Saturday 13th June 2009

Premier League Speedway.

Stoke Potters 56 - 37 Scunthorpe Scorpions.

Admission: 14 (inc free programme)

Great night of speedway stoke rather ran away with it towards the end, scunthorpe were poor to be honest though. Back again next saturday to Loomer Road for what will be my 2nd last speedway meeting of the year.

I was in Toronto last summer & also took in a game at Rogers centre. Not sure if the roof was open when you were there but the view of the CN tower looming above the stadium is stunning.
Great atmosphere, friendly folk and good food at a reasonable price. Roy 'Doc' Halladay is widely regarded as possibly the best pitcher in the AL.

No the roof was shut but the following evening i watched some of the game from up the tower as the roof was open.
Halliday was superb that game. 14 Ks and apart from one inning when the Angels put 4 up it was zeros all the way.
Did really well with pitchers over the 3 games. Halliday, Pettite, Rivera, Santana and K-Rod all pitched. Some nice big names there.
I see you have Mr Pujols as your avatar. Redbirds fan ?

No, I'm a Jays fan but that was a cool Avatar & Albert Pujols is 'Top drawer'
Nice line up of pitchers.
I've just been watching the Angels @ The Giants on MLB.TV. I try to catch a game most evenings.

I got NASN too or ESPN America as they now call it. Trouble is with that you have to watch the game they show. With MLBtv any game is live on demand or you can watch archived games. I subscribed at the start of the season and it cost about 60 for the whole season. Or you can subscribe month to month, for anyone serious about Baseball its a fantastic offer. Just wish they would sort out that 5 hour time difference then I wouldnt be up till 3 or 4am watching games Shocked

Premier League KO Cup : Hayley Stadium. Newport Wasps 40 Redcar Bears 50. Att 400 est. Adm 13.50. Prog 2. Agg 78-102

This stadium is located on the same retail park as Newport County's Spytty Park - turn left at McDonalds (instead of going in - you're better off, really) and it appears on the left at the end of Longditch Road. It's quite new, being built for the Wasps renaissance in 1997 and features one large elevated cantilever grandstamd with perhaps 1,000 seats with the bar at the top from where it's possible to view the racing. The rest of the stadium is banked hard standing with no other cover. There are no floodlights so afternoon racing it has to be. I don't know if the first leg result put off some potential spectators (52-38 about six weeks ago) but I didn't think the gate totalled much more than 400 though it is quite a sizeable arena. Spotted in attendance were this forum's SWP-Phil and the Champion Mars Bar eater, on a busman's holiday. Redcar did bring a goodly number of fans considering the journey.
A well-stocked and reasonably priced food-bar by the first bend where I indulged in curry 'n chips with a mug of tea at 3.30. Keg beers/cider available from the bar at 2.50.
The racing was competitive and though Newport stuck to it, they were never going to claw back the first leg deficit. Level after 6 heats, Redcar pulled away with former World Champion Gary Havelock reeling off four straight wins to seal the deal.
Rumour has it that Newport are in serious financial difficulty and may close within 6 weeks. It's worth doing the stadium soon if indeed that turns out to be the case.

RUGBY LEAGUE - Would have done Oxford Cavaliers home game agaInst Kent Ravens, on Kent's Facebook page said it had been switched to a ground in Gillingham and was now a Kent home game.

Result recorded as a 24-0 to Oxford.

Kent have now not played a game since 30th May when they lost 4-70 to Greenwich, last three games are recorded as 24-0 defeats.

League / Division now has five 24-0 out of a total of 21 fixtures.

Saturday 20 June
Super League
Catalans 12 Warrington 24[/]
at the Estadi Olympic de Montjuic, Barcelona

The first ever professional rugby league game in Spain and over 18,000 in attendance - apparently 12k had made the 2 hour journey from Perpignan and 2000 came over from the UK meaning that around 4000 locals had taken the plunge.

Decent game but facilities left a lot to be desired - no wonder Espanyol have moved out! Dirty seats. Ropey bacon on tough baguette for 3 euros.

Decent programme for 3 euros but not as much English content as is normal for a Catalans home game although I suppose that's understandable.

Barcelona is a great city but part of me is looking forward to going back to Perpignan next year.

I spent yesterday at a rather good cup cricket game in the third round (last 16) of the Club Cricket Conference Cup (successor to the Evening Standard competition).

The scores were Bexley 264-9 (45) Bickley Park 254 (44.2)

On paper, Bexley shouldn't have won this one - they had none of their front line bowlers playing, while Bickley Park were short of only Martin Saggers from their first choice team. That they did win it was down to superb fielding, decent bowling from their makeshift attack (their wicketkeeper Jibran Khan was pressed into an emergency bowling role, and turned out to be pretty good!), and panic from Bickley Park.

Since the favourites Bromley went out yesterday as well (beaten at East Molesey), this competition has been thrown wide open.

London and South Division now five clubs

Greenwich Played 6 Points 10
Swindon Played 6 Points 7
Southampton Played 6 Points 5
Oxford Played 5 Points 4
Guildford Played 5 Points 2

Table above I think is correct and that still includes a 24-0 for Oxford over Guildford.

Oxford have only managed to play one home game this season, through no fault of their own.

My mistake Oxford have "played" three home games, lost (Greenwich), won (Southampton) and awarded (Guildford), plus two away defeats at Swindon and Greenwich.

Attendance 75ish. No admission - donations collected into flatcap during second half.
Played on a barriered pitch on the Recreation Ground adjacent to Thorne Colliery FC and the Cricket Ground.
Moorends went 2nd in the table after this convincing win over 3rd placed Cottingham in a whole heated game.

27 June 2006
Rugby League Conference Midland Premier Division
Birmingham 70 Gloucester 6
Match abandoned in the 23rd minute of the 2nd half.
at Aston Old Edwardians RFC

Not going to count this one either as a ground or a game.
Bit of a farcical one - Birmingham 18-0 within 7 minutes then one way traffic.
It was only at the beginning of the second half I realised that Gloucester had only brought nine players!
Ref played 34 minutes in the first half then 22 in the second - by which time Gloucester were down to 8 men due to injury.
I believe that the result will stand due to passing the official 60th minute.
Probably a mistake playing a game at the same time as the British Lions RU game was being staged! Although Birmingham had a full complement of 17 players it appeared that half the Gloucester players stayed at home for the TV match.

So, as stated before, it's not going into the info below!

I was all set to spend the day decorating before the footie starts next week but at 1.00 I had not started and to be honest couldn`t be Ar*ed! So it was a last Minute decision to go to see the new Conference RL side at Guildford.
Guildford Giants 30 Greenwich Admirals 40 - Guildford play at Guildford rugby club in Godalming, if coming by car it is on the main Guildford to godalming road and is just before you come to Godalming Town football Club. The clubhouse had 2 bars both packed as the locals watched the Big screen in the Function room and 2 tellys in the Lounge bar showing the South Africa v British Lions game. This probably had an effect on the Spectators watching the Giants game which was played on the Back Pitch behind the clubhouse. I counted 7 spectators including me and my wife, who did not seem to be connected to One of the Teams. The more experienced Admirals ran up an early 16-0 lead and it looked like a Whitewash was on the cards but The Giants fought back and early in the Second Half they trailed by just 6 points but The Admirals stretched the lead to 40-20 only to see Giants hit back with Two Tries to make the scoreline respectable. Good battling performance by the Giants though the Final result was never in doubt. - Now where are those brushes Wink

Warrington 24 Hull 12
at the Halliwell Jones Stadium

Back to normal RL and a 2nd consecutive 24-12 win for the Wire. A lacklustre first half saw the home side take control in the second and further strengthen a play-off place.

On the downside, my train back to Wolverhampton was almost an hour late meaning I could only catch the last 7 minutes of Hull KR v Wigan.

An unusual weekend for me, watching two Twenty20 matches at the Oval (Sat) and Lords (Sunday.) Main point of interest was the weather. Thankfully, Saturday's thunderstorms did not show up until I had reached Bounds Green (nearest tube to my home) after the game but Sunday was a real surprise.

Sundays' forecast had been for 29 centigrade in London but temps were actually average with overcast skies and a 30 minute delay between innings due to some (relatively light) rain. But nice to see that the obnoxious city boy types who fill Lord's for 5.30pm starts were absent this time. I cannot stand these arseholes who never buy programmes or scorecards despite their immense wealth and seem to think it's just an excuse to drink champagne.

I've stopped attending these 5.30pm starts for this very reason. And you won't ever see me at a floodlit cricket match. It's just not cricket!

New ground for me, Torfaen did apparently play a couple of games here in 2003 but I missed those.
Using this ground this season as Pontypool Utd is being reseeded, but chairman says maybe a permanent switch, they'll decide at end of season.
This game played on 2nd pitch as main (railed) pitch was lined out but only had one set of posts Crazy. No programme today ,but no admission either.

Saturday 4th July - Three Rivers Brewery, Stockport

May not be sport, but it is raising club funds, a large group of us are visiting Three Rivers brewery with bands, buffet, disco after. Hoping to get the final Lions test recorded as I'm stopping at a mate's; and he has Sky. If I can find the Aussie Rules highlights show on Eurosport, that too.

Following it up with 'Looking for Eric' at the cinema on Sunday, which features a number of FC-ers.
