved and surely doomed new competition (in the quarters, York, making nine changes and reducing admission to a tenner, became the latest club to field a 'shadow' team) now has a sponsor - AB Sundecks. Says it all.

Quarter-Final Results
Doncaster 28-32 Sheffield @ Featherstone Rovers RLFC
Leigh 19-18 Barrow @ St Helens RLFC
Widnes 54-6 Dewsbury
York 16-17 Batley (after golden point extra time)

Semi-Final Draw
Sheffield v Batley
Leigh v Widnes

Ties to be played on July 28

Did you see Ralph Rimmer on Back Chat yesterday? Competition is far from doomed according to the CEO but he said he was aggrieved when hearing coaches having a pop at it when they were all in total favor of it at the meeting and apparently could have opted out of entry.

Since when did Ralph Rimmer's views accord with anyone in the rugby league community?

Maybe if Phil Caplan or Martyn Sadler had have been asked to give an opinion on the matter it would have been better, sadly they weren't.

You can bet on him saying Leeds should not be relegated if they finish bottom, his best m8 is Gary Hetherington.
They are saying now that Super League should be extended.
