So, according to Clive Tyldsley, the Iranian players have their Christian names on the back of their shirts...

Well they did have one ChristianCrazy Andranik Teymourian an ethnic Armenian.

He's also known as Timotian. I assume one version of his surname is Armenian and one is Iranian(Pushtu).

And I gather Algeria won only their second ever WC match - the other being their famous win over West Germany in 1982..... of course forgetting that they also beat Chile that year - hence setting up the fixed WG-Austria game.

Where do they get ythese pumpkins ?

[If Algeria had retained their 3-0 HT lead over Chile then they would have progressed whatever the result of the other game]

Not a mistake, but it amused me anyway...

Netherlands v Chile today, the commentator was talking about Jaanmart, the Netherlands full back, and saying that he was winning his 19th Dutch Cap tonight.

Perhaps he's too young to remember them?
Also I think I heard 'Robben opens his legs and stretches out'.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

Actually, he also said the win was against the 'reigning world champions West Germany' in 1982...

Not a sports presenter but a news report wording that amused me today. Trying to find the England match commentary on the radio as I drove home I ended up with Radio Humberside on for a while (?!). Whilst this wasn't what I wanted it meant that I heard one of their reporters talking about a "Yorkshireman campaigning for the right to die in the Supreme Court tomorrow". Personally, I think I'd prefer at home with relatives at hand, but each to their own ….

Earlier this evening, Phil Neville suggested that England would like to get on the plane tonight with 'at least three points'. Nice to see that he's improving as a summariser....

Again, not a sports presenter, but on Helicopter Heroes this morning (it was on in the background. Honest!), Rav (?) talked about the A1 connecting London to Newcastle, Scotland and beyond. I thought the A1 stopped at Edinburgh.

At the Portugal v. Ghana match on BBC red button (when I eventually found out how to get it), the commentator said when Ghana equalised, 'That makes the USA's position much safer'. This despite the fact that Ghana just needed one more goal to put them out. All through the match it was just about Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The fact that Ghana could still get through and probably only needed to win was never mentioned.

I was not paying 100% attention, but did the ITV commentator refer to a player of Club Africain to be one of the few Algerian players to play club football in Algeria? (Hopefully he was referring to Djabou, the only member of the starting line up to play in Tunisia - they will only use a player from the Algerian league, if they need to change the goalkeeper).

I guess all North African countries look the same!!

Thankfully, his colleague commentating on the Germany-USA knew better. He mentioned the US's position being safer when Portugal got their second. But I don't think he ever acknowledged that, if Ghana had taken a 2-1 lead, then they'd have been in 2nd place for as long as the Germany game was 1-0.

Meanwhile, watching the highlights of yesterday's games, and I am informed the last time Uruguay beat a South American team in the knock out stages was in the Maracana against Brazil 1950

Of course, there was no knock out stage in 1950, there was a final pool of four. Brazil came into the game with victories over Sweden (7-1) and Spain (6-1). Uruguay could only draw with Spain (2-2) before beating Sweden (3-2), so Brazil would have been champions with a draw.

Uruguay came back to win 2-1 from 1-0 down at 47 minutes. Sweden beat Spain to take third place

Listening to the build up to the Brazil v Chile game on the radio yesterday, I heard Alan Green state that you couldn't get a ticket to the game for love nor money. His next sentence was to say the going rate was 15000 Reals or about £4000.

Rio Ferdinand remarked during the Brazil v.Chile game that the fans at the Maracana were so passionate. However the game was in Belo Horizonte. You would think someone called Rio would know which Brazilian city he was in.
Also Gary Lineker said at the beginning of extra-time. 'We have another 45 minutes of football to enjoy'.

Spotted two mistakes on Radio 2 today. Chris Evans on his breakfast show said a record four of the eight round of 16 ties at the World Cup went to extra tie when it was actually FIVE.
Then on Simon Mayo's drivetime show Phil Williams interviewing a Man U fan who's converted to Dagenham & Redbridge (see my post in Premier & Football League section) asked him the difference watching non-league - Daggers have been a League club since 2007!

On several occasions alleged masters of grammatical correctness the BBC have said that Neymar has damaged a Vertebrae. This is of course the plural - correct usage is "a vertebra" or "one of his vertebrae".

About 6:50 on Radio 4 this morning, and talking about last night's game, one of the two presenters then said that Germany will now be facing Argentina or the Netherlands next Wednesday.

You'd think that they'd know the schedule of matches by now.

At least she did correct the error a few mins later.
