Re: [Part-Timer] Where are you going - where did you go? RUGBY UNION or Reply Privately

Saturday 5th January 2013
Burnage 24 Bradford & Bingley 7 (HT 13-7)
National League Three North
Admission 5 (including unimpressive 24-page programme)
Attendance 120 (h/c)

Refreshments available - but took my own

A fourth kick-and-clap outing of the 2012-13 season and, unfortunately, this was no less dull than the previous three. Unable to get through to a couple of North East football secretaries, and lacking the motivation for a 120-mile drive for an EMCL tick at Aylestone Park, I opted to cross the Pennines and play a 'get out of jail free card' with a visit to Burnage's Varley Park and its 3G pitch. It was the first rugby game of either code I'd seen on an artificial surface - and it played, well, as if it were grass. Sadly, a pristine pitch cannot do anything for the absent core skills, abysmal decision making and shortage of broken field running that so blight the 15-a-side code.

At least the right team won. Burnage were no great shakes but didn't need to be. They took what few scoring chances they created, tackled reasonably well and, on the whole, simply sat back and waited for the visitors to drop the ball, which they did every couple of minutes. It really was astonishing that Bradford & Bingley had so much possession during the second half yet failed to register a single point.

The teams, both looking over their shoulders at National League Three North's relegation places, traded tries after a scoreless opening quarter before Burnage took a firmer grip on proceedings with a 39th-minute touchdown from a rolling maul to lead 13-7 at the break. Penalties in the 42nd and 53rd minutes pushed the hosts out to 19-7 and as the visitors' big pack ran out of steam, and their backs of ideas, Burnage added a 79th-minute try to secure a rather flattering margin of victory.

Varley Park (like Adams Park, Wycombe) is in a pleasanter setting than its dreary approach through an industrial estate would indicate. Spectator accommodation is minimal, with only the near side and far end accessible. Burnage need to think about getting some hardstanding laid: no-one took kindly to paddling about in thick mud. There's neither cover nor dug-outs but the venue is floodlit. The lights were switched on for the last 10 minutes. A fairly standard RU clubhouse (vast bar, twerps in loud blazers etc) is positioned between the car park and the 3G pitch. The site features two other rugby pitches (both grass), a five-a-side football court and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt golf course. Mature trees on three sides of Varley Park make a pleasing backdrop, though the incessant din from traffic on the adjacent M60 does not.
