English National League Division 1 South

Wightlink Raiders 4 Invicta Dynamos 4 (at Gosport)

admission £9-50 programme £2-00 (a bit overpriced) attendance over 300

These two, realistically battling for second place, battled out a 4-4 draw at Invicta last weekend, and repeated the dose here. Last weekend had more fights, otherwise this was another pretty close and well-fought game, of a good standard.
The first period was pretty even, Invicta taking the lead on 10 mins and Raiders equalising near the end of the period. This gave them momentum that they continued in the second period, two more goals putting them 3-1 up. When Osman got a 5 + match for high sticks I expected Raiders to take full advantage, but they didn't - Mos defended well, but there was a lack of killer instinct. This came back to bite them in the final period as Mos put the pressure on and three goals in eleven minutes gave them the lead. Raiders came back and Cesky equalised four minutes from the end, and despite best efforts, this was how it stayed - a fair result.
Raiders brought most of their own staff for this game, their fans travelled in numbers and Invicta had a few too. Ther were also able to watch a one-sided junior game beforehand. Raiders are hoping to stage next Sunday's game v Streatham in Ryde, they are hoping that the roof repairs will be completed by then. Before tonight they had played eight consecutive away games (this one was 'home') and did pretty well, with a 5-2-1 record.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 1 Chelmsford Chieftains 3

Admission £9-00 inc programme attendance est 180
I expected an easy win for the runaway leaders but heroic defence by Solent left the result in doubt until near the end, aided by a couple of debateable calls.
A shot count of 6-27 in the first period indicates that the visitors showed their class and started off at great speed, trying to kill the home team early. But Devils only conceded one during that period with great defending and netminding by C.Cole. In the second period Solent had a little more of the play, and looked dangerous occasionally, but still Chieftains dominated and again were denied by a great team effort. A few little frustrations beginning to surface at the end of the second.
In the third more stout defending from Solent and some good breaks. With six minutes to play a shot from Magee appeared to bounce over Clements for the equaliser and we dared to dream. Three mins later a Chelmsford player (one of the Phillips brothers Mad) clearly punched an opponent but one player from each side was sent to the bin. Shortly afterwards another home player received a harsh penalty. During this period Chieftains scored two goals to wrap the game up. An exciting game and a great effort by Devils, despite being outshot 27-68.

ENL Div 1 Sth Cup
SOLENT DEVILS 2 Streatham Redskins 5
Adm £5 (OAP) No Prog ( as ran out of Cartridges !)

Was billed as a mean less Match as Streatham had already qualified for the Semi's whilst Solent could not, however it was significant for Streatham to Win otherwise they would meet the all conquering Chelmsford in the Semi, also to have 1st pick on dates for the other Semi, likely to be Invicta.

The 1st Period went as originally thought, Goalless with each Side having 11 SOG's. The first 2.34 minutes of the 2nd settled the Game with Streatham scoring 3 unanswered Goals, before relaxing again until a defensive error allowed Solent to pull a Goal back then on an offensive Power Play lost the Puck, allowing Solent to add a 2nd. Final Period was no great shakes whilst Streatham did score twice more and then for no apparent reason Adam Wood and Mitch Murray dropped Gloves around 56 mins, both got in good hits before Murray went to Ice.

Streatham still have a League Game to play here on Easter Sunday, so another visit is possible en route on return from the SWPL Hop, unless a better Footie option appears !

English Premier League

Basingstoke Bison 4 Sheffield Steeldogs 1

admission £13-75 inc internet booking fee, programme £2-50,
attendance est 1900 (borderline sell-out, they said)
Seventh game in 14 days for Bison (and another one tomorrow). Not surprisingly they had a couple of regulars missing and weren't on top form. Steeldogs, on the other hand, were disappointing to say the least, an error-strewn game and only looking threatening once in the whole match.
Bison got an early goal then lost Greener for 5+game for high sticks. Dogs signally failed to take advantage, but defended solidly for the rest of the period. Two goals midway through the second period, one a fantastic back-flick by Long, put Bison in complete command. Midway through the third, as Bison relaxed, Dogs pulled one back and for five minutes, including a power play, they had Bison worried. But a penalty of their own took the pressure off, and an empty-netter near the end sealed the win. A few elbows and some whinging showed their frustration.
Defeat for the Phantoms at Swindon means this was an important win for Bison - 6 pts ahead with 2 games more played (2 pts for a win).
A couple of new stadium rules - headgear must be removed for the national anthem, and 'suggestive hand gestures' are banned Wink. Wonder what prompted that?

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 7 Milton Keynes Thunder 3

Admission £9-00 inc programme attendance est 100
Solent move closer to sixth place, currently occupied by Thunder, with this win. Thunder beat Streatham yesterday and iced a full team and three players that are two-way with EPL Lightning. Today they only iced nine outfield players plus NM Caminsky.
The game was played at a fast pace throughout with some good hits and good moves, and very few penalties.
Devils took the lead on 10 mins and extended it five mins later as Circensis skated from his own blue line to slot home. Thunder had their chances but found Cole in good form.
The second period started in crazy fashion, five goals in five and a half minutes. Devils scored two in a minute to go 4-0 up and we wondered if Thunder were in for a thrashing. But the home defence went to sleep twice in 90 secods and the MK deficit was back to two again. Stright down the other end and Brown completed his hat-trick for Solent, and the best move of the game saw Magee make it 6-2 after 30 mins. MK held on for the remainder of the period, but one wondered what would happen when they inevitably tired in the third.
In fact the third period was tied at 1-1, Solent didn't let up but Thunder battled superbly and had the better of it. Wild scored for Solent early on but the puck came out throigh a hole in the net, the referee, despite finding the hole (having only checked the nets at the start of the match) having the disallow the goal. No matter, Wild scored again six minuites later. A hideous defensive error gave Thunder a deserved third goal, and they kept going until the end.

DEL Bundesliga
2/3/16 1930 start Att 8041 Lanxess Arena Free team sheet (very poor) bi-monthly magazine available. Adm 25 euros plus 1 euro per ticket booking fee. Tickets picked up outside arena at ticket booth as we booked online.

Very cheesy pre game entertainment (!!) with Koln Sharks anthem (you could sing along as the words were on the screen Smile) and a 3D light show. Even the loony Sharks mascot put in an appearance!!

Kolner Haie 3 v EHC Red Bulls Munchen 4

A fairly good to and fro game - 7 goals being swapped around and Munchen winning the game with around 6 minutes left. Munchen were top of the league with Koln probably not making the play offs so we didn't know quite what to expect. Seats were high up with a good view but the prices at the kiosks were extortionate - at €4.20 for a 0.5l Fanta which is typical of any sports arena I suppose.

Good evening had by both of us.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 5 Oxford City Stars 4

Admission £9-00 inc programme attendance est 130
Devils went up to 6th after a an exciting over the Redskins last night (which was worth double points). Tonight they beat the team directly above them in another thriller. Stars are the most improved team in the league this season.
The first period was fast and furious and Devils ended it two goals to the good after some good attacking play.
Stars got one back right at the start of the second, went 3-1 behind soon after, but then proceeded to take the lead with three goals, two of which home netminder Cole will want back, despite an overall good night. Devils' performance was less intense than in the first and they paid for it.
Devils ramped up the volume again in the final quarter, equalising after 12 seconds of it and going ahead with 9 minutes to play. The game got even more intense with lots of penalties and a fight between A.Cole and Green - Devils survived a 3 v 5 near the end too. But when Pekarik, 3 goals and 22 penalty minutes tonight, got his final 2+10 with 40 seconds to go, the home team were home and dry.
Devils now must play Wightlink away on both Thu and Sat, and Cardiff on Sun. The Streatham game on the 27th has now been cancelled due to yesterday's double points game. I said at the start of the season that the fixture list was pretty messy, it's got even worse.
Congratulations to the Bison too - first EPL title for 23 years confirmed tonight!

English Premier League

Guildford Flames 2 Telford Tigers 6

admission £12-55 with booking fee
, programme downloadable via internet, attendance est 1605
Tigers were disappointing last season, have strengthened the squad this summer (Clarkson and Davies were very good tonight), and are my tip to win the League.
This was their third win in a row so far. Flames haven't started the season as well, have gaps in certain areas of the team, but still had three points out of four until tonight.
Flames didn't help themselves - Kristofferson at the start, and Kralj at the end, both got 5+match for high sticks. The first period was fairly even, with a good bundle after 14 mins after home netminder Ullberg got a late hit. Just after it the visitors took the lead through Clarkson. Flames had their best spell at the start of the second period and equalised on a power play. But around the half hour mark they were blown away by three goals in two minutes, again, just after a fight, Clarkson beating Myers impressively. Flames tried hard to come back but Tigers held them off fairly comfortably. Each side got a goal in the final period, then Tigers got a sixth after Kralj's departure.
A good atmosphere at the Spectrum tonight, shame the home fans (kids free) went home disappointed.

Saturday 17th September
Elite League Challenge Cup
Belfast Giants 3-1 Edinburgh Capitals
Attendance 4000 est - 7200 capacity Odyssey Arena looked just over half full
Ticket £17 - was told the club no longer issue programmes

Made a spur of the moment decision to attend my first ever Ice Hockey match when seeing fans in Giants shirts walking towards the Odyssey Arena after taking a walk to the Titanic Quarter following the football at Glentoran. Ticket said it was an Elite League match but only realized that wasn't the case when the PA announcer said it was a Challenge Cup game, group stage rather than knockout this early in the season. After a scoreless first period the hosts scored two goals at the start and finish of the second, both coming from American Mike Forney - most players on show were from USA or Canada, not enough British players of a high enough standard? The visitors finally got on the scoresheet with 1:19 remaining in the last period, then dispensed with their goalkeeper/net minder in favour of an extra outfield player as they went in search of a leveller which presumably would have taken the game to overtime, but were caught on the break with the hosts securing victory with a shot into the empty net. Disappointingly there no fights broke out between the players which I thought was part and parcel of the gameCool.

The Odyssey is an impressive arena with 14 rows of black padded seats around 3 sides, the end without seats has a stage where the cheerleaders perform. The atmosphere was good and there was a dedicated singing section for the noisiest fans in the top corner.
On the whole I enjoyed my first experience of Ice Hockey but thought the player turnover was too high, on numerous occasions all ten outfield players were replaced at once only to all be replaced themselves within a minute, do they have different teams for Offense and Defense like in American Football? The interval between each period was excessively long lasting almost 20 minutes each which would be OK if they had just one half time.

Cardiff Devils 6 Coventry Blaze 3

Sat 24 Sept 2016 face off 7pm
Challenge Cup, Group Phase
Attn c. 2200 admit £12 prog £3

My first visit to Ice Arena Wales and it is a lot more comfortable than the Finnish Blue Tent which was the venue when I last watched Cardiff Devils eight seasons ago. It is in the same area though, down the redeveloped Ferry Road area somewhere near where the Red House pub used to be (gents impassable at high tide). Nowadays there's a large, free, car park as well as loads of flats and a Morrison's. The latter would be worth visiting if you are having a busy day spectating as the food and drink choices inside the Arena looked exclusively industrial.

I cannot pretend to be well informed on this sport, my visit being perfectly timed to fit in with a family taxi service home from the Great Welsh Beer Festival.

The whole set up here is rather Canadian ( pity the pub of the same name is now closed), with the owners, most of the players and the announcer all being from Canada. Made quite an impression of North American sport too, which I enjoyed as I have now come to realise that I am never likely to see Baffin Blizzard play at home. Tried very hard to come up with ideas to fill in the inter-period brakes, we had Zorb Football (on ice!), as well as puck chucking. There were also various raffles.

Most of the crowd spent a lot of time earing and drinking, which too seems to be a North American trait. Seemingly aimed at a family audience, I cannot explain the reaction to the violence that erupted in the third period.A very savage dichotomy.........

Could prove to be a rather negative Season for Hockey, especially with the News advised tonight that Isle of White Raiders have been locked out of their Arena due unpaid debts and without access to their Equipment. Perhaps Hants Londoner can advise further detail ?

At Streatham Redwings tonight, Redskins are no more due political correctness, as suggested by the local Council !

First visit due being abroad for two of the first 3 weekends, to be greeted by a very small crowd ! Possibly 50 o/o down on last year and then a very poor performance from the Redwings. Wiggins has missed the last 3 weeks due to a broken skate blade. Apparently not readily available in his size !

Neither side had a back up Goalie, in fact Thunder had only 12 Skaters, although all were decent Players and put in a very good performance. So good that by the half way stage led 3-0 and fully deserved, before Redwings scored on 36.22 to promise a come back.

Still Redwings failed in their efforts to get back in the Game before adding a 2nd on 50.58. With Thunder looking tIred it was not until the last minute when Redwings pulled their Keeper to secure an equaliser on 59.39 to finish 3-3.

Thunder played the better but some credit to Redwings for their fightback.

Previous evening had attempted to see Cardiff Devils at their new 3,200 capacity Arena, only to be met with a Sold Out sign !

Only previous Game seen was at Milton Keynes Thunder where I felt a disappointing attendance for a Club hoping to join the big Boys next Season, especially as having won all their previous six Games, with a crowd of around 66 o/o of capacity. I paid £11 for a concession, very fair although a regular advised that as they had increased prices for this Season, Crowds were down. Game I saw was to be their first defeat , 1-4 to Guildford.

Isle of Wight are the innocent victims of a dispute between the trust that runs the rink and the firm who own the lease. They will be collecting their kit today however it is far from certain that the rink will survive.

Re Streatham, I doubt the council had anything to do with it. The club have come under pressure a few times, not least during the planning application stage for the current rink, but refused to change name. There had been a subtle re-branding going on with Streatham not the head logo appearing on the shirt etc. My understanding is that key figures in the club felt the name was problematic and given the lack of kick back to the subtle rebrand proceeded to drop the suffix. The are now formally Streatham Ice Hockey Club, their traditional name.

As a Streatham regular in the early 90's who is now uncle to two Comanche Indians I welcome the decision.

Comment on Raiders duly noted, however do we know if Away games are to be played as per schedule ? Doubtful if no Home income being received ,

As to Streatham, you know as much as me, however in my opinion the Redskins tag was dropped as the Council who own the Rink remained unhappy ! Certainly the long standing regulars were against the change. Still to get on one must compromise !

If you are interested in the background to the change Joe Johnston wrote some impressive articles in the how/why/other potential names considered and so on. They are well worth a read and were on their website. There were regulars both for and against the change, inevitable really.

Re Raiders we just don't know. If ice tine is available at Gosport they may try to get through (if IoW doesn't re-open) but clearly the finances would be challenging so there must be a chance the club will fold. Obviously there are junior teams to consider as well etc

Sat 8th October 2016
EIHL North 2 (Laidler Conference) (Level 4)
Blackburn Eagles 12 Bradford Bulldogs 2
Att: 150 (est)
Admission £5 (kids £1)
Programme/Raffle £2.50 (20pp, decent effort but a little overpiced)

Blackburn's second team this morning sit top of their league with a played 6 won 6 record, completely unheard of for a team that for many years were barely competitive, let alone be play off qualifying material. Having predictably seen off Bradford on Saturday they duly won 5-3 at Widnes last night (the other team with a 100% record) to sit top of the league.

Interest in them is on the up for despite the Hawks being away at Telford at he same time there were still a good 150 or so watching at the fridge and they provided good entertainment against an understrength Bradford side who to be fair, never stopped playing despite the scoreline (and only having 11 skaters).

I think most posts above represent what is currently known about the Ryde Ice arena.

The local paper had a good article yesterday:
http://www.iwcp.co.uk/...-of-wight-96421.aspx

There is an online petition but at present a lot of people are assuming the worst.

IOW Buccaneers played their game at Swindon at the weekend.

And this tweet appeared today from Invicta:
GAME ON! Saturday's away game v @wightlinkraider is ON but will take place at Gosport with faceoff at 7pm.

So... Sat 15 Oct 1900 at Gosport. I'll probably try and go to that.
I saw IOW v Invicta last season too at Gosport after the storm had put Ryde out of action. Pretty good crowd on that night (see my report).

I see on the EIHA website that Raiders have also got Oxford City Stars booked for Gosport on Sat 22 Oct at 1900.

National League Division 1 South Cup

Wightlink Raiders 7 Invicta Dynamos 3 (at Gosport)

admission £10-00 programme £2-00 (still a bit overpriced) attendance est 180
Both teams 100% record in the Cup, Raiders also undefeated in the league, but hadn't trained for two weeks before this match due to lack of ice.
Fast start, both teams going at it, kept up for most of the game. Mos took the lead on 10:41 but Cesky equalised 20 secs later. They took the lead from the blue line with 1:40 to play and, crucially, Cesky (again) extended it with 4.8 secs to play in the first period,
Same in the second period, Mos again scoring first (Rehak) but Raiders coming back quickly so 4-2 at the end. In the third Mos yest again scored first, a powerful shot from Zosiak just getting past Colclough, but Raiders again coming good, this time with three goals, one on the powerplay, one a classic break, to complete a satisfying win. Wasn't impressed with the netminding tonight, lots of rebounds, although Colclough came good in the third period. King didn't.
Not much more news from Ryde: locals formed a ring round the rink in protest last week, the council are concerned about the situation (but can't do much about it) and the players remain as one, hoping to stick it out until the situation is resolved in their favour (if it is). Next Sat's game against Oxford at Gosport confirmed. Planet Ice apparently very helpful in trying to accommodate Raiders.
Gosport rink has been refurbished over the summer; new flooring/seating surfaces, new boards around the rink, and new sound system so we can hear that crap music just that bit better. As with the last time they were here, Raiders staff running the show tonight.

The company/trust running Ryde Arena appears to have ceased trading.

Wightlink Raiders' game v Oxford tomorrow (Sat) at Gosport 1900 is apparently unaffected.

But obviously it's another blow to hockey on the Island.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 1 Streatham 3

Admission £9-00 no programme (*) attendance est 200

Devils won 4-2 in Streatham yesterday, their first win there ever. Given their roster, the visitors definitely underperforming this season but this evening they were back to impressive ways in an excellent, rather tasty match.
Probably some afters from Saturday - first fight after 3 mins, M.Murray v Fisher (draw) soon followed by a Wiggins elbow, 2+10. Devils battled hard but were unable to make much headway against the visitors, who looked comfortable with and without five outfield players on the ice. They took the lead midway through the first period and could maybe have had more.
Devils came back well in the second period and we had an exciting game of hockey. The equaliser came four mins in, off NM King's shoulder, and it was end-to end for the rest of the period. Near the end Wiggins beat Facey in another fight.
In the third the visitors regained their ascendancy, it all boiled over six mins in as more scuffles led to several players being in the penalty box at one. The box at Gosport is quite small with no divide between the teams, and this time the scuffles continued, with M.Murray getting a match penalty for allegedly throwing beer cans at the Streatham playersShocked. On the powerplay Streatham took the lead again, Oravec getting his second with a shot from the right across NM C.Cole who may be disappointed with it. After that the visitors had things well in control, with 1:08 to play Devils pulled their NM, eight seconds later an empty-netter made it 1-3 and all over.
As described in my Wightlink report a week ago, some refurbishments at the Gosport rink this season, this time I even noticed a bar selling bottles of lager. Hard to spot, it's just left of the cafe in what appears to be in a locker room.
(*) no programme tonight because 'due to Wightlink's demise they didn't know what future fixtures were going to be when'.Crazy

Probably the final post about Wightlink Raiders for a while:

Coach Jeremy Cornish and several players from the defunct Raiders have now joined Streatham.
Chinn and Wiggins, the ex-Basingstoke connection, have left Streatham, together with some other players. Definitely an upgrade for Streatham.

Also a footnote to the Solent v Streatham match I reported on last Sunday: the Hockey Forum has a thread which might explain why Devil's Mitchell Murray went off on one and started throwing beer cans (and bottles) at his opponents who were also in the penalty box.
Not nice if true (you may need to sign in to see this):

Manchester Phoenix are seemingly playing several, if not all, of their games this season at Fylde Ice Arena in Blackpool. Handy, if like me, you never managed to get there when Fylde Coast Flyers were in existence.

It's not the same rink. Fylde Flyers played at Cleveleys which has now gone. It's a trampoline park Now! Fylde Coast Ice Arena is at Bispham in North Blackpool and is in part of the old TVR sports car factory. Spectator facilities are minimal but the ice pad and scoreboard are very good.
