RUGBY UNION

Saturday 15 January 2011: Bedford Blues 44-14 London Welsh: British & Irish Cup; att: 2,416; Entry: 16; programme issued.

I know that Bedford often draw crowds over 3,000 and had more than 4,000 through the gates on Boxing Day. So I was kind of expecting a reasonably sized venue. In fact it is very much on the small side and even this below average crowd felt quite crammed-in...Elsewhere around the ground it is just really hard-standing behind the rail, perhaps with a bit of shallow grass banking, or a step or two in front of a bar. It all begs the question, what would be the safety limit if this were a football ground? Certainly lower than 4,000.

As you would expect at a Rugby Union ground, there were a variety of bars to choose from, with real ale (Charles Wells Eagle IPA) available at two of them.

I lived in Bedford for seven years, three of them within a punt (or should I say staggering distance) of the ground. I saw one (second) half of one game in all that time, though I did meet up with friends in the scrum hall after the match for a pint or five on several occasions. Rugby is just not my thing, I'm afraid.

At the time I was in Bedford, Sainsbury's came sniffing around. When BRUFC refused their offer, Sainsbury's chairman was most indignant, saying something like "Small sports clubs like this must understand they cannot sit on prime town centre sites while the public demands better shopping in declining town centres." A******e.

Wednesday 19th January

Rotherham Titans 29 London Welsh 13
Championship
H/T 13-13
Admission 10 programme 2.00, teamsheet 50p

Fairly entertaining game for RU with three tries in it. Stood with some LW fans who were posh taffys, didn't know such people existed!!

"Programme" was actually a magazine with no mention of todays game whatsoever, nearly took it back for a refund.

Saturday 22nd January 2011
Hullensians 11 Huddersfield YMCA 19 (HT 5-0)
Yorkshire Two
Admission: 3 (including 8pp programme)
Attendance: 100 (h/c)

My third dose of rugby union in successive Saturdays, and this open, entertaining match was easily the pick of the bunch. The outcome turned on the sin-binning - for infringing the 10m zone at a tap penalty - of a Hullensians forward shortly before the hour. During his absence, Huddersfield YMCA, the league leaders, scored two tries to transform a 0-8 deficit into a 14-8 advantage. There was no way back for the hosts, who were left to rue their stand-in goalkicker earlier missing two straightforward penalties from in front of the posts. YM, who had lost just one league fixture this season and boasted a 100 per cent away record, added a third try in the last 10 minutes after Hullensians had opened the scoring during the first quarter of the match with a well-worked touchdown in the corner. Plenty of commitment and several eyecatching handling movements made for a lively encounter, and it's not often a confirmed treiziste says that about hunt, punt and grunt!

Hullensians' first season was in 1924-25, having evolved from a team of Hull Grammar School old boys. Their ground is in Anlaby on the west side of the city. This (naturally) is one of Hull's posher districts. Take a stroll among the mock tudor mansions grouped around Anlaby Park, and you could fancy yourself in the Surrey stockbroker belt. Hullensians are secreted down a cul-de-sac (Springhead Lane) and hemmed in by residential and industrial properties. The main feature of the ground is the clubhouse, which is positioned between the 22m lines on the east side. The most modern section, and very nice inside it is too, was opened three years ago after fire destroyed the wooden original. There is hardstanding in front. Opposite is a simple 10-yard cover used as a shared dugout. The pitch is railed off on each side. At the north end, trees extend almost up to the deadball line. To the south, there is the second XV pitch. There are floodlights, though according to friendly club press officer Mike Augustus, they aren't up to much. With 2.15pm kick-offs the norm in Yorkshire Two, lights aren't really needed.

Mike also edits the programme, which is small, but beautifully formed. He's clearly a man with a sense of humour. The day's menu was described as "liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti", while spectators were advised: "If you've enjoyed yourself today, tell your friends you've been to Hullensians; if you haven't, tell them you've been to Ionians, Hull, Beverley or Driffield". Nice, also, to see the semi-colon in use - not something you can count on in football and rugby league programmes! For collectors, it is worth noting, in this part of the country, Yorkshire Two is about the lowest level issuing clubs go. Below that, said Mike, you might be lucky and acquire the odd team sheet.

Warrington Wizards 44 Carluke Tigers 18

Sunday 23 Jan 11 1.45pm ko
Rugby League Challenge Cup 1st Round
Venue: Rylands Sharks ARLFC
Status: Revisit, required for 2nd pitch and 2nd sport
Admit: 1 incl programme coffee 60p hot double sausage barm 1
Attn circa 300

18 years after I attended a match on the football pitch here, I returned to open my 2011 Rugby League season.

The rugby pitch is enclosed with high girder style fencing, but the only pitch barrier is a thin rope on both sides and at the end nearest the entrance. Behind the far goal is off limits due to site constriction. There is a proper scoreboard, but no cover. Benches are provided for the two teams.

Both teams appeared very ring rusty, Wizards could have doubled their score but for dropped passes and schoolboy placekicking. They will need a quantum leap in quality to progress in this competition.

Carluke can hold their heads high, as they begin what is only their 4th ever season, to obtain a place in the Challenge Cup is an achievement in itself (granted as Winners of the Scottish Grand Final). They also scored four decent tries , two of them after having a man sent off (for raking). Perhaps he wasn't an important member of the team.

A fine way to begin my viewing season.

Do you know whether this was a late switch of venue (Wizards site still advertises the match as at Wilderspool), or whether there is a prospect of it being a more regular venue for them?

Late change of venue due to leaking pipes at Wilderspool. Wizards are at Wilderspool for this season only, after that nothing has been decided. Anyone needing the old place is advised to go fairly soon.............................

Hoping the Wizards win in the next round and draw Leigh at Wilderspool in the Third Round for one final visit to the place, though I suspect the place is probably in a sorry state now when compared to my first visit ten years ago when it was virtually a lock out when Leigh played Wire in the Challenge Cup Quarter Final (their highest crowd of the season that day if memory serves me right).

As much as I enjoy reading this thread each week, am I the only one who thinks it is now a bit long and may have run its course? Would anyone else prefer sport-specific "I was there" threads? e.g:
'Shivering at the Ice Rink'
'Willow on Leather'
'Jolly Hockey Matches'
'Manly Fun at the Rugger Ground'
etc....

A bit like with my local paper, I sometimes at the moment have to read some of the reports more than once before I work out which sport we are talking about.

Perhaps close this thread then, & the mods could start an individual one ofr each sport mentioned, then people can add their own for other sports?

If this is done please, please differentiate betwen League & union!

I agree too, though surely we can keep both Rugby codes together? The majority of posts on here seem to be from Rugby, perhaps we could have a separate thread for that one, and maybe all other sports together? Over to everyone else to opine!

Okay, I'll lock this one in a bit - it does make sense - and I'll start a fresh one for the other sports mentioned.

Just a note to anyone who is wondering, I am no longer a moderator of this forum due to current personal circumstances and work commitments. If you need help, contact leohoenig or Steve walker. Thank You.
