Proper record shops Can't Post or Reply Privately

As someone who has totally missed the supposed 'music revolution' of the past ten years, and still buys their music in physical form from a shop, the end of HMV leaves me wondering how difficult its going to be to buy records in the future. I do buy as much of my music as I can from independent record shop, but I'm still going to miss HMV when they go.

In the light of the 'proper pubs' thread, I think it a good idea to start a thread dedicated to proper record and music shops, particularly any that are near to football grounds and can be reached easily while hopping.

I'll start off with:

Truck Store, 101 Cowley Road, Oxford
When I moved to Oxford in 2002, there were eight record shops in a city dedicated to student life. If HMV folds, this will be the last one left. Strong links with the Truck Music Festival in Steventon every July, and regularly has live acts performing in the shop.

Also...

Rapture Entertainment, Market Square, Witney

Rapture Entertainment, 24 Riverside Centre, Evesham

Collectors Record Centre, 54 Old London Road, Kingston-On-Thames
Lots of vinyl, and on the way from Kingston town centre to AFCWimbledon/KingstonianFC.

Rough Trade East, Dray Walk, just off Brick Lane, east London
Big old place, plenty of choice, and you might bump into Don Quixote in the 'Frank Sinatra' section!

There was a fantastic record shop in Croydon called Beanos but having had a few stays of execution it closed a few years back.

I don't know any others off hand.

There's a shop called Sound It Out in Stockton that featured in a documentary on the BBC a couple of months ago... http://www.sounditoutrecords.co.uk/ .

The shop also hosts gigs despite its modest size... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYP-hn7Ut9g

Another here who needs 'tangible' product. No interest in downloading, I'm not a luddite but do find technology daunting and a little soulless.

Swordfish Records, Birmingham A couple of minutes from New Street station. I don't frequent the second city anymore, but I believe this is the only record shop remaining.

Sister Ray, Soho, London A marmite/beetroot of a record shop, I do't no many who like but I loved the old shop before they merged with / took over Selectadisc. Still bought no end of obscurities from both.

I found an excellent second hand record shop in Haverhill , the day of Rovers last ever game at Hamlet Croft. A quick search on google suggest the owner (if the same store) won the Euromillions jackpot!!!!

A brief mention of some great shops lost forever

Kriminal Records - Bletchley
Oven Ready - Aylesbury
Selectadisc - Soho
Spinadisc - Northampton

The Rock Box , 151 London Road, Camberley. It's been there since 1987 and has constantly evolved to keep up with the times.

http://www.rockbox.co.uk/

There's also 101 Collector's Records, 101 West Street, Farnham. http://www.djforcex.co.uk/101/

I'm not sure if SpinnaDisc in Aldershot is still open. I heard it had to shut due to a flood from the flat upstairs ruining all the stock.

Regarding HMV, the latest announcement came the same day as Rough Trade released their last quarter's figures. Their sales were up 8% on the same period last year and they say they're busier than they've ever been. Vinyl sales in the UK are up again for the fifth year running and the majority of music is still bought in physical formats so they don't have much sympathy with HMV, blaming their demise on a poor retail experience and the company not knowing what to sell. What's worse is that HMV can get their stock in cheaper than the independents but still manage to get it wrong.

A blog from a couple of weeks ago - http://www.danlesac.co.uk/...maybe-hmv-goes-boom/

HMV didn't seem to want to sell music for the past two years anyway. At least not to anyone who would go to a music shop for it. Several hid anything beyond the mainstream away upstairs or at the back and kept most bizarre back catalogues. The comments on VP's post above ring true with me. Trying to compete with the supermakets for the latest X factor releases whilst marginalising real Music fans and collectors was never going to be a winning business case. Still sad though, I think we had a thread a few months ago with people reminiscing about their HMV moments...

I have already mentioned on here before:

Raves From the Grave - Warminster and Frome. Real proper record shops. great back catalogue and selection, also collectors vinyl etc. They also stock a lot of DVDs and I have found DVDs in there that HMV didn't have, hence why I gave up on HMV.

Theres also Sound Knowledge in Marlborough, although a bit more mainstream and without the collectables.

TBH the demise of HMV will only help these kind of stores.

I've a load of old vinyl in my shed, getting more and more damp and warped each day. I sold what I thought was the rarer/more valuable stuff on eBay a few years ago, but couldn't be bothered with the rest as it was becoming such a pain in the arse putting it on there and packaging it all up for the sake of making 20p, or lugging it all to the car-boot sale and lugging it all back again. If anyone wants it, or wants more info, then feel free to pm me and if you can come and collect it then it's yours for free (it's all or nothing mind)! There's probably at least a couple of hundred each of 7" and 12" singles, and the odd album, mainly 80s/early 90s chart pop stuff and a bit of indie.

First come, first served.

I used to frequent Spillers as a student. There also used to be several good record shops in Swansea (spent much of my grant in Musicquarium and More Music), but I think the only one still going is:

Why don't you put them on eBay as a job lot? I used to have 6-7000 records which I've been selling on eBay after digitising them. It's taken nearly eight years so far but I'm getting there. I sell most records individually but anything that doesn't sell or I don't think will sell I put in a job lot. When I get to about 300 records I list them in one lot as pick up only. Job done.

There's one in Waltham Cross but I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head.

Regarding HMV, like all companies they got too big for their boots, lets go back to how it was, one big store in Oxford Street that stocked everything. If you wanted something in particular you went there.

I've never been to any record shop that has stocked all that I want. Unlike most music buyers I don't do all that x factor shite so it's always a struggle to find outlets that stock the kind of stuff I like, particularly since John Peel died and I, like so many others, lost a vital barometer as to the decent new stuff available.

As Steve B correctly mentions Piccadilly Records is a sure fire winner and I spend way too much money with them, but you will get laughed out of the shop if you want crap like Muse, Kings of leon etc. Vinyl Exchange is across the road and purely for the second hand market, I also incidentally spend far too much money in there as well.
Action Records in Preston is fantastic, Grey n pink Records in Chester is top draw, head down to london and Rough Trade (East) plus 2 or 3 decent ones on berwick st is Soho (Sister Ray is one). Also shout outs for Probe in Liverpool, small but thorughly enjoybale experience in that shop.

HMV have done little or nothing for the independents so good riddance, although I do feel sympathay for distributors and the affected workforce in the actual shops, as this will clearly be a body blow for them.

Fopp (who HMV bought out I believe) are decent for a chain in fairness, good one in Manchester and Glasgow, not sure what if anything the HMV issue impacts on Fopp

Oh and nearly forgot, Spillers in Cardiff, awesome

The physical format will continue to grow as a niche market now and ask anyone working at piccadilly records about their business in the last few years and its clearly been on an upward curve.

Punky with all soundclouds, youtubes and soundbites available there is no excuse not too find out new or previously unheard acts. You dont appear to be very far fom a keyboard so whats stopping you. X factor and mainstream shite has nowt to do with it as any good independent shop or mail order would not contemplate selling that crap which is a) why popular music fans download and b) why hmv have gone tits up

My time online is somewhat misleading as although I'm often logged in I just snatch what time I can at the keyboard between work and other stuff.

You're right about the amount of good music that's out there but whereas you knew when JP was going to be on and you could listen in these days it's a case of searching for good new music and I don't often have the time.

Nevertheless, I've been pointed in the right direction and I'm grateful for that.

If you took in Marc Riley last night you'd have heard blasts from the past from Killing Joke & Jonathan Richman, plus a whole load of new stuff not aired on other stations. I like Riley as he doesn't really go down the obvious Muse, Kings of Leon route that other presenters are keen on.

I used to get collectables from Adrians years ago! Nice to know they are still going.

As to Radio, I have a huge issue with the BBC over this. Radio 2 was actually becoming quite interesting for a while until they decided it was taking too many listeners off Radio One and put some ban on playing too many new releases. Then they decided "too many dads" listened to Radio One, so appear to have banned them playing anything that appeals to anyone with a mental age of over 8.

That leaves anyone between the ages of 8 and 58 with nothing but "Heart"! yet within that age group are those very people, who grew up with pop music as a key part of their life, who are driving the boom is physical media sales....

Digital Radio is all very well, but largely isn't available in cars as yet, and thats where I listen to Radio most, and I doubt I am alone in that.

It's not necessarily the presenters being keen on things - they have limited playlists so have to pretend to like stuff. Very few djs have free range to play what they want. Radio 6 probably has more than most stations though. Bands need to find out these things so they know who to send records / cds to. There's no point sending stuff to a dj who's not allowed to play your record.

They were given ideas a year ago how to save their company. They met the writer of this blog and told him he was wrong. He's probably worked in the music industry longer than the HMV staff he met...

As I mentioned earlier, Rough Trade are booming. Now HMV are gone they're talking on Twitter about opening more shops around the country.

A number of posts on here have referred to it, both vinyl and CD sales have increased over recent years. HMV just wan't interested. I am sure they had their own reasons but chasing after the most congested and competitive market sectors was a strategy doomed to failure, which is indeed what has happened. Why go to HMV for a chart CD when its on sale at your local Tesco let alone available on Amazon?

Some Numpty at work put KISS FM on yesterday. It was even worse than Radio 1 for mindless dance music and even more repetitive than Heart.
One 'song' was played 3 times in 6 hours and I gave up counting at 7 Rhianna tracks.

Sounds dreadful. Heart actually use tapes. I go to a gym where it is constantly on, and after Whacko Jacko died the same sequence of songs was on each time I went in (I was going at the same time each night) for about two weeks. Their DJ's must have such an easy job!

I saw part of the xmas "Top of The Pops" whilst in a pub. Although a lot of it was to me rubbish, I did notice that everyone played/sang live, and I won't knock that, until we got to what I assume was some X Factor shit that was the number one. This clown couldn't even mime properly and got out of sync a couple of times to the backing track. There was no pretence that it was a live performance. Sometimes I despair that people are sucked in by this...

I believe they are part of musicmagpie and sell second hand CD's called replays.

I haven't seen a Fopp for a few years but I used to frequent the one in Edinburgh just off Royal Mile in the 80s. I think that was one of the original branches. Much more focussed on later years than HMV, despite being owned by them, though I have never seen one outside Scotland.

Backin the 70`s there used to be decent record shops in Crowthorne (Got my first ever records there) and Sandhurst. Sometimes went up to The Vintage Record Shop at Caledonian Road for Oldies and imports, got some Rare Stones singles there, now all gone (The Record shops not the stones singles).

who are driving the boom is physical media sales

You should tell HMV about this boom. They would be really pleased to hear about it.

Indeed. Physical music down about 30% in the first six months of 2012.

Vinyl sales, I believe, were up in 2012 but from such a pitifully small base as not to be really significant.

I wouldn't really call Kiss a dance station. It has sadly become an urban version of a pop music station, cutting/editing songs to death. So repetitive. A pale shadow of how I remember it in the early/mid 90s.

Agree about Heart as well, playing poor music variety, aimed at thirty something dummy mummies who think the capital of Spain is Gibraltar, and whose knowledge of 80s music extends as far as the Dirty Dancing and Footloose soundtracks. All the while these radio asset strippers con their gullible listeners into thinking they are still listening to their local station previously known as Fox, Broadland etc, when all but breakfast and drive and weekend afternoons come from London.

Thank goodness I still keep my eclectic music selections and burnt them onto CD's over the years. Beats the homogenous radio we have these days, a far cry from the days when I would listen to Essex Radio or Radio 1 and constantly hear something slightly left field.

Must go back to Adrians now...

Visited the one in Northampton for the first time, didn't realise they were second-hand as the cd's are sold in good condition. I did wonder how come they had so many deleted 90's 'indie albums' selling at 3 for a fiver.

I'm not convinced that 'proper' record shops should worry about this chain, although there were plenty of 'gems' to be had they really cater for the mainstream market. There was loads of metal in this store btw.

I bought Echobelly's ON album at the Leicester 'Thats Entertainment' for 99p. It's absolutely brilliant and I've since bought their first album for £1.99 from one of their shops. The 1990's are my favourite era for music. Also brought CDs by Garbage,Lush,Saint Etienne and the Sundays. Didn't have to pay more than £1.99 for any of them.

Excellent purchases JR.

I spent £11 in Northampton Saturday and bought

Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
Boo Radleys - C'mon Kids
Deejay Punk-Roc- Chickeneye
Northern Uproar - Northern Uproar
Super Furry Animals - Out Spaced
Young Knives - Superabundance

and Alfie (the original one) on DVD.

Money well spent. Also visited CEX in Walsall during the ice and snow and picked up 9 albums for £8.20 including REM, The Sundays, Verve etc.

I'm looking forward to this period of cd buying before they become obsolete.

Found a good independent record shop recently, The Groove, at 14 Reading Road, Henley-On-Thames (it used to be called 'Henley Records' and was further down the road past the railway station). Plenty of both new and second hand vinyl records, and they run a regular music pub quiz at the Bird In Hand pub.

Further up the same street, close to the main crossroads in the centre of Henley, is a particularly good Oxfam Music & Book Shop. Obviously charity shops by their nature can be abit hit-or-miss, but the Henley Oxfam one seems to conjure up gems on a regular enough basis.

That's Entertainment also have a website which has a massive stock. I managed to buy a CD by the Braziian singer Marisa Monte. All in Portuguese but terrific anyway.
They add £1 for postage but delivery times are pretty quick. Not sure why a CD costs £1 postage, but a football or Rugby ticket costs £2.50 usually despite the fact it is lighter and the item is classed as a letter rather than a large letter.

Turns out that the giant HMV on Oxford Street in London, which was apparently the largest record shop in the world, has closed. It closed back in mid-January, though I didn't realise this until pressing my nose up against the window when passing yesterday evening. Apparently, their main shop is now the one further west, at 363 Oxford Street (near Bond Street underground station).

Also: HMV in Cornmarket, Oxford, is also in the process of closing down, with a 10% off clearance sale thats been running since news broke about a month ago. Closing day is set for late March, unless they can find new premises.

Better news: here are the details of the brilliant Sound Machine Record Shop in Reading town centre (not yet mentioned on this thread). They're at 24 Harris Arcade, just down from the main railway station.

I've walked past Ben's in Guildford loads of times but haven't been in it for years. I always seem to be in a rush when I'm in Guildford. I forgot about that shop in Reading as well. Went there a couple of times years ago. It was great. As it's still there I'll have to have a nose one day.
I recently got told about Langley Records in Molesey, 30 seconds away from the football club, that I didn't know existed. I've always entered the ground from the Hampton Court end so never passed the shop.
Camberley are playing there in April so I'll give it a go.

Also, vinyl sales figures for 2013 are encouraging.

Quote:

"Vinyl continues its revival, with just over 780,000 LP albums sold in 2013, Official Charts Company figures reveal - up 101 per cent on 2012 and over 270 per cent on five years ago.
This is the largest annual total in over 15 years (in 1997 817,000 LP units were sold). Vinyl 7" singles were up 34 per cent on last year and sales of 12" singles rose 60 per cent on 2012.
The vinyl format, whilst still popular with some baby-boomers, increasingly also appeals to an engaged audience of younger artists and consumers alike, who appreciate its iconic heritage as part of Rock and Pop culture. The format's profile and sales have also been driven by the success of annual events such as Record Store Day. "

http://www.bpi.co.uk/...-growth-in-2013.aspx

I have to say I'm seeing a lot more 12" record shaped packages at work these days and more and more of the current crop of punk and alternative bands and labels are putting out vinyl versions of their releases. I even bought a new, limited edition cassette one band put out a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if my cassette player still works!

Sad news....

Focus Sounds, an independent record shop run by Steve Butler in Waterlooville, has closed after forty-one years of trading. I used to shop there alot when I was at college nearby in the early and mid-eighties, and worked in an off-licence in the same parade of shops.

A great shame to hear it has closed. A regular is quoted: "I was gutted when I found this out. Good luck to Steve and a big thank-you for unknowingly providing the soundtrack to my youth."

The days when HMV could be regarded as a 'proper record shop' may well be way back in the past now, but its still sad to report that their shop in the centre of Oxford closed for good last Wednesday.

Twelve years ago, Oxford had over a dozen good record shops. Now there is just one, the excellent Truck Store, 101 Cowley Road.

In today's Oxford Times....

"If Vinyl Floats Your Boat, Then He's Your Man

If collectable vinyl floats your boat then Luke Guilford's river record store will be worth a visit. The 39-year-old quit his London job as a librarian earlier this year to run The Record Deck from his boathouse.

His journey brought him to Oxford last week, where he moored up at the towpath beside Hythe Bridge Street.

The Record Deck, which has travelled through London and Birmingham since June, will be moored in Cropredy this week for the village's annual folk festival, Fairport's Cropredy Convention."

Any record shops in particular? Any of the 50 or so mentioned so far in this thread? Or is that just a sweeping and shallow generalisation of no depth or substance?

For a more positive outlook, here's another ten excellent independent record shops (listed in last Saturday's Guardian), packed with brilliant music and staffed by wonderful hardworking music-lovers:

Carnival Records
83 Church Street, Malvern, Worcestershire

Holt Vinyl Volt
1 Cromer Road, Holt, Norfolk

Groucho's
132 Nethergate, Dundee, Tayside

Spillers
21 Morgan Arcade, Cardiff

(quite rightly mentioned several times before, and reputedly the oldest record shop in the world)

And for the next hop abroad...

Plattfon Record Store
Feldbergstrasse, Basel, Switzerland

12 Tonar
Skolavoroustigur 15, Reykjavik, Iceland

Dischi Caru
Piazza Garibaldi 6, Gallarate, Lombardy, Italy

Freebird Records
15a Wicklow Street, Dublin, Eire

Coffee & Vinyl
Volkstraat 45, Antwerp, Belgium

Aquarius Records
1055 Valencia Street, San Francisco, USA

Anyone here visited any of these?

I must give mention to Hinckleys own independent record shop-Nervous Records,The Lawns,Hinckley.
Set up in 1978 I first became aware of it a couple of years later.
It's had the same owner,a gent by the name of Gordon Hayes, for all those years.
If you're ever in the area check it out.
It has its own facebook page 'Nervous Records Hinckley' should you wish to view photos.

Another for the list...

Many thanks to Richiejenn for the recommendation of The LP Cafe, 173 The Parade, Watford, which TheWavendonian and myself visited on Saturday afternoon before ticking Sun Postal FC. Not only do they stock a good selection of vinyl, they also serve excellent carrot cake and large pots of tea! The cafe is also a regular hang-out for a local mod scooter club, meaning a gorgeous collection of Lambrettas and Vespas sat on the pavement outside. Well worth a visit.

While in London on Saturday, I popped into Fopp Records, 1 Earlham Street, London (close to the junction of Shaftsbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road, a couple of minutes up from Leicester Square underground station), always a good place to pick up cheap CDs.

On the ceiling, they've printed the message:

"Vinyl is killing MP3 downloads!" Wink

Managed to blow some hard-earned cash on more vinyl in Brighton while on the way to ticking Lewes FC recently. The North Laine area of Brighton (just five minutes stroll down the hill from the main railway station) is packed with good pubs, loads of junk shops and several excellent record shops, including...

Across The Tracks Records
110 Gloucester Road, Brighton

Resident Records
28 Kensington Gardens, Brighton

http://www.resident-music.com

Across The Tracks is a proper old treasure trove of new and second-hand vinyl, and is the sort of place you could easily waste a quality afternoon sifting through. Resident Records (which as recently expanded its premises) is a little more slick, polished and (as a result) a bit more expensive, but still a worthy shop to visit.

I was in Dunbar on the weekend and noticed there was an independant record store in the main St. https://www.facebook.com/...hop/1570919196481735
I don't know if it's any good but if any record hunters are passing on the A1 they could pop in !
Apparantly there is one in North Berwick too, although I didn't actually see that one even though I spent a lot of time in North Berwick on the weekend, mainly on the beach or in The Ship Inn http://www.50mls.co.uk/ship-inn/ or Zitto's !

Have just spent a couple of days on the furthest western edge of Herefordshire in Kington, where I spent a rewarding couple of hours sifting through the contents of...

Alpha Antiques & Emporium
45 High Street
Kington
Herefordshire

...a little shop packed-full of old stamp collections, coins, books, lots of old 60s and 70s league football programmes and books (particularly, and unsurprisingly, plenty of old Hereford United FC stuff, but I also saw several complete Panini sticker books from the late 70s), trinkets, and best of all a room out the back packed with old vinyl. What with Kington Town FC being a good tick, this shop is a worthwhile visit if you're heading to the Mill Street ground. Some decent ale at a couple of the town's pubs, too.

Not a record shop, but on returning to Hereford by bus, I popped into...

Magpie Antiques & Collectables
6 Commercial Road
Hereford

...only about five minutes walk from the railway station on the main road towards the town centre, and just opposite the bus station. No records, but they do stock a sizeable selection of old metal badges - particularly with a railway theme. They also had some old railway signalling signage.

Was in Swindon on Wednesday and there seems to be a number of shops in the town centre selling records. There was one very large shop (thousands and thousands of items) selling mostly CD's at more or less Charity Shop prices, they did have posters and I think some records. Think it may have some connection to Music Magpie as they did buy as well and there were flyers for Music Magpie..

GOOD NEWS! A new record shop has opened in Oxford at...

FOPP
96~97 Gloucester Green
Oxford

...in the Gloucester Green square close to the main bus station. There used to be a Fopp store in Oxford (almost next door to the new shop), but it closed shortly after the company went into administration back in 2007.

I've always liked Fopp, and still regularly pop into their Covent Garden shop. The range might not be as adventurous as that in most of the independent shops on this thread, but they always have a good back-catalogue of stuff on the shelves, and the prices (especially for CDs) are always low. From a pre-2007 high of 81 stores, they now have nine, two of my favourites of which are:

FOPP
37 Sidney Street
Cambridge

and

FOPP
3~15 Rose Street

When I lived on the Isle Of Wight in the early-90s there used to be at least half-a-dozen worthwhile record shops, thanks mainly to all the second-hand vinyl being passed on or swapped by all the DJs working the island's many nightclubs, holiday camps and hotels. Record Mania in Ryde was a good'un, while there was another truly chaotic set-up in an old basement in the Victoria Arcade on Ryde's Union Street. I remember another decent place at the far end of Newport High Street and an HMV on the same street, but they're now all long gone.

The only independent record shop left on the Isle Of Wight now is...

Sad news...

Jason Gore, the owner of the famous multicoloured 'Lucky Seven' second-hand record shop in Stoke Newington, has put the business up for sale, saying that he won't be able to keep the shop running after the expected rent increase due soon. Stoke Newington is another area of London experiencing a huge increase in expensive/trendy/hipster coffee shops with the resultant rent increases this brings.

I was in Dunbar on the weekend and noticed there was an independant record store in the main St. https://www.facebook.com/...hop/1570919196481735
I don't know if it's any good but if any record hunters are passing on the A1 they could pop in !

I had a sniff in this one on Saturday before Dunbar Utd's game. Vinyl Frontier (excellent name) is a wee shop but with very sensibly priced second-hand vinyl including collectables. I had to control myself...

Plenty of good second-hand vinyl from the excellent late-70s/early-80s era, and I'm pleased to say that all four LPs I bought played in mint condition when I got back home. The shop is in the purple building on the righthand side of the street as you head away from Barnet town centre, sharing premises with a mirror shop. Well worth digging out.

Would recommend the Azuza Cafe and Bar in the same complex, good Coffee and food. In fact Marlborough is a nice town to wander around for a couple of hours. Also has a regular market in the main street. Went through the town today. Used to go there a lot when I was a kid.

Chipping Sodbury also lays claims to the widest high sreet. The High Street in Clifton, Bristol is probably the narrowest - just about enough room to get a car down at one part.

Many thanks to Richiejenn of this parish, who recommended me visit...

The Diskery
99~102 Bromsgrove Street
Birmingham city centre

http://www.thediskery.com

...which is a wonderful old-fashioned second-hand record shop about a ten minute walk south of New Street railway station, just on the corner of Bromsgrove Street and main A38 Bristol Street. Packed from floor to ceiling with vinyl, including old 78rpms, lots of old 45rpm singles (including a lot of Northern Soul), and a huge quantity of jazz, plus much much more. As Richiejenn says, the place oozes nostalgia and is worth a couple of hours of anyone's time.

What with needing to head on to Halesowen Town FC, I had to limit myself to just a pocket-full of CDs and the promise to myself that I'd be popping back again on a more convenient day for a proper explore. TheWavendonian meanwhile had to refuse himself entry outright, knowing that otherwise he'd have been lugging large boxes of records across the terraces of Stourbridge Road before spilling a pint of Pig-On-The-Wall over them and then leaving them on the top-deck of the no.9 bus! But as I said to him, what else in life is there worth spending all your money on?!

Here is a short film to give you a good idea of the place...

Paul's Vinyl Frontier

...in the parade of sixties-built shops just outside Havant railway station.

I recently read an article that said that the opening of an independent record shop is often one of the early signs that a town centre or a high street is turning the corner towards better times. If that is so, then hopefully it is good news for Havant town centre, which has been looking a little run down over the past few years.

Good luck to all involved at Paul's Vinyl Frontier.

I've heard the news that Sainsbury's supermarket, after claiming to be the UK's biggest seller of vinyl records, has set up its own record label: 'Own Label'.

As I'm not really a fan of supermarkets, I'm not too sure how I feel about it at the moment. However, hearing that their first two releases are to be compilation LPs put together by Bob Stanley of St.Etienne, I'm actually really quite keen to get my hands on copies.

Sadly, two record shop closures...

'Bert McCormick CDs & DVDs' of Ballyclare, County Antrim, is closing after forty-two years of trading, as owner Bert is retiring at the age of 78. The shop opened on 1st July 1976.

And 'Head' in the Priors shopping centre in Leamington Spa is closing after over ten years of trading. A sad day for those losing their jobs.

Back in 2009, Graham Jones wrote the book 'Last Shop Standing' (made into a film in 2012) about his work as a record-seller starting in 1986, and the then seemingly terminal decline of independent record shops in the UK. He recorded that in 1986 there were more than 2,200 independent record shops in the country - by 2009, there were only 269.

Now that record shops are opening up again, he has celebrated the fact with a new book: 'The Vinyl Revival And The Shops That Made It Happen', which I bought last week and is obviously a much happier read. As well as writing about the history of record shops, HMV and Record Store Day, he also gives long and interesting write-ups on nearly three hundred independent record shops from all corners of the country.

Here are the six independent record shops he lists in Cornwall...

I was xmas shopping in Edinburgh on Satday so popped in to Vinyl Villains at the top of Leith Walk for a recce. Hundreds upon hundreds of LP's to flick through from all genres. Was tempted to buy but tbh was worried I'd get too carried away and have no money left to buy pressies.

I'm returning to vinyl after 30 years away from it as I'm getting a new record player for my Xmas and will no doubt be frequenting any Edinburgh and Lothians record stores in the new year....

I think there is another one on Leith Walk but tbh it was too bloody cold to go wandering up and down trying to find it !

Plenty of independent record shops to write up about on my recent trip north, starting with the fantastically chaotic...

Also, the excellent Last Heretic micropub is immediately across the road, and the wonderful and famous Coopers Tavern is just around the corner.

Visited before ticking the Spartan South Midland ground of Amersham Town FC was this great record shop...

The Record Shop
37 Hill Avenue
Amersham
Buckinghamshire

...selling a wide mix of new and second-hand vinyl, and run by owner Graeme Campbell. I picked up some second-hand stuff from XTC and Echo and The Bunnymen.

This shop actually has an odd link with the previous record shop I visited last week, Record Collector in Sheffield. Back in November 2015, Public Enemy turned up at Record Collector in Sheffield to perform an in-shop signing before supporting the Prodigy at Sheffield Arena later that night. So much did they enjoy their visit that they forgot the time and almost missed their slot at the gig, having to be rushed there in the back of a customerís Ford Focus and arriving with less than 20mins to spare. When the SKY TV show Urban Myths recreated this story, rather than use the real Record Collector shop on the busy and narrow Fulwood Road, they decorated The Record Shop on the wider and quieter Hill Avenue in Amersham instead as a convenient stand-in.
