different chain but had good pubs was hogshead, had american 8 ball pool tables in them and had good vibe in the pubs, but alas chain is no more, what do people think of the likes of yates, Lloyds etc ? I'm sure what used to be the Yates in Oxford is now a Wetherspoons, The Four Candles. Are you sure it's not The Fork Handles!!? So the Spoons management do have a sense of humour.Possibly named after the famous Two Ronnies sketch.Didn't Ronnie Barker reside in the Oxford area ? I think he had an antiques shop in Chipping Norton. Ronnie Barker was born in Bedford but for many years of his life lived in Oxfordshire, as a youngster he lived about 100 yards from where I'm sitting typing this, a modest house at the top of Florence Park Estate which at the time he was living there would have been housing for car factory wokers many of whom were Welsh, Patrick Mower lived nearby. Ronnie Barker went to school at Oxford High School for Boys which was basically the best non fee paying school in Oxford at the time and only a couple of hundred yards from the http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/...ubs/the-four-candles After he retired he had a Anitque shop in Chipping Norton and lived in a village nearby. I met him a few times and he was a very friendly man, though slightly shy, he insisted people call him Ronnie. If you said hello Mr Barker he would say call me Ronnie, his wife Joy was / is also a very pleasant person. I did some work for him getting him mattress's and sprung bases for some Antique beds which he had that were non standard sizes.

The Four Candles was indeed named after the famous 2 Ronnies sketch and I seem to recall had Ronnie Barker Memorobillia on the walls.

As I've been sampling pints of lime and soda during this hot weather I must take cap off to Wetherspoons The New Cross Turnpike at Welling for charging me 30p. At the other end of the scale I have paid £2.30 for the same drink at the Bell & Compass at Charing X.

Popped into Weatherspoons Society Rooms in Maidstone for a quick one whilst waiting for a train, bumped into an old mate and ended up getting a (much) later train after sinking several pints of the very agreeable Tawny Owl from Cotleigh Brewery, service was a bit slow at times but otherwise all good!

opposite experience for me this week as I ticked off the Dragonfly at Birmingham Airport (landside). I know they have a captive audience but the beer choice was virtually non-existent; Ruddles or Abbot or Pedigree; last beer was chosen and it was bland....food was adequate but portions were poor; the only good thing besides the new tick was that there were more than 2 people serving!!!

The posts above from Isaac and GrumpyDwarf sum up Wetherspoons perfectly: some very good, some grim. Isaac, Cotleigh's beers are indeed marvellous. One of the very best of the first wave of new breweries from the 70s, producing beer that is of genuine class and up there with established 'old-timers' such as Timothy Taylor, Batham and Harveys.

There are now two Wetherspoon's to tick off in Stourbridge! Spoilt for choice now. Two 'Spoons' in both my hometown and university town!

Am I the only person on this forum who has never been in a Wetherspoon's? I didn't even know there were two in Stourbridge and I've lived there for 25 years.

There are now two Wetherspoon's to tick off in Stourbridge! Spoilt for choice now. Two 'Spoons' in both my hometown and university town! Doesn't that mean having to contend with four different lots of smelly old gits While wasting an hour of my life wandering around the centre of Swindon this morning, I passed a 'Spoons about noon that was doing a roaring trade with at least twenty smelly old gits sat outside already hard at it. One was the spitting image of Bruce Forsyth (but in tracky bottoms and with a flee-bitten mut on a rope for company). This 'Spoons was called 'The Savoy'. Going slightly off-topic, there is a homeless guy often sitting on the floor at Oxford bus station who looks just like Teddy Sheringham (but on hard times, and usually shirtless). Yep, that'll be him.
