Not a mistake but Clive Tyldesley during tonight's Brazil v Croatia match.

I have to say Andy Townsend's summarising is about as good as his West Brom career.

This was Lee Dixon/Clark Carlisle (or whoever) during the Chile v Australia game but to be honest it could equally apply to almost any "pundit".

After continually berating the linesman for their "poor performance" with very marginal offside decisions, he criticised a Chilean player for mistiming his run and being flagged "clearly" offside.

When the replay was shown a couple of minutes later, the decision was shown to be another very marginal one. Dixon/Carlisle (or whoever) declined to criticise for once.

Just the once.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

"Ecuador have a great team, even Jackson Martinez can't get in it"
Clark Carlisle

Maybe it's because he's Colombian.

Jonathan Pearce's continual droning on about the "controversial" France goal with regard to the goal line technology was embarrassing.

Yesterday morning on 5live they had the usual England game post mortem. Alan Mullery as part of his reposte was pointing out how well Puerto Rico had played against Uruguay.

I think it was Ecuador v Switzerland, the referee was cautioning one of the players and, because of this, could not allow a break to develop for the other team. This sort of thing happens from time to time, because once the referee has stopped the game for a foul he has to issue the caution before play restarts - he cannot let it restart and then come back and caution the player. Except that this is exactly what the commentator said he could do - so he clearly isn't qualified to do his own job! Grrr...

I name and shame Sam Matterface. He was corrected by his co-commentator Clarke Carlisle - a former player who knew the Law! Quite remarkable, as another commentator may have said.

If Clark Carlisle knows the laws of the game why did he witter on and on about intent (though not always consistently) - a feature that was removed several years ago with regard to fouls

That's something I get annoyed by. Another one is where the referee makes the correct decision within the laws of game but the pundits say it's a bad decision, essentially because they disagree with the laws of the game. So a 'good' referee is one who is not bound by the laws of the game...

I've never heard any criticisms of referee's for making the correct decisionShocked

The most stupid comment I've heard recently was from Lawro regarding Diego Costa's dive in order to get a penalty against the Dutch, "he's been very clever" was Lawro's observation...........so blatant cheating is clever now is it?Crazy

Nothing new there Isaac. Michael Owen did the same to "earn" a penalty against Argentina with the same old mantra being heard - "he's got every right to go down"

On ITV, Patrick Vierra refused to criticise Thomas Muller's over reaction which led to Pepe's sending off, saying it was part of the "modern game". IIRC, he said he'd be more upset with the ref if Muller had been booked for his part.

It all got a bit heated in the ITV studio and might have ended up with handbags at dawn between Vierra and Adrian Chiles had Lee Dixon not acted as peacemaker Pirate

And cancelled out by the misdemeanours of Beckham and Shearer.

Lawrenson has form. A few years ago when on MOTD he said a 'naïve' defender should have 'taken the yellow' for the team to prevent the opposition scoring (Middlesbrough lost at home to a late West Ham goal scored by Scott Parker who ran through 20 yards through the Boro' defence).

Jonathan Pearce's continual droning on

About nine minutes into tonight's game he said Brazil would qualify for the Second Round for the '18th World Cup running'.
I make this the 12th World Cup since 1966 when Brazil went out in the FIRST ROUND!

He's certainly the worst Five Live commentator I've listened to so far.

In comparison, the contributions of Brad Friedel and John Hartson have been very good.

Jonathan Pearce reached his peak when commentating on 'Robot Wars', a programme which suited his manic style. It's been downhill ever since.

Yes, of course. I've just re-read the statement and realised what was wrong with it. Plus what I'd misread.

Sorry, it's these 1am finishes! Thankfully there's only one more after tonight!

Brazil also never got out of the group stages in 1974, 78 and 82 when the second round was an additional group phase in which only the winners progressed to the final or semi-finals in 82. Finishing second in their group in 74 and 78 consigned Brazil to 3rd/4th place play-off. You could also add 1950 to that list as the final was a four team group stage won by Uruguay.
