Weatherspoons provide much better value than a lot of these coffee and sandwich shops, rip off in the highest order. Went to a place today in Chesterfield and paid 4 quid for what was basically a toastie with some chorizo in and a few piddle peppers. Never bothered with a drink. if you fancied a smoothie it would have been £3.95, would get you a decent pint or even a double short in some places. No wonder weatherspoons food with a free drink deals are so popular. Beats 7 quid for a piddly sandwich and smoothie.

After noticing in a busy JP Joule in Sale tonight that the group at the other end of our table were getting their drinks brought in by waiter service much more quickly than those of us who were trying to get served at the bar in the traditional manner, I have heard, from a member of staff, that they are told to prioritise people ordering via the Wetherspoons app.

I wasn't aware you could order a round of drinks without food on the app, nor if this policy is general, but it could be good to know, as well as being a policy to annoy a lot of people.

This seemed to be happening in the Imperial in Exeter last weekend. Hardly any staff serving those who queue at the bar.

For me, Wetherspoons pubs are like 3gG grounds. You wouldn't go in by choice but every now and then they come in handy.

The numpties in many spoons struggle to select the correct beer even when you are standing at the bar pointing at the appropriate handpull. Dread to think what you might get if ordered via an app.

It works well in my local spoons, the beer on hand pump changes frequently and is not on the app.
It's very easy to serve customers who know what they want and have already paid.

Big fan of the app, personally. We were in the Kendal branch a couple of Tuesday's ago en route to the Atherton Collieries game at Kendal Town, and there was only one person serving at the bar with a queue of 7 or 8 people. We ordered food via the app and it arrived not long after the initial 8 people had been cleared, with more joining since then. Wasn't a small order either, with three mixed grills and accompanying drinks.

Similarly, we were in the Counting House in Glasgow after the Hibs-Celtic League Cup Semi Final and those who have visited will know it's notorious for getting a seat when it's busy - ordering via the app meant we were able to retain our table whilst not having to fight our way through every time we wanted a drink. Probably supped each drink a lot quicker, mind...

I suspect it has something to do with the amount of times that people are fooled by the plethora of spoof accounts. If they say they have no social media presence then they're free of any blame.

I do feel that they don't/didn't make anywhere near enough use of social media in terms of each pub publicising any new beers, daily food specials and the like,

The Prior John in Brid will be closing soon for several weeks while it extends into the old church building next door. Hopefully it'll be a big improvement as at the moment I still prefer to travel through to Driffield to the Benjamin Fawcett for my coffee and sausage sandwich.

I'm pleased to report that London has done very well in this year's Pub Design Awards. The winners of the Conservation, Refurbishment and New Build categories are all in our region.

The conservation award has gone to The Greenwood Hotel (JD Wetherspoon) in Northolt.

Popped in here on the way to North Greenford United FC last night (note: it is also convenient for anyone heading towards Harrow Borough FC), but I’m afraid to say that it didn’t impress me nearly as much as I hoped it would.

The building itself is a handsome roadhouse style, and they’ve certainly worked hard doing up the innards - lots of space and tasteful refurbishment. But I’m afraid it was much of the same-old-same-old Wetherspoons that let the place down. First the beer: only six ales on (I though Spoons were always boasting about the huge number available?) of which Quartermaine IPA from Wimbledon Brewery was the only one that looked remotely interesting - the other five were Doom Bar (I kid you not!), London Pride and three non-descript things from Greene King. And my pint of Quartermaine wasn’t that special (though I’ll admit it was cheap).

Then the service. There are several posts further back on this thread from people saying “I went to Spoons and waited ten or fifteen minutes to get served!!” and I’ve always thought “Yeh, right, cause you did!”... And then last night it bloody happened to me, too!! But they WEREN’T serving anyone else either - after three or four minutes a barman asked “You being served?”. “No!”. “I’ll be with you soon.” then disappeared. Another five minutes he came back and went through a door in front of me. Then he came back out with the manager, they muttered, the manager then did something on the till, then looked at me, then bolted back into his bunker while the barman darted off again (it turns out one of their diners was kicking up a fuss about his microwaved soufflés or something). Another four or five minutes later, a chef came out of the kitchen and asked if I wanted serving, and then did just that! The barman eventually came back rather flustered and asked the same.

I’ve worked in pubs, catering and hospitality myself, so I realise what an unforgiving job it is. And it’s the people eating in a Wetherspoons who are always going to be the demanding customers, (though this place also had its own gang of ‘Spoons stereotype drunks propping up the bar, taking the merciless piss out of the staff at the same time, which didn’t help matters). I don’t envy them their jobs at all, but I thought this was supposed to be a flagship Spoons, and I was really hoping to be won over.

In comparison, earlier in the day I went into Beer Rebellion Micropub in unsalubrious Peckham and had the most fantastic pint of Fourpure Porter, and the bloke there running the place (who was also grafting hard at his paperwork) jumped at the chance to serve when I came in.

I know this post is a bit full of moan-moan-moan and that I don’t claim to be a Wetherspoons fan, but this is the fifth Spoons I’ve been in this year and I’m still yet to be won over: The Castle in Oxford (just about passable), Four Candles in Oxford (sub-standard), one in Aldershot (good beer, but a bit grubby), one in Cosham (totally out of control!), and now The Greenwood Hotel. Maybe I caught the place on a bad day, and all the good beer was drunk over Bank Holiday. Maybe I should give’m another chance next time I’m up that way. But now that Gareth is no longer around to ask, can anyone else please suggest a Spoons that might actually change my mind?

I think your mind is correct, but one Bank Holiday (I think New Years Day, but possibly at Easter) I pitched up at Cannon St station in London around noon to find all trains "delayed" - to my surprise I spotted a Wetherspoons on the concourse and decided to go in whilst things developed. The 3/4 staff behind the bar all moved towards me as I approached, eager to take my order. Turning round after getting my drink I noticed there were only 2 other customers in the place. When they drank up and left shortly afterwards the staff were tripping over themselves to clear the table and one of them who didn't get there in time came over to ask whether my pint was satisfactory. When I left my empty glass had been cleared from the table before I had even reached the door.

I am amazed the place was even open on a day when The City was shut and suspect the situation might be more like the usual Wetherspoon experience normally.

So Wetherspoons will no longer be selling wines and beers from France, Italy and Germany. They will replace them with drinks from the UK, Australia and South Africa in order to 'broaden our horizons' after Brexit. What a load of half-witted nonsense. There is no EU diktat forbidding the sale of drink from New World. They could have sold all of these varieties of drink before now if they had chosen so to do. Do they really think people voted to leave the EU in order to prevent continental alcohol darkening the doors of our pubs? There is clearly another agenda at work here. I suspect it is just the arch anti-European Tim Martin attempting to make a political point, although quite what it is rather defeats me.
