Re: [The Moose] Where are you going - where did you go? RUGBY UNION or Reply Privately

Wilmslow 13 Carlisle 19 (HT 3-19)
North One West
Admission 5
Programme (w/a) 36pp
Attendance 80 (h/c)

With the awful weather rendering pointless any long trips to watch football, I opted for a medium-length hop for rugby union - my usual 'wet Saturday' standby. I never expect to be well entertained by the 15-a-side code and this dreary contest was a par-for-the-course kick and clap offering. To be fair, the first half was reasonable, but normal service resumed after the break, when the game petered out in a midfield attritional slog. I've said this before, but I'll say it again: how can anyone watch rugby union every week?

Carlisle (third at kick-off) had some pace and a few ideas, and deservedly led 19-3 at half-time. All the visitors' points came from their sturdy fly-half, who scored a soft 27th-minute try, converted it and added four penalties. Wilmslow, fifth in the table and largely ineffective, replied with a penalty. The hosts were much improved in the second half, however, and a strong start was rewarded with a 45th-minute penalty try. Neither side looked like scoring again until the last minute, when Wilmslow landed a penalty. An inability to pass and catch (schoolboy stuff, God knows) robbed them of the chance to mount stoppage-time pressure.

The Memorial Ground is hidden away amid the mansions (as in should be taxed) of this frightfully affluent Cheshire stockbroker belt town. It's built on a shelf above the Bollin Valley and water meadows known as The Carrs. Nice place for a pre-match riverbank stroll, despite the locals appearing happy to let their ghastly mutts crap whenever and wherever they pleased. There's a small stand (looks old, but isn't) with a few rows of bench seats on the near side and an ugly assortment of buildings adjacent containing the clubhouse and dressing rooms. Old habits die hard in rugby union: I was asked to leave the main bar because I wasn't a member. Nice. The main pitch is railed off and (unusually for this level of rah-rah) the ground has floodlights, which were switched on for the second half. There is also a second XV pitch and a training pitch. Mature trees fringe the entire site.

Wilmslow (to their great credit) do an excellent programme. Not the standard four-page insert amid a static ocean of ads one tends to find at rugby union, but an issue whose content changes completely every game. Good work!

As ever with this code, I came away reminding myself not to hurry back. At least it stayed dry. Driving back to my Huddersfield weekend stopover, the downpours didn't hit until the east side of the M60 was reached.
