During last night's Brazil Germany game Steve Wilson stated that he could hear the strains of Deutschland über alles coming from the stands. Now, a number of Nazis may have gone into hiding in Brazil after the war but.....

Hardly an error. A lot of people refer to the German national anthem by this title even though the first verse with those words is no longer sung because of its association with the Nazi regime. The tune's the same but the third verse is used. The text was written in 1841, not in the 1930s for the Nazis as some people think.

'A lot of people'
You mean a lot of Sun and Daily Mail/Express readers who still haven't realised that World War 2 is over.
As you say only the third verse has been used since 1945. It's only the first verse that contains the 'Deutschland über alles' phrase.
Personally, I found it offensive and embarrassing that a BBC commentator should come out with this cr*p.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

The BBC also referred to the anthem as Deutschland Uber Alles when sung at the start of the game.

This was Lee Dixon/Clark Carlisle (or whoever) during the Chile v Australia game but to be honest it could equally apply to almost any "pundit".

After continually berating the linesman for their "poor performance" with very marginal offside decisions, he criticised a Chilean player for mistiming his run and being flagged "clearly" offside.

When the replay was shown a couple of minutes later, the decision was shown to be another very marginal one. Dixon/Carlisle (or whoever) declined to criticise for once.

Just the once.

Several times in the build-up to France-Ecuador, the commentators referred to Benzema's shot after the final whistle which flew into the top corner against Switzerland as being an error by the referee 'blowing up too early' and 'being too hasty'. I don't recall anywhere in the rules to say when time is up, that the referee must wait for shots to be taken befor blowing the whistle?

Nice Gary opened up tonight telling us that USA were looking for a win to equal their best ever performance in a WC by reaching the last eight. Not counting their semi-final appearance in 1930, obviously,,,,,,,Crazy

Although I'd much rather be posting a Colemansballs type comment; in a similar vein to Buncranaboy's post the evening news on Radio 5 live on Wednesday questioned whether Germany could now go on to become the first European country to win the World Cup outside of Europe. Still you live and learn as I never knew that South Africa a long 4 years ago, was a European country.

Annoyed by commentators saying Argentina haven't won anything since 1993.

So the 2 Olympic gold medals don't count then.

Glenn Hoddle stated that Scotland beat England in England's next match after their 1966 WC Final win. Not true, as they didn't play England until April 1967 and England had played 3 previous internationals since that WC Final win.

They don't count as senior titles, just like their five World Youth Championship titles don't.

After 90 minutes of yesterday's game Alan Hansen said that Switzerland would play the same way in extra-time, only even more so.

Talking of Alan Hansen, he has been signed up as a guest punter with BT Sport and will be giving his opinions on Liverpool in this years CL games.

The commentator on the Birmingham City Ladies v. Bristol Academy game referred to Karen Carney as a 'taliswoman'. Not sure if this was a joke or not. If not then he was incorrect as the last three letters of 'talisman' do not denote masculinity. The word originates from an Arabic source. Possibly a ridiculous case of Political Correctness.

On BBC Radio Solent's football coverage today presenter Paul Bunker at least three times (once before and twice after the game) called AFC Bournemouth's opponents 'BRENTFORD UNITED'.
they also gave out the wrong result in the Bashley v Merthyr game saying they were 3-0 down at half time and then announcing they had won 4-1 at full time, correct score (1-4) was given later in the Non-League show.
Also dipped into BBC Somerset/Bristol on the way home and when they read the FA Cup results of local teams they included Wellington 2-1 Ellesmere Rangers obviously thinking it was the Somerset club who were in Western League action today not realising there is another team called Wellington from Herefordshire. Would be an awfully long way to travel from Shropshire to Somerset at this early stage of the competition!

A corker on five live this morning, reporting on England under 21's 2-1 victory over Croatia in the play off first leg manager Gareth Southgate (apparently) suggested that they will be looking for all three points in the return gameCrazy

Another recent gaffe on five live "Burnley ended a run of five games without a win with a 2-2 draw at Leicester City"!Crazy

Tanya Stevenson of Channel 4 Racing is an accomplished mistake maker, following the example of her former colleague John McCririck. Tanya upholds the fat windbag's propensity for mispronouncing anything other than one syllable names. I haven't heard her try the likes of Bancnuanaheirann, but I'm sure she would mangle that very nicely! For one race on Saturday Tanya kept referring to the competitors as 'he' when the race for mares and fillies.
One of Tanya's colleagues referred to a 5 year old mare as a filly. While the general public may not necessarily know it, it doesn't seem unreasonable that a racing reporter should know that a filly officially becomes a mare at the age of 5.

Radio Five have been repeatedly stating in their sports bulletins this morning that games at the World Cup in Qatar could kick off 'as late as 1 am in the morning'. As opposed to 1 am in the afternoon presumably.

Sky Sports stated last Saturday that Sunderland's 8-0 at Soton was their record defeat conveniently ignoring the fact that they lost 8-0 at Watford back in the 80s and probably worse before that. In other words football only started when Sky got involved

Nail on the head there, old son. So many of these mistakes by presenters stem from their attitude that football didn't exist before 1992. SKY especially, though they're far from being the only ones guilty.

In October 1968 they lost 8-0 at West Ham; Geoff Hurst scored six. Their defeat at Southampton occurred one day short of the anniversary.

Here we go again...on BBC Breakfast whatever this morning Charlie Stayt announced that the FA Cup starts tonight at Warrington Town v Exeter City and the other one, the one whose girlfriend left him for another woman, started boring us about the team full of teachers, plumbers, postmen, blah, blah. And I think he said Warrington play in the Evo Stik Northern Division.
They can stick that where the sun can't get..I'm off to New Street!!!
