Sports presenters mistakes Can't Post or Reply Privately

One of the things that drives me nuts is the frequency with which sports presenters, commentators and other so-called experts come up with stats and facts that are completely wrong.
Being well paid to do a job that many sports fans would love to have (me included once upon a time) and having sod all else to do except make sure that what they are telling us holds a modicum of truth, I'm regularly astounded as to how often they just seem to make it up as they go along........and I'm sure other posters will come up with some gems of their own.

Some of their ignorance is of course due to the fact that football didn't exist before Sky and the Premiership but since then so much football has been televised that you'd think the salient facts would sink in.
In the last week alone I've seen a CL match introduced featuring the Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest (NO THEY'RE NOT) and another featuring Champions League newcomers AAB Aalborg (NOT SO - THEY WERE THERE IN 1995).
Alan Curbishley told Setanta viewers last night how unfortunate Steve McMahon had been in his time as England manager although Setanta's best moment of the week (so far) came when the Italian Serie A table showed Hucknall Town propping up the rest. Not surprisingly I suppose given the disparity in budgets.Crazy
I think it was Motty who pointed out at the Emirates last week that Everton hadn't won "on this ground" since sometime well before the stadium was even conceived.
And as for the presenting fools who try to banter and exchange facts and opinions with Steve Claridge a couple of evenings a week - it's surely only a matter of time before Claridge takes a very deep sigh and lamps one of them. Hopefully live.
Hopefully this will become an active thread with people adding the most recent howlers............over to you !

I can remember in a champions league game around the late 1990's involving Valencia and possibly Man utd.
Ron Atkinson continually referred to their french defender Jocelyn Angloma as Josimar who was a Brazillian fullback from the 86 and 90 world cup.

David Pleat's complete lack of knowledge of recent Czech history in the European Championship refering to the Czech Republic as Czechoslovakia then later on the Czechoslovak Republic.
The (in)famous Archie MacPherson once praised Russian defender Karpin a few seconds later he was sent off for a terrible challenge. A fine example of the curse of the commentator.

Jimmy Greaves in the "good old days" of Saint and Greavesie with microphone in hand on the pitch somewhere informing Saint that the manager he'd come to interview was almost ready and he hoped to be "incommunicado with him in just a couple of minutes".

Must admit that Pleat is my all time least favourite 'expert', and it's not uncommon for me to turn over if he's prattling on in his lovely, ill-informed, patronising manner. It still grates when he refers to Ruud Gullit, and has his name rhyming with mullet.

Re: [buncranaboy] Sports presenters mistakes [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

On a similar theme, I have often been irritated by certain style of stats that are banded around and sound shocking or surprising, but on closer inspection, are really not and are either deliberately, or mistakenly, misleading in the scenario the present.

An example of a normal 'surprising' stat was one often quoted in November 2006, when Spurs beat champions Chelsea 2-1 in the league. The stat, mentioned frequently in match reports, was that prior to that match, Spurs hadn't beaten Chelsea for 16 years (1-2 in 1990). This kind of stat I don't mind, as it has some meaning; Spurs would have played Chelsea home and away for those 16 seasons (both teams in the PL for the span of the stat) as well as in several cup games,

In comparison, similar sounding 'surprising' stats become quite meaningless when they are given some historic context. For example, either last season or the season before, a commentator highlighted the really 'surprising' stat that Portsmouth hadn't won at Old Trafford in the league in nearly 50 years (0-3 in 1957). However, while true, comparing the history of the two clubs, at the time there had only been 6 or 7 league matches at Old Trafford between the two clubs since 1957, making the stat much less 'surprising' than if there had been 50 or so matches, as the original wording makes out.

The worst of these was in the Arsenal - Hull match earlier this season, where several commentators and reports pointed out that Hull's win was their first against Arsenal in the league since 1915. Again, although true, it makes it sound like Hull had drawn or lost 90 years worth of league matches against Arsenal, rather than that Hull and Arsenal had not played any league matches against each other since 1915.

Equally irritating are Similar comments, heard particularly near the start of a season, such as 'team so-and-so have not conceded a goal in the premiership yet this season' and 'Joe Bloggs has scored in every match this season' are heard after only 2 rounds of fixtures, where the time frame of the stat is so short as to remove any significance from it.

Sky Sports are a constant source for meaningless stats, especially the 'rolling' on-screen headlines and facts presented on match days.
Another gripe of sorts, and this one frequently perpetuated by fans, is to describe a certain club as a 'bogey' side. Fans will trot this out even if refering to a game played well over a decade previously when, by and large, all personnel, officials, even stadia were different with little connection to the current situation.

Unintentionally funniest of all are the Eurosport bulletins which seem to be overdubbed by someone who's seeing the footage in question for the first time.........before usually getting cut off in mid-sentence. Puts me in mind of Alan Partridge at his finest.

Then there's the round-up on programmes like Goalissimo where an obviously ignorant presenter tries to summarise the effect that the matches have had on the table........by telling us that, for example, Elfsborg drop to second. That would be from the second place they occupied the previous week then, as a cursory look at the table in question will reveal.

Five Live are not usually too bad by comparison in the gaffe-table . I only listened to the Newcastle-Villa game last night for about half-an-hour and couldn't believe it as a string of incorrect facts were lazily trotted out.

1 "Surprisingly Villa haven't been able to score yet as, until last week, Newcastle had conceded at least 2 goals in every match". NOT TRUE - Opening day 1-1 at Old Trafford
2 "A Newcastle win will take them off the bottom above WBA but still behind Wigan and Bolton on goal difference"
NO - DO THE MATHS AGAIN
3 "The table is now so tight that if Newcastle were to win on Saturday they would be only 4 points behind Hull"
NO - DO THE MATHS AGAIN

And there were others which I can't recall at the moment though disappointingly there were no pellanties.

One of Motty's biggest howlers was the last 16 world cup match in 2002 between Spain and rep of Ireland. Spain had used all 3 subs and another player went off injured at the start of extra time. He failed to notice that Spain were playing extra time with 10 men and it was never mentioned for the rest of the commentary

I just remembered the other good one was during the discussion with our studio host after the game when he speculated on where that left things with more than 1/3 or the season now gone. Have I missed a couple of rounds of matches then or have 4 teams been expelled from the league overnight ?

Last nights coverage saw further examples of this laziness - do the voiceover men actualy earn money for what they do ?
Anyway - Setanta's hour long review of the Bundesliga which I do enjoy but shall in future be sorely tempted to watch with the sound off, or even while chatting to the missus. Hoffenheim vs Karlsruhe was more than once referred to as a battle between two of the newly promoted sides. NO IT IS NOT !
Whilst one of the managers during the Dortmund vs Bochum game was referred to as "The most-capped coach that you'll ever see in the Bundesliga so far". Huh ?

And finally nobody amongst ITV's finest (splutters) even hinted that the late consolation scored by John Terry in Rome might actually be quite important should those 2 sides finish level on points.........

Also whoever was commenting claimed that one of the Arsenal lads "scored two goals on this very ground last season in the F.A. Youth Cup..." - wrong - the game was played at Accrington Stanley...

I guess they can get away with most of this sort of stuff because 99.9% of viewers wouldn't know whether they are right or wrong Unsure

Re: [buncranaboy] Sports presenters mistakes [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I seem to remember a commentator in the 1990 World Cup on a UAE game referring to one of the emirates going down injured. I think it was tongue in cheek though.

In terms of knowledge of the laws of the game, when Arsenal beat Rotherham on pens in the League Cup a few years back Rotherham had had a man sent off meaning - as most people on here will know - that for the shoot-out Arsenal had to nominate a player to not take part. This was noticed as the tally got up to about 11/12 pens each and the commentators were beside themselves with confusion over (a) what would happen next - would Arsenal just have a free shot and (b) why the Arsenal lad who sat out didn't take a pen. Obviously they saw this as a huge oversite by the referee and all 20 other players and both managers to forget the poor lad was there...

Another laws-of-the-game one was in a Spurs-Liverpool game about 15 years ago where Liverpool had a shot which went across goal past the 'keeper - who was on his 6-yard box - and was touched in by another Liverpool striker who was behind the 'keeper. There was a defender on the line so, again, the pundits (which I think included Ray Clemence) got into a flap over the goal being disallowed for offside (it was - there was only the one defender between the scorer and the goal line when the first striker shot) and not one of them noticed the fact that the 'keeper was further out that the scorer.

On the Liverpool-Everton coverage earlier the commentator said that Everton had only been AWARDED 1 penalty at Anfield in the last 71 years. Where would he have got this info, as presumably the awarding of penalties wasn't tracked as such pre-Premier Lge? Is there a website or book with such stats, that someone could've derived by trawling through match reports?

Not a sports presenter as such but from the ineffable Sunday Mercury - they have finally realised after several months that Luke Moore has NOT scored enough goals to feature in the top Premiership scorers list but for the last few weeks a new and surprising name has risen up the Championship top scorers list. Step forward Leon McKenzie (Coventry City) who is listed as having netted 11 league goals (8 for Thurrock).
Well researched, sports editor.

I'm sure I spotted what may have been a deliberate mistake on last nights MOTD. At the end of the programme, Gary Lineker summarised the league table in terms of Champions League chasers, those trying to avoid the drop zone and those clubs chasing a European place ! I think these clubs should be named !
Or did that nice Gary really mean to say "the clubs involved in the race to be fifth or sixth rather than seventh cos it pays more".

............and just now in his summation of the Carling Cup Final, the fat pillock Alan Green announced that Arsenal and Everton should be grateful to Man Utd for winning the trophy as it opens up a further league place (losing finalists no longer get into Europe - phew Spurs !) to be designated as a UEFA quailfier. And this 24 hours after telling all and sundry on his phone-in that the UEFA Cup was utterly pointless.

They never did did they?

Still, I agree that (a) he is a fat pillock and (b) he talks a load of old balls. He is another one who spends half his time talking about the UEFA Cup slagging off Spurs and Villa for not committing their best players to the competition and the other half saying how pointless it is to play in it.

Good one on SkySportsNews last night after showing the goals from Dunfermline vs Falkirk : "Even if they win the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers, Falkirk will compete in Europe for the first time next season".

No escaping it then, Bairns !

To comment (a little late) on buncranaboy's post of 1st March. The losing finalist in the League Cup has never qualified for Europe (via the League Cup). ONly the winner can do so. Hence this opens up 6th place in the league for the newly named Europa League. Everton will qualify as either FA Cup winners or runners-up (I don't think that has changed), and if they finish 5th or 6th in the league (as is likely), this opens up seventh place as well - so Fulham, West Ham, Man City and Spurs (at least) are still in competition for Europe. Whether they care or not is another matter.

Similarly, Falkirk will qualify in Scotland - even if they are relegated http://news.bbc.co.uk/...cot_cups/8019762.stm

A list of the teams qualified for Europe, frequently updated as the season progresses can be found at http://www.xs4all.nl/...t/uefa/qual2009.html

Fulham may have another route, they currently top the Premier League fair play table (as at Mid-March, which was the latest one I could find). UEFA's published intermediate ranking only appears to go up to the end of December (does anyone know where to find a more up to date one?), and while England weren't then in the top three associations that qualify an extra team that way, they weren't too far off in terms of points.

The fair placed positions are secondary, so if England qualifies for one of the three places (and it is top three this season, without a draw), then the top team in the English fair play table, not already qualified, gets the fair play place.

Didn't someone after that dross at the Camp Nou last night describe Chelsea's performance as great?
I hope that Barcelona stuff them in the 2nd Leg. This is not any form of anti- Chelsea bias, it's just that if one team wants to play and the other just wants to prevent them then it is a sad day for the game if they ultimately succeed.

At least Chelsea know they HAVE to score at Stamford Bridge (unless they want it to go to penalties) so hopefully Barca can pick them off while they're out looking for goals. AND why did ITV assume we were all supporting chelski???

I may be wrong Leo, but I seem to recall that the rule was changed at the end of last season. I believe the rationale behind the change was that the authorities deemed it fairer to award a European place to a club based on their league position than awarding that place to the club that failed to win the cup final.

But then again I might just be going senile. Unsure

There was talk of the rule being changed, but the result was that it wasn’t.

2009/10 Competition format on UEFA.com: “The losing finalist for the domestic cup competition will still be entitled to be entered for the UEFA Europa League should the domestic cup winners qualify for the UEFA Champions League.”

Many people in the media never take the above into account when making statements like the above, they just assume everyone can still get 3 points from every match still to be played - real six pointers.

In the Burton v Oxford game they could not even work out which set of fans was which.

Just heard a classic on Sky Sports News - Swimmer Michael Phelps made his European comeback last night (I've heard this about ten times already today, it just goes on a loop as background noise) and finished only third in his race. The presenter whose turn it is now informs us "he was hindered by the fact he was the only competitor without a swim suit!"*

Happened to me once that at Sheaf Valley baths in primary school! Oh, how the girls laughed!!!

* The story actually was he was the only one not in one of those all-in-one body suits.

ITV on fine form last night. During the second half, the match commentator mused about The Wardrobe. "Papa Bouba Diop. Who can ever forget when they heard that name for the first time on that sensational night at World Cup 2002 when Ivory Coast beat the holders France in the opening game". Knob.

Foolishly I Sky-plussed the Coventry-Portsmouth tie and watched it delayed by an hour or so. ITV4 obviously don't update their scheduling when programmes over-run as this did with the extra-time. And so my recording ended after 113 minutes of play, though I was quite glad to see the back of it at the time, that's not the point Mad

The obvious mistake is EPL, presumably supposed to stand for English Premier League, when it is in fact the Barclay's Premier League or without sponsorship the FA Premier League.
Trust the yanks to change the name to suit themselves, we use their terminology for sports competitions ie NFL ,NBA and World Series, so they should use ours.

You're right of course. From now on, I will use FAPL as the abbreviated form. It doesn't matter if many won't get what I'm on about. That may often be the case in any event.

EPL is the way many popular computer games refer to the Premier League and therefore many people who play these games say EPL. As indeed do many foreign fans. So please dont just suggest its the damn Yanks again as they get the blame for quite enough as it is...ie Soccer !!

another classic cock-up from BBC Five Live's Irish presenter Firday night. Following the FA Cup, he was interviewing Julian Dicks, the Grays Athletic manager. He mentioned their cup-tie away at Bury Town and siad that's one hellava long way to go and asked if they were travelling up tonight or travelling on Saturday (today)!!!!!!
Julian was very polite and said they would travel on the day as it's only an hour and a half journey.
Research or common knowledge would be nice.
This irish guy gives me so many laughs; he so needs to know about the sport and geography (see my earlier posting).

Soccer is an English word anyway, not American. If you look back at historical reports from the UK you see the term used quite frequently.
Given that American football is far more widely played in the US it's common sense to use the name soccer for soccer (unless you want to use the full name of 'association football' but I can imagine how well that would go down with broadcasters). We say 'gridiron' or 'American football' over here, neither of which are the proper name - what's the big deal?

Exactly. Soccer was used in Public Schools as a shortened version of association football. Just as Rugger was used as a shortened version of Rugby Football. But for some reason people seem to think it is an American saying

I'm with you (and Stephen Fry) on this - the Yanks get a bad press. Of course there are idiots over there, but there are a fair few here too. And it's hardly like the Yanks have a copyright on the egocentric view of the world. Then again I generally believe the best way to view any country is to look for the best bits.

Well I have just come back from 10 days there. What always amazes me when I am in the States is the fact that despite it having a reputation of being such a violent country everyone is so polite and friendly.
As a customer in any establishment you are treated with respect and professionalism as opposed to the grunting sullen Yoofs you usually get here. And you dont feel like you are getting ripped off at every turn.
And to be able to go to a sporting event where fans all mix in together and enjoy the game without any macho posturing is brilliant

I haven't ever felt it had a reputation as being violent - other than in certain hot spots - it's more that people perceive Americans as thinking the US is the centre of the universe and having no interest in the rest of the world. I have never met an American who met that description. I'm sure there are some, but then are Brits like that too. Most of the Americans I've met are envious of my living in the UK, so close to so many other countries with their different cultures. They are a far cry from the militaristic red necks portrayed by the press all cheering on Bush. In fact, possibly my favourite memory of the US was in Vegas in 2004 where we asked our cab driver what he thought of Bush. His response? "Bush sucks donkeys' dicks!"

Not a commentators mistake as such but Theo Walcott said in his post match interview that Arsenal hadn't won the CL for 4, 5 or 6 years so it was time again. I'd always thought he was reasonably intelligent.............

However Ruud Gullit later topped him by glorying in Ajax's CL win because Holland need the points for their co-efficient what with there only being one Dutch club in the CL. So has Enschede been taken by the Germans? Again?

Edit : and add all the nonsense about Chelsea and Arsenal only needing one point to get through. Ten points is not certain qualification.

This needs to be taken on a case basis.

Chelsea have nine points, Spartak Moscow 6, O'M 3 and Zilina none.
If Chelsea get a single point against Spartak, while O'M win in the next round of matches, then Spartak would need a further four points to finish ahead of Chelsea (assuming they lose the last two games). By beating Chelsea 3-0 and drawing with Spartak, O'M would then finish second and Chelsea would go out on 10 points.
If Chelsea only get one more point, and it is against O'M, then Chelsea are through - there being no way in this case for either O'M or Zilina to finish above Chelsea
If Chelsea only get one more point, and it against Zilina, then O'M and Spartak can both end on 12 points.

SO Chelsea do only need one point to get through - but only if the point is gained at the Velodrome in Marseille

The mathematics is the same for Arsenal - a point gained in Braga guarantees their qualification

The dynamic of Group G is different, Real Madrid have nine points against four each for Milan and Ajax. Real are away to Milan and Ajax in the next two games - and a point in either game means they are through - but if they only get ten points by drawing at home to Auxerre, it is possible for both Milan and Ajax to end on 11.

For Bayern, again on 9 points, all three of their rivals have one point each. This means if Bayern only get one more point, then a three way draw on 10 points is still possible.

The probabilities favour a team on ten points though.

In Group A - should Inter reach ten points by beating Spurs again, then they will be through. In that case Spurs would be limited to 10 points, (but could not overtake Inter), while a winner from Bremen v Twente could reach 11 points by beating Spurs and Inter. Clearly if either the winner of Bremen v Twente or Spurs reach 10 points, they must also get through

If however, Spurs beat Inter then both can reach 10 points by beating the loser of the Bremen-Twente game, while the winner of said game can win the group by winning their final two games, so 10 points is not enough!

In Group B, Lyon have won three games, and will qualify if they pick up a point at Benfica in two week's time.

Ten points is not enough for Manchester United, if they reach the target by beating Bursaspor while Valencia beat Rangers. Both Valencia and Rangers could still finish above United by winning the last two games. However, even if United lose in Turkey, they can be certain to go through by beating the loser of the Valencia-Rangers game, (either will do if Valencia and Rangers draw).

There is still one unlikely route to get three teams to 10 points in Group D. It depends on Barcelona's only remaining points being gained against the loser of the Rubin Kazan - Panathanaikos clash. The winner would have to win all their remaining games, while Kobenhavn would need to win another game after beating Barcelona. [This is of course, mathematics - I think you would get some fine odds from a bookmaker if you wanted to bet these results actually happening]

I must have been at a loose end as I watched and listened to Andy Townsend's summation of the Stoke v West Ham QF last night. He praised Stoke and said they went about their business in an honest manner.
This was immediately followed by clips showing their goals - Huth's free header from a Delap throw when Upson couldn't get close to him because Walters impeded his path with no intent to play the ball himself, then Huth pulled Hitzlsperger out of the wall for Higginbotham to fire through the gap and score the winner. Between these, he also featured a blatant dive from Etherington to earn a penalty which he missed but none the less........
Either the definition of the word "honest" has changed, or Townsend's a complete twat. Answers on a postcard..............

Each to their own opinion but I thought both Stoke goals were fine and that Etherington was fouled from behind (not by Scott Parker) for the penalty, the West Ham goal though clearly shouldn't have stood.

Only saw a bit of the Stoke v West Ham game, but did hear Jim Beglin giving his 'learned' opinion about Obinna getting booked that 'if he (Obinna) had stayed down a bit longer (having been injured in committing the foul), the ref might have shown him more compassion and not booked him'.

Hmm, the ref changing his mind about booking a player because he lies on the floor after a poor challenge (for which he reached for his card straight away). That would be setting a great example, wouldn't it? Thankfully I've not seen a ref change his mind under those circumstances.

That is a common ploy though by players in the hope that the ref will think they've suffered enough already.

It's official - Ray Wilkins is now senile. On a number of occasions at 3-0 down last night, he commented as Spurs cleared to give Real another corner - "Spurs are okay with these; they can defend corners no problem, it's when they run at them there are problems".
That would be apart from when Madrid scored their first and second goals then, both from corners.

And none of the learned panel actually said that Spurs were pants, even allowing for the fact that they were down to ten for most of the game. Jermaine Jenas gave possibly the worst performance I've ever seen from an England international player.

I agree with both these statements. We were out of our depth. Still, if someone had said to me this time last year that we'd get tonked by Real Madrid in the Champions league quarter final I'd have told them they're nuts.

It'll never happen again and as soon as Rednapp becomes England manager we'll sink back to mid table mediocrity. But it was nice while it lasted.

Watching the golf this afternoon one of the commentators made a major faux-pas as they were waxing lyrical about Darren Clarke being in contention.

First commentator: "With the recent successes of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, should Clarke go on to win the tournament then perhaps Northern Ireland should retire."

The second commentator then replied "Maybe they will stop killing each other"

Eerie silence, and 30 minutes later an apology.

The comment that annoys me most is when a team has won 1-0 (or 2-0, etc) away from home in a two-legged competition and commentators talk about "the vital away goal", when in fact the only team that can now win on away goals is the team that's just lost!

Heard it too, and that's the confusion the "commercial league names" of the two leagues will cause to people who
  1. don't do their research properly
  2. don't know what they're talking about
Not sure which category to put the commentator in. Probably the research section.

I detest lazy journalism, partly because they're getting paid to something I'd give my right hand to be a position to, and we've had lots before during and after Ireland's play-off in Estonia. And no doubt it will still go on till the tie is wrapped up. " The 6th attempt to win a play-off" etc " has resulted in 4 previous defeats...".

Er, no. France for the 2010 WC, Turkey for Euro 2000, Belgium for WC 1998, Holland for Euro 96 with the solitary success against Iran for WC 2002. And one other.......

Perhaps the FAI are too embarrassed to recall the shenanigans of 1965, but the journo's shouldn't be - when the powers that be settled for pots of cash rather than a better chance of qualifying for WC 1966 and we lost a play-off to Spain 1-0 in Paris.

It annoys me when cricket commentators say the 2nd new ball is due after 80 overs. Wrong. It is the new ball, not the 2nd new ball. That would be due after 160 overs. Admittedly, the game starts off with A new ball, but it is not THE new ball. It is just the ball. Or am I just talking a load of balls?

Technically its is the 2nd new ball - the one used at the start of the innings being the first. It is the first replacement new ball (but necessarily the first replacement ball).

I think the word "new" is being used in different contexts. The first ball is new because it is the first occurence, in other words there wasn't another ball previous to it. The second ball is new because it replaces the first ball. So perhaps we should call it the new new ball! My coat, hat and shoes are firmly on, and I am leaving the building...

There was a classic tonight on Channel 5 coverage of Spurs v POAK. Dave Woods and Graham Taylor insisted for about 10 minutes that Defoe's goal was disallowed for offside rather than a foul, someone obviously had a word in the ear before a climbdown. No apology to the assistant however.

Before the Fleetwood Town v.Yeovil Town match, the commentator mentioned that Yeovil Town reached the 5th Round as a non-league club in 1949, then added 'Can you imagine that happening now?' as though it was impossible.
I seem to remember only last season Crawley Town reached the 5th round, going out to ManYoo (as did Yeovil).
Kidderminster and Blyth Spartans have also reached the 5th round.

To be honest, I can't remember who said it, but think it was the commentator as it was said before the match kicked off but after the start of the actual coverage rather than the pre-match studio stuff.

Not mistakes as such, but still nonense, were the commentator's statements during the AFC Totton v Bristol Rovers game. Not content with continually mentioning the day jobs of the Totton players he added, at least:

* 'x' is a recruitment consultant for boardroom level vacancies in the oil and gas industry. Six figure salaries there, so 'x' is probably to blame for the current recession.

* 'y' works in bidet supply/fitting. So if you are after a bidet 'y' is your man.

Of course, if you did want a bidet, the first thing you would check before contacting a company was whether one of their employees was a semi-pro footballer Crazy

To alot of League fans and armchair Premiership supporters AFC Totton are an obscure team they'd never have heard of before, BUT he was actually referring to the town of Totton, when he made this comment, which in my opinion is even more thick! You may not have heard of the football club, but i'd say alot more people will have heard of the fairly-decent sized town of Totton, near to Southampton! He was acting like it was some tiny village tucked away in the middle of nowhere!

I think there are character traits found in your average non-league football fanatic which are similar to those found in your average locational geography geek, trainspotter, linguist etc - anything where things can be classified and ticked off. I know I have these traits and it is very rare that I cannot instantly assign any place in the UK to a county but it's just how my brain works. My sister got ten A*s in her GCSEs, 3 As at A-level and a 2.1 at Oxford but she still thinks I'm the clever one because I can drive from Reading to Barnet without looking at a map. Different brains find different things easy or hard.

Re: [leohoenig] Sports presenters mistakes [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

My sister once got as far as the M4/M25 junction and, figuring the M25 is just a big roundabout, turned south. She got as far as Dartford before deciding that she shouldn't need to pay £1 for anything so she must have gone wrong, turned around and drove 3/4 of the way back around the M25 to the A1081. Unfortunately she took the St Albans A1081 turning and ended up stopping at a cab office in St Albans where one of the nice cabbies drove back to the M25 with her following, instructing her to take the next exit to get to Barnet.

She also drove to a wedding in Bristol once and, on getting lost, just pulled up on the hard shoulder and waited for inspiration. It came soon afterwards in the form of a very chivalrous gent who, it so happened, was going to the same wedding who parked his own car, got into my sister's car and directed her to the venue before walking back to collect his own motor!!

She also found her way to university on her bike once by following a chap who "looked like a student". Bit of a pain that he stopped to buy fags - and then smoked one while she waited surreptitiously round the corner - but her instincts were correct and he led her to the campus. Not sure how she got home again mind...

One holiday my parents drove from Alassio in Italy to Cannes in Southern France to watch them play Monaco. We had no idea where the stadium was so followed a car which had some people wearing colours inside. We followed them out into the suburbs, waited for ages while they popped into someone's apartment before emerging with another fan and then tailed them for another two pick-ups before we reached the ground just minutes before kick-off!

Martin Keown showing he knows the rules at the Pompey-Soton game.

Keeer jumps to catch a high ball, attacker jumps in and takes his feet from under him, keeper lands on chin (without ball) and ref gives free-kick to keeper. Keown is aghast at decision. When has it ever been lawful to charge a keeper whose in the air. Surely a pundit should have some knowledge of the laws of the game.

Ha ha - I saw that challenge and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, even though it didn't look right! Obviously looking too hard!

The soft challenge on the keeper is always a favourite. I know sometimes it's true that keepers get soft decisions but then again anyone who's played in goal will know how hurt you can get if someone charges into your ribs while your arms are up catching a ball.

I gave up when I heard the commentator declare that the meeting between Portsmouth and the Scummers was their first since 2005.

Oh well it is only their job to know that the sides met in the FA Cup in Feb 2010. Result Scabs 1 Portsmouth 4.

.....and some suggest that the presentation of sport on ITV is pish.

I have to say it doesn't bother me so much that presenters get things wrong, more that people who profess to know it all use what is said to add to their 'knowledge' base. I have a friend who is a massive football fan and, to my mind, makes a big deal about the fact that she knows more than most blokes to about the game. However, she is always referencing incorrect anecdotes to display her knowledge. It drives me up the wall, especially as those who know her fall for it and suggest that I don't like to think a woman knows better than I do!

Blimey - how difficult is it? At 4-1 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate, if both teams scored one more its 5-2 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate.

If Everton finish sixth, Chelsea seventh and Liverpool eighth then Everton won't qualify for the Europa League.

It is either poor journalism, or a poor FA statement.
However, under the finishing order you give, Everton qualify for the Europa League is Liverpool win the cup, (but not if Chelsea do).

Extra point on that Everton won't qualify if Chelsea win the Champions League final no matter who wins the FA Cup. England will have only 4 Champions League places, so if Chelsea win the Champions League they and only the top 3 go into the champions league with the 4th Place team going into the Europa League.

I understand an extra place will then be allocated to England's UEFA cup contingent. At least it spares us the mockery of surprisingly being allocated that place through "fair play".........again........

No the extra place is only awarded when a holder enters European competition and does not qualify at all for Europe through their league. It was therefore a possibility when Chelsea finishing 7th (or lower) was possible, but no longer applies.

Southgate (or the editor) did the annoying no-no of effectively announcing the result to the Den-Port game half way thru the ITV highlights programme when he said Netherlands were still in the competition (ie Portugal must have won). Having missed both games I'd managed to avoid all broadcasts I was not pleased that Southgate had his "Flint" moment (and I'd locked the front-door !!)..

Croatia V Spain.

Croatia bring on a substitute who we are reliably informed won the double in the season just ended, with Borussia Dortmund, in ITALY.

Later it goes back to the studio where the experts were able to tell ignorant old me that an effort from a Croatian header was the easiest chance of the match. I'd have thought the tap in from 6 yards for the only goal of the game was perhaps a tad easier.

I mean Mick, we don't want quality and techincal brilliance to come out on top do we?

Also Mick, don't tell the rest of your media buddies, this attitude certainly won't spread to the media darlings (Brazil) & their referee when the World Cup next comes around.

I watched the Olympic men's cycling road race just before kick off and at half time at Bilston Town's psf with
Tywyn/Bryncrug.
Atrocious coverage with bias to Cavendish and the British team. In a field that large it was if no one else had entered or had a chance of winning.
Commentator got placings all wrong. Kazakh winner interviewed and questions were about the British team.
I've always wondered why they can't use GPS transmitters to show where everyone is in the race.

British commentators showing bias towards GB riders shock.

Chris Boardman and Hugh Porter were frustrated at the poor
show by the BBC. No on screen info and they were as much in
the dark as the riders.

Yes, Cav was expected to win but although he didn't have a divine
right to the gold medal, many of the field appeared to be happy to
finish outside the top three, rather than give themselves or GB a chance.

Shoddy proof reading from SSN again.

In a bio of Peter Ndlovu after his recent car crash, it's stated he joined Coventry in 1991 and stayed at the "Ricoh Arena" until 1997. Funnily enough even the RA's own wiki page states that it didn't open until 2005.

Not so much a mistake, but it got right on my wick how the commentators this morning kept going on about the brilliant Chelsea support at the Club World Cup - all 700 fans. Also, I know the CWC isn't as important in Europe as it is in other continents but they might at least give it a chance instead of telling everyone every 5 minutes how little it matters in Europe and, then afterwards, changing their minds and telling everyone how disappointed Chelsea were! Arghhhh!!! I haven't watched a football match with the commentary on for ages and this reminded me exactly why...

This time it's the other half of The Football League Show double-act. I give you The Oracle, Leroy Rosenior (244 apps, 73 goals in case you ever forget) who informed us that John Ward had now taken over at Bristol Rovers following Mark McGhee's sacking and was now undefeated in three, although two of those had been postponed. Doing a great job then.

I think you're being mischievous. At 4-4, could one player need one frame and the other need two? Only if snooker introduced handicaps – or had group matches.

Perhaps BBC presenters and reporters don't know the meaning the word 'both'. Half-an-hour ago, in previewing today's Heineken Cup group matches, we were told that 'Both A or B' could go through when he clearly meant only one of the two teams.

I'm guessing that it is because both players can't score two more, it must be one or the other. I suppose "either" would be better grammar.

An unusual mistake for the commentator of St.Johnstone v.Aberdeen. Nigel Hasselbaink was playing for Saints and there is transfer speculation about him.
So the commentator made a weak joke about 'Making plans for Nigel' then explained this to his puzzled co-comentator by saying it was a song by Elvis Costello.
To give credit to ESPN one of the back-room boys let him know it was actually XTC, and he apologised for this gaffe.

During the Radio5Live Commentary of the Brentford v Chelsea game on Sunday Mike Ingham, whilst discussing Chelsea's recent run of success in the FA Cup said that their last outright defeat in the competition was against Barnsley in 2008 under Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Avram Grant was the 'manager' at the time, Scolari was appointed in the summer & presided over 3 FA Cup ties against Southend United and Ipswich Town before being sacked shortly before the 5th round tie at Watford

MOTD last night, Chelsea v. Wigan.

Wigan included Franco di Santo, who was on Chelsea's books 2008-10 but played only eight times.

Di Santo had a shot saved, Wigan kept the attack going and the player won a corner. Dear Old Motty gave us this gem: "Di Santo, who never scored here in his spell with Chelsea, threatened to do the same for the opposition."

BBC TV Breakfast sports news. Barcelona are the first side to overcome a two goal first leg deficit in the Champions League.
I take it that should have qualifications, or that BATE Borisov really do not count for some reason I do not understand?
And of course, this is part of the no football prior to 1992 record list.

Not the first time BBC are having to be brought up on this charge, last season they tried to claim Munich were the 1st side to play the major Euro Final in their own stadium. Even I dredged this lot up,
  • Real Madrid 56-57,
  • Inter Milan 63-64,

Barcelona have twice come back to win (on penalties) after a 3-0 defeat. They did this against Ipswich Town and Gothenburg.
Ipswich was in the UEFA or Cup Winners Cup, but Gothenburg was in the European Cup Semi-Final of 1986. A substitute called Pichi Alonso got all 3 goals.
Never heard of him before or since.
I think Real Madrid came back from 4-1 down against Derby in the 1975-6 European Cup. Think it was 5-1 in the Bernabeu.
Coming back from 2-0 down is not the same as coming back from say 3-1 down when you have the option of winning on away goals.
What were the details of BATE Borisov's comeback?

Not the Champions League but in the 1980's I saw QPR play Partizan Belgrade at Arsenal in the UEFA Cup, they won 6-2 but still managed to go out on away goals as they lost 4-0 in Yugoslavia. I think this is the biggest comeback in European competitions.
Another big comeback was Hearts 3 Bologna 0 followed by Bologna 4 Hearts 0. I think that was also the UEFA Cup.
Lierse SK were probably the only side to come back from a 2-0 deficit from the home leg. They went to Elland Road and won 4-0. Don Revie put the reserves out in the second leg. Arsenal nearly repeated the feat yesterday.

I'm just hoping we can avoid Chelsea and Newcastle.

According to BBC Sport in relation to Dortmund's win tonight:

"It was the first time a team needing to score two extra-time goals to triumph in the Champions League has done so since Manchester United in the 1999 final"

Why do some people find it so difficult to understand the difference between 'injury' or 'stoppage' time and 'extra' time?

To be fair to Jeff, I think he does a better job than most with info coming in left, right and centre and the likes of Matt Le Tiss screaming away in the background. Sure, there's a few bloopers along the way, but fewer than you might expect.

What I do NOT and will NEVER forgive Sky is employing that utter gobshite and spawn of the devil Chris Kamara. But then you would need to be a Bees fan to understand the depth of animosity Bees fans feel towards that whoreson turncoat lickspittle.

Chris Kamara is a legend in Bradford. He took us to Wembley for the first (and until this year the only) time, and turned a team that was going nowhere into a promoted team within a few months. He played and managed with his heart on his sleeve, and we loved him for it. Why the animosity?

I know... you need to be a Bees fan to understand. Chris Kamara was part of the dream Brentford midfield (we've had dream defences, dream attacks and dream midfields, but sadly never all at the same time) of the early 80s of Kamara, Stan Bowles and Terry Hurlock. Think about for a minute and you'll see what a stunning midfield that was (respectively, that'd be realism, fantasy, and brute force) in the context of a third division side... as good as most in the country. Sadly, the rest of the bunch were fairly ordinary.

Anyway, Chris spent the best part of 5 seasons at the club, and was a universally well respected and well treated player. Then he left, then he went into the media, since when he has never wasted an opportunity to pour scorn on the club. Our view has been... well, if that's the way you want to play it...

Kamara in his role as a pundit has had many opportunities to spout his bile. However, he has only rarely returned to GP. To illustrate that it is not just me, but widely felt, a few years ago Sky were covering an FA Cup match and Chris was to be the expert summariser. Facilities at Griffin Park for TV commentary are rather rudimentary (a bit of scaffolding, and a ladder to climb up). So the TV gantry (ie scaffold) was just above me. Chris had just got himself settled down. Little old lady next to me (you know the sort, early 60s, marmite sandwiches, flask of tea, hubby in tow) started waving and shouting "Coo-ee, Chris... coo-eee....", at which point Kamara deigned to look down, smile on his face, probably expecting some kind words, only to be met by little old lady transformed into a figure of hate, shouting "Why do you f***ing hate us so much, you...." well I won't carry on, suffice it to say that (a) she continued with a diatribe involving words you would not expect to hear from an upstanding matron in her 60s with a hot flask in her hands and (b) her words were drowned out by an even ruder (if that was possible) chant from the neighbours in an otherwise Bovril-drinking, programme-reading part of the ground.

So, no, we don't like him because he doesn't like us.

I might be, but I was then sidetracked by reminders of Chris Kamara (my own fault, admittedly...), which trumped it.

On a further sidetrack, is it just me who is annoyed when Shrewsbury is pronounced as if there were a small furry animal involved? I'm sure someone will tell me that that is an acceptable alternative pronunciation, but I don't care. It still annoys me.

I always called it Shrows (to rhyme with throws) bury, until I met a local who called it Shrews (to rhyme with lose) bury which I've used ever since as I assumed that if a local says it that way, that's the correct way.

I don't often read this thread although what I'm about to put isn't actually a sports presenter mistake but so called wonderful technology.

I was watching the FC Porto v Benfica match in a café/bar in Porto. A massive game due to the standings etc & with the score at 1-1 & now into injury time the ball had just gone past the centre circle when suddenly a guy with earphones was celebrating a goal & then a few others joined in. Finally the tv pictures caught up & we finally saw the goal. It was only a matter of seconds but just didn't feel right.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced similar. I must admit I'm sure our delay in the UK must be a fraction quicker.

So much for 'live' football on tv.

I doubt the UK is quicker. The delay has increased since digital replaced analogue. Before the complete changeover I was watching an England game in pub where those in sight of the analogue screen saw the goals at least 3/4 seconds before those viewing the big screen.

Used to be a very good way to make a quick buck on Betfair until they increased their delay on matching bets to 8 secs Mad

... for recent Euro/World Finals tournaments; on certain nights for most late KOs, our youngest gets sent to bed and is allowed to listen to the radio upstairs.

Unfortunately the sound of his excited 'plates' thumping across his bedroom floor and down the stairs is a sure fire signal there is about to be a goal on the game we are trying to watch on Sk(h)y(pe) in the Lounge.

- we attempted to try and ban him from moving but he was always so keen to see the goal he tended to forget.

I have the distinct impression HD is possibly even further behind by a second or more.

... mind you we could try and enforce a 'talksport' only ruling - then he'd be at least as much behind the play as us - since they so rarely actually cover the game 'live' or keep up with what's going on if they can help it - even when they've been bleating all f£ckin week that they are going to Mad - particularly when 'Stan & Sam' are in the commentary box.

TheWavendonian has just texted to remind me of, back in the days when we both worked on an Isle Of Wight holiday camp during the 1994/5 season, the day we were listening to BBC Radio Solent's usually excellent half-hour non-league roundup. It went along the lines of...

Presenter: "And in the Wessex League, BAT 1 Aerostructures 1, East Cowes Vics 3 Downton 0, Ryde Sports ... er ... er ... er ... ... OH BOLLOCKS!!!"

quickly followed by the clunking sounds of a studio tape machine being kicked to a grinding halt. Getting on now for twenty years ago, and still the funniest radio I've ever heard.

He also claimed that Newport 'Town' are back in the Football League! And here's be thinking they were formed in 1989 and have never been in the Fotball League

No Football League Show tonight.
In previous seasons they have shown League 1 and 2 goals on international weekends.
Further decline in BBC coverage!

As an aside did anyone notice the number of sendings off in the FL today. Possibly refs from higher leagues interpreting the laws more strictly?

Another from Radio 5Live...

Last night, they broke off from Ukraine v. England to go over to the Luxembourg v. Northern Ireland match, where Luxembourg had just taken the lead. The commentator said:

"...and you can't not say that they don't deserve to be winning."

which I think is the exact opposite to what he actually meant.

Not a sports presenter's mistake but this year's Sky Sports Football Yearbook has a feature on Sir Alex Ferguson which his record season by season as a manager.
For the 1979-80 season with Aberdeen it gives the following league record.

P W D L F A PTS POS

46 19 10 71 61 38 48 1

This shows the absolute genius of the man. He can lose 71 games in a season yet still win the leagueSmile

Not sure they played 46 league games in a season in the Scottish Premier League either.

They've also used Celtic's Goals F & A (they were runners-up).

Mind you, it wasn't the "Scottish Premier League" back then either, it was the Scottish League, Premier Division.

Darren Fletcher on 606 is plonker of the day

A caller from Brislington , with a broad west country accent, calls about their FA Cup win over Truro City today. Fletcher goes on to make several refererences to Bridlington and trips to the seasideCrazy. Surely it should be obvious that Truro wouldn't be going to Bridlington in a regionalised draw?

Fletcher later admits he's never heard of Needham MarketMadMad

Just heard the beginning of Match of the Day 2 Extra. Welcome to Villa Park home of today's only fixture. I think Leeds United and Birmingham City might have something to say about that let alone anyone else who's playing today. Also yesterday afternoon they went for a report from Huish Park where the Championship's two most southerly clubs were playing each other. Clearly AFC Bournemouth don't count.

Not only that, he (Darren Fletcher) informed us that Port Vale's Ashley Griffiths was the capital of Montserrat, that one of the forthcoming advertised matches was to be seen on Sky Sports (that would have pleased BT immensely, I'd have thought), that the ground had only 50 seats (I'm sure the Southern League demand more than that) and that the players just play for petrol money - which may be true. And as for tired ill-researched cliches well, that's what the FA Cup is all about (said about a dozen times.

It's a bit harsh to call this stereotyping. It is factual reporting giving additional information to viewers. That's what commentators are supposed to do. I suppose they could have balanced it out by having captions describing all the Northampton players as 'footballers' (although based on their season so far that might be misleading Tongue).

Must have confused him with Plymouth! They also said that he qualified for Montserrat because of his father. This is not strictly true, as Montserrat is a Crown Colony, anyone with a UK passport can play for them, the same applies to Bermuda, Turks and Caicos Islands, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and probably Gibraltar too.
As for the 50 seats, I noticed that one stand had the TV gantry placed in front of it and was unoccupied, not sure how many seats are in the main Howard Webb stand. Apparently the Howard and Webb families have contributed a lot towards Shortwood over the years and have therefore had a stand named after them. Not a case of Manyoo fans naming the stand after one of their major benefactors.

Not actually correct, FIFA demand a residence or birth connection with the territory.
In 2000, the Cayman Islands thought of this, and tried to recruit a team without connections to the Islands before a World Cup game with Cuba. They persuaded Wayne Allison, Ged Brannan, David Barnett, Martin O'Connor, Dwayne Plummer, Barry Hayles, Neville Roach and Neil Sharpe to "sign" for them. All except Allison played for the Caymans in a friendly match against DC United, (DC won 5-0). FIFA informed them that the players were ineligible and they did not appear in any full internationals, with the exception of Barry Hayles who won ten caps with Jamaica

I don't think it's offensive that they list their jobs. It's more annoying when they describe them all as plumbers and postmen when they're not. It doesn't really bother me that people focusing on the professional leagues come out with (often inaccurate) clichés, I get more annoyed by people who know a little bit and therefore consider themselves officianados and spout all sorts of myths. A friend of mine 'loves the FA Cup because any team in England can enter'. I point out clubs local to us who cannot and she suggests I'm being ridiculous because obviously 'those are just amateur clubs - they don't count'.

A double whammy from the BBC.

Today, when ex-Altrincham striker Duncan Watmore came on as a substitute forhis debut for Sunderland, Peter Slater from BBC 5 Live announced that he was the son of Neil WHatmore, while actually he is the son of former FA chief executive Ian Watmore.

Also, yesterday, I am told that BBC Radio Lancashire mentioned that Accrington Stanley had a long trip down to Portsmouth that day, Unfortunately, it had been called off the day before.

It's just noise. They all do it; I watched ITV's execrable highlights show on Saturday night with Matt Smith (haircut from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and Gordon Strachan and "normal" Martin Allen. They blathered and blathered and I don't think any of them said anything vaguely intelligent or even intelligible. Noise, noise. And if there was 40 minutes football action in a programme lasting 90 minutes, I'm a Chinaman.
