I thought England handed Oz a huge advantage by pressing Anderson back into service too soon. He was always a risk and so it proved and yet despite widespread doubts on both sides about the Australian batting I don't think anyone expected them to be 122-8, with or without Anderson. It was at that point he was badly missed.

Some of England's tactics later in the day left a few commentators baffled.

You've basically decided who's going to win a 5-Test series based on 1 day...

Where's the Australian advantage? Their score was still below par, despite Smith's 100. Not sure they'll be talking about that final session from yesterday should England, as they should do from their current position, go onto win this Test.

No. I think you took my OP just a little too literally and seriously.

However, I will answer your question about Anderson. By playing him untested, it could be argued that England were admitting they rely on him too much.

Barring a sporting miracle even greater than that which took place at the same ground 38 years ago, today will be the day that the Ashes were lost.

Ten years ago to the day (but a Sunday) England regained them "Öon a golden evening at The Oval" (CMJ on TMS). The golden sun mocked England today.

Had a great day out at Headingley yesterday.... today driving home down the A1 listening to the cricket was painful.....

How many times have we got to the 4th innings of a test and dared to dream? Too many for my liking. It never happens, does it? Root will go early and it will all be over before lunch is what my (and anybody with a hint of realism) head is telling me. But one day a miracle will happen, and who knows, could it be today?
One good thing would be, we'll be able to put the Botham test to bed, always thought it should be the Botham, Willis (and a bit of Dilley) test anyway. Will Cricket fans be talking about the Root (and a bit of Stokes and Bairstow) test in 30/40 years time?
Not going to happen, but like many other dreamers I'll tune in at 11-00.

I was lucky enough to catch the last over at 4.15 pm on a big screen inside the new Spurs stadium. although I did have to bear in mind that I needed to be in my seat by the time the football kicked off at 4.30 pm.
It's fair to say that this was the only thing the home fans had to cheer all afternoon!

Recently, Management at my home address informed me that there was a problem with the Sky remote control. It was made aware to me that this constituted an urgent dire crisis. Using my trusty screwdriver I very rapidly eased out the button that had become stuck. Remote control back in perfect action.

However, Management were alarmed at the prospect of a recurrence and insisted on a new handset being obtained. Frown

"Ok, I'll sort it."

Of course, I knew what would happen.

I rang the contact number and explained our problem, the voice at the other end of the line sounded very helpful and concerned. They explained that our record of being with them for well over a decade and always paying on time meant that we were prime candidates for a Q box (or suchlike) which would be a fabulous improvement at little extra cost. Inevitably, I succumbed. But thought I redeemed myself to some extent, by fighting off the offer of Sky Sport at an extra £18 a month.

Some days later the Sky Man came round to deliver the new equipment including a new dish. We now have a set-up that we can operate through talking to it. Crazy

As the guy installed the new stuff I mentioned proudly how I'd had the iron will to resist the £18 Sky Sport offer. He proceeded to offer me it at £13 a month. This time I gave in.

So it was that after many years of not seeing our cricketers in live action, and being able to recognise only a handful of them, I tuned in to the last session of the recent Test Match.

Incredible. Unbelievable. Wow. Comic book stuff.

That Session alone justified the £156 pa Cool

Is it? I didn't know there was free live coverage of Test Matches.

I must admit the main attraction for me was the chance to watch the Blades live in the top division, even if their stay turns out to be short.

Basically anything that is being shown on the box can be streamed. But I'd rather give Sky £2 a day than muck about searching for a decent stream, then it buffers, and as we all know, Cricket is so slow you need the patience of a saint to watch it live, so pausing it and going straight back to it is a much better option.
I haven't got BT, so I do use the free option for Speedway (after the event), but thankfully there's a special section on the Speedway-forum so you wont find out the result accidently searching for it in the first place. I tend to find pay per view boxing can be the hardest sport to find a decent stream for, too many others doing it for a big fight.

Nearly escaped! The loss of Burns and Root last night was too much for the last innings, although the real damage was done on the first two days.

Two flawed batting line-ups but Australia's bowling unit is vastly superior, as was their overall preparation for the series.

As a Minor Counties fan I shouldn't be saying this. But why do the ECB chuck money as this 2nd rate competition, the money should be spent on encouraging Counties to produce decent batsman that mainly play the longer form of the game. Suffolk had an Essex youngster last week, and he was far superior to anything else on show and he'd never played for the 1st XI. 2nd XI cricket isn't great but it's stronger than Minor counties. By all means throw some money at it, but the little boys get far too much in my opinion. Spend it where it's needed!!!!

Agree entirely.
Smith apart, the batting from both sides was at best average.
England's summer was concentrated, however luckily, on winning the World Cup, with the result that two white ball batsmen, Roy & Buttler, played whilst totally unsuited to the longer game.
Not that there is a list of players to replace them, with the longer form of the game now being concentrated in April, May & Septrmber.
