Monday 2nd December or Reply Privately

....One of those evenings when it falls short of actually questioning your sanity but where a degree of rationality should have been introduced into decision making and the evening spent in a warmer environment than a mid Essex Athletics Stadium far from the pitch...

Chelmsford City 1 v 0 Hornchurch - Essex Senior Cup 4th Round
Prog 24 pages 2.00 - Admission 10.00 - Att 243

.....Coupled with the fact that both teams consisted of many who are on the periphery and those requiring 'minutes' on the pitch.

Chilly evening and en route with many of the parked vehicles already wearing a frosty overcoat and the thoughts were of a wasted journey. However, it is still very early winter and after the autumn deluges, the ground is still very soft in places. The pitch at The Stadium was very white and at times players lost their footing when turning, but it was never frozen and dangerous.

Obtaining the teams was a bit of a mission with neither team available until minutes before kick off and the Hornchurch team appearing on Twitter as a photograph of the hand written ECFA team sheet. Given the inexperience of both teams, it was not surprising that there was massive amounts of effort from both teams but possession was lost too frequently. When either team created chances during the first period they found either keeper adept at closing down/narrowing the angle to good effect. For the hosts Leroy Lita's first time half volley would have found the net if it had been a few inches either side of Joe Wright in the Hornchurch goal but was struck straight at the keeper. Hornchurch had slightly the better chances but Ronnie Winn who had located a large amount of space saw his chance disappear as Sam Howes in the Chelmsford goal bear down on him quickly and block. Howes then pulled off a flying save to push away a close range shot from Lewwis Spence. Clear that the man in black sought the warmth of his dressing room when he blew for half time literally on forty five minutes despite the fact that there had been two stoppages for injury and an accompanying substitution.

If Honchurch had had the slightly better of first half proceedings, the hosts had the better of the second period, however for all their possession they created little apart from an excellent move with a superb cross from the right from Dave Winfield an equally excellent header from Lita which was travelling powerfully under the bar until a equally excellent tip over from Wright.

For most of the second half, it looked as if it would be penalties that would decide the outcome, however we were trying to fathom why Robbie Simpson had completely missed his kick when lining up a shot just inside the area, the man in black adjudged that his feet had been taken from under him and pointed to the spot. Few complaints from the surrounding Hornchurch defenders and Lita sent his spot kick to his right and beyond Wright's dive to give the hosts the lead. Little in the way of response from the visitors apart from a free kick from Spence which travelled harmlessly wide, there was little threat to Chelmsford's passage to the ESC Quarter Final which if arranged for a convenient January Monday will be dutifully attended.

Despite timed 19.30 start (6 minutes late in true Essex Mean Time tradition), we had a 17 minute half time break presumably to allow the officials a warming Bovril infusion, we concluded virtually at 21.25. Then managed to get stuck behind the exit gate as two sets of players trudged slowly off. Ended up with departures no better off than a normal 19.45 kick off, indoors at 23.25....
