Standing/terracing at the 92 league grounds Can't Post or Reply Privately

I'm trying to list all of the grounds in the present league ninety-two that still have terracing/standing areas. So far I can think of:

Championship~
Brentford - Griffin Park

League One~
Scunthorpe United - Glanford Park
Peterborough United - London Road
Bristol Rovers - Memorial Ground
AFC Wimbledon - Kingsmeadow

League Two~
Accrington Stanley - Crown Ground
Exeter City - St.James Park
Wycombe Wanderers - Adams Park
Newport County - Rodney Parade
Cambridge United - Abbey Stadium
Carlisle United - Brunton Park
Cheltenham Town - Whaddon Road
Stevenage - Broadhall Way
Crawley Town - Broadfield Stadium
Morecambe - Globe Arena
Yeovil Town - Huish Park
Forest Green Rovers - The New Lawn
Barnet - The Hive

Have I missed any out?

I think it's 2 years - didn't Scunthorpe have a bit of a run where they kept getting relegated from the Championship in year two so that they didn't need to convert their terracing?

Brentford get an exception because of their plans for a new stadium but presumably Burton will have to convert their terracing to seats if they stay up again this season.

Shrewsbury Town's new safe standing was opened on Tuesday by the Mayor of Shrewsbury.

It consists of 555 rail seats in the Salop Leisure stand, spanning the top five rows across the length of the home end behind the goal.

According to the newspaper I read this in, the rail seating is set to remain for at least three years. I presume this is dependent upon Shrewsbury Town winning promotion to the Championship (they're in the League One play-off final this weekend) - if they win promotion and stay up, I guess they may have to convert back to all-seating in three years time (presuming that FL rulings don't change).

No need to convert back, supporters would just use the seats as normal seats.

Indeed, just lock them in the down position. Although it's not an issue now.

Will fans pay the same amount to stand as they would to sit as presumably the capacity remains the same so the clubs are unlikely to drop their prices?

Locking seats in a down position would be a safety issue. The difference between seating and safe standing are the barriers along each row. Stadiums in the top 2 tiers at the moment are probably more dangerous in their current all seater state with no barriers along each row.

So if you lock a rail seat down it's dangerous? That is how rail seats work. How are they safe then if they are dangerous when they are a seat?

When stadia with these installed play a European game the rail seats are locked into position, if they didn't it would still be a terrace.

Probably a daft question but am I right in thinking that, when you stand up to get out of your seat (say, to let someone past), the seat doesn't flip up but stays in the locked position? If so, must be a bit of a squeeze.

Incidentally, following their promotion, we can now add Macclesfield to the list of EFL clubs with terracing.

Rail seats are not locked in the down position, they are just like any normal seats. This, of course, means that people will still stand even if the match is designated "all seating", just as some do at every match in all-seater stadia. The difference is that the rails make the standing safer.

Other options are in use in Germany, as explained here http://www.fsf.org.uk/...-standing-look-like/

Thanks Mick - how ingeniously simple that is, though looks like the handrails could get in the way of your line of sight when sitting down.

Easily understandable why people want to stand at football matches but, by marshalling people to stand in single file (albeit safely), I wonder if this will really help recapture the atmosphere at stadia that those people feel has been lost. Or if it's such a pale imitation of the 'standing experience' that it just won't catch on.

The idea behind safe standing is each person stands where there is a seat, meaning there is sufficient space between each person to create a safe zone. In the old days of terrace standing you just wedge yourself in, I've been at games where my feet weren't touching the ground (happy memories). With safe standing the barriers along each row stop the surge from behind should anyone fall forward, the barriers should prevent someone falling to the next row pushing that person forward and so on. How stewards control fans making sure that only one person stands in a designated standing space is another matter.

Think I read somewhere that German "safe standing" is on a ratio of 3 standing spectators for every 2 seats. So every spectator still gets their designated area, but there are just slightly more of them.

That would work in England but would probably require lines to be painted so that. (1) each spectator could visibly see their allocated space and (2) it keep H&S bods happy.

The capacity at Borussia Dortmund is ~81k for domestic games where safe standing is in place. For UEFA all-seater matches the capacity is ~65k.

Is there a link to the Shrewsbury demo ?

The seats at Shrewsbury are from Ferco (who also did Celtic Park). The blurb and promotional video on the company's website makes no mention of any locking down in the seating position.

I would expect that locking down to a seating position is a health and safety issue? Harder to evcuate if you are having to shuffle out of the seating sections, rather than just walking.

Won't it depend on the space between the front of the seat and the back of the seat in front. For example the Amex at Brighton has plenty of leg room for a seated fan whereas in some stadia you sit with your knees under your chin. (Slight exaggeration but I am sure you know what I mean).

No exaggeration at some grounds - QPR and Brentford to name 2 local-ish ones where anyone over about 5ft 10 cannot sit down properly. Certainly this is the case in the away sections (plus the Loft End at QPR), assume similar for the remainder of the grounds.

With a restricted view at QPR in many seats for visiting fans which used to be advertised on match tickets but at the same price!

Darlington Arena was horrendous (for many reasons!). 27,000 seats crammed into a ground that would more comfortably hold around 18,000. I went there once, and spent the whole game with my knees seemingly under my chin, and squashed up against the people either side of me.

Not specifically about terracing or standing, but I liked this piece...

https://www.bbc.com/...n-a-stadium/p06bg8xf

...about incorporating crowd atmosphere into modern stadium design (something that the designers of the Kassam Stadium obviously paid no attention to at all Crazy).

I know Everton are very enthusiastic about this sort of thing with the design for their new ground.

Tottenham Hotspur's new ground will be fitted with 7,500 seats that can be converted to safe-standing within an hour...

I'm not sure on what occasions they'll be allowed to use them in the near future (presumably not Premier League matches), but it is good to see that 2,500 of them will be in the section reserved for away fans.

My apologies for including a link to 'The Sun'...

https://www.thesun.co.uk/...sbury-safe-standing/

...but from what I can see (with the exception of the Shropshire Star) they seem to be the only newspaper to have reported online about the use of safe-standing at the Shrewsbury Town v. Bradford City match on Saturday. They have also included several decent photos of the section in use during the match by Shrews' fans.

Not exactly, safe-standing in the way that it's being done at Celtic and Shrewsbury, but a story in today's Oxford Mail...

http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/...ch-at-oxford-united/

...says that a metal rail has been installed infront of the back row of seats the width of the East Stand at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium. They're calling it the Ox-Rail, and if it is successful the plan is to install rails infront of 1,390 seats in the East Stand, and infront of a further 810 seats in the away section of the North Stand.
